I have run across this amazing, weird book called "Harmonic Experience", of which I understand about a tenth. But it seems to me to be quite terrific. I understand that he has written a couple of other books -- anybody with any expertise got any comments on this stuff? yours, Peter T.

Peter -- W.A. Mathieu is a Sufi and a jazz pianist of sorts and a composer. He has studied Indian music and jazz. I have a couple of his books: The Listening Book (which has interesting exercises for any musician to do) and The Musical Life, which didn't grab me as much. His books are published by Shambala and he has recordings, too, none of which I have ever heard, not being a fan of either jazz or ragas. I do like the way he writes about music and some of his things to do. He also teaches, but I don't know where.

Peter here's a short bio of W A Mathieu. And here's some exerpts from his book Harmonic Experience, and also from The Musical Life.

"You can lie still in your room and hear room music. There exists, thus, spider music, moss music, cloud and thunderclap music, music of Gaia, and music of the spheres; any or all of these are sensible to saints and sinners. As ye are tuned, so ye shall hear."

Thanks for starting this thread - I can see I'm in for a very interesting study session! I'd love to HEAR his music too - couldn't find any clips online yet.

A thoughtful writer on listening as an art. Quirky and neat ideas about listening with your natural ear.

I thought The Musical Life was a wonderful read - not a book on making music so much as listening for the music in everyday life.
