I've got Rosie Stewart's Cd of the same name but it doesn't show the lyrics, I'd need to transcribe it - lets see if anyone else has got it first :-) good luck

My own copy of the Rosie Stewart CD (which, by the way, is a lovely bit of work and I can't recommend it too highly) is not immediately to hand and it won't be for about a week. But if no one else has transcribed the words by then I'll do it. I suppose that this CD is the only place to get the words for I think that Rosie learnt the song from her father.

Ah, didn't know the background belfast - I agree it's a wonderful cd & she has a lovely voice!!

I consider myself lucky to have found this cd while on holiday in Ireland a while back, not sure I'd have discovered it in the UK. If I get a chance before Friday I'll transcribe & post here :-)

Ok - I've got most of it transcribed but getting a bit stuck on the place names - I'll have a look at a map tomorrow & see if I can get it sorted. If not I'll post it with loads of question marks & you can help me to fill in the gaps!!!

The place-names and/or words that I can't quite make out are all in brackets and italics. My maps helped me with a couple but I'm really stumped with the rest of them.

Could anyone help with these please?

When I posted the incomplete lyrics above, I PM'd monica to let her know & she replied to me with the following information regarding the missing words. Hopefully we can get these words verified as her 'lough erin' should surely be 'lough Erne' as that's part of the local area. I'd be very interested in more opinions.

I'm glad that "my guru always said" completed this transcription before I started. Better guesses at the place names than I would have made. Having admitted that, I can make a couple of suggestions.

Verse 2, line 3 "sloping hills there created with heather green" should read "sloping hills decorated with heather green".   

Verse 4 is, I think, about Bundoran in County Donegal.

As a matter of small interest, if not trivia, Kiltyclogher (in the 7th and final verse) is the birthplace of Sean MacDiarmada, one of the signatories of the Proclamation in 1916. Before that he used to drive a tram on the Falls Road in Belfast.

Belfast: many thanks! I think 'decorated' is probably right, but I'm still going for 'Doorin' rather than 'Bundoran'. On the Atlantic coast near Garrison there is a bay called 'Doorin' with a stretch of sandy beach (strand), it fits well with the verse content - that's my reasoning anyway :-)

You could well be right. For, with great respect to the good people of Bundoran, the fact that I am not in that fair locality does not give me cause for great lamentation. Maybe Doorin has more to recommend it.
