David Herbert Lawrence (1885 - 1930), novelist, short-story writer, poet and essayist, was born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England, . Though better known as a novelist, Lawrence's first-published works (in 1909) were poems, and his poetry, especially his evocations of the natural world, have since had a significant influence on many poets.

His novels were a continual source of controversy, often involved in widely-publicised censorship cases, most famously for his novel Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928).

Lawrence was a rebellious and profoundly polemical writer with radical views, who regarded sex, the primitive subconscious, and nature as cures to what he considered the evils of modern industrialized society....

This charming wistful poem written by Lawrence in 1928 surely asserts his belief that facing up to life's trials and tribulations with an unblinkered honesty will leave us all the more at peace with ourselves in old age.. He had certainly lived his often troubled life that way.
Alas he was never able to live out his theory fully as he himself was to die at the young age of 44 from a lifelong affliction of tuberculosis...heres the link to the page with this sound poem....

Beautiful old age

Beautiful Old Age
It ought to be lovely to be old
To be full of the peace that comes of experience
And wrinkled, ripe fulfillment.

The wrinkled smile of completeness that follows a life
Lived undaunted and unsoured with accepted lies.

If people lived without accepting lies
They would ripen like apples, and be scented like pippins
In their old age.

Soothing, old people should be, like apples
When one is tired of love
Fragrant like yellowing leaves, and dim with the soft
Stillness and satisfaction of autumn.

And a girl should say:
It must be wonderful to live and grow old.
Look at my mother, how rich and still she is! -

And a young man should think: By Jove
My father has faced all weathers, but it's been a life!

Jim, I'd love to hear this and your other poems, but the first link wanted me to "sign in" which I'd prefer not to do and the second one had no link when I tried to click on "files." What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

kat

Tried, but the bloozman site on Yahoo requires sign-in, which I also refuse to do.
The link to the Lawrence poem also requires sign-in to hear the wav. I never sign-in, usually one gets bombarded with pop-up advs. and stuff.

Its upto you anti sign in rebels out there whether you choose to sign in or not...If you want to listen to dozens of recordings (not just boring soundbites)you'll have to sign in thats Yahoo and Msn's rules theres absolutely no catch...After all if you are a member of Mudcat you had to to sign in there. So what is the problem ?...Nobody is asking for access to your bank acount...your inside leg measurement or your home address and telephone number...you just breeze through the simple registration form and call yourself Mickey mouse if you want to...its as simple as that....No sign..No listen....If your using your home computer you are not anonymous anyway....If the CIA OR MI5 want to find you they can do so i'm afraid without any difficulty, its a myth that pc's can be anonymous so being an ati sign in rebel realy is rather futile,,,

Not worried about personal confidentiality, which is something that no longer exists, it is the spam and pop-ups. I changed my email, refused to sign up with anything except the NY Times, EBay, and a good book seller, and it has been wonderful!

Certain addresses such as geocities are avoided as well. I can always get the information somewhere else. As far as recordings go, most of it is pop ephemera, and there is more free classical, folk, etc. with no sin-in required than I can ever listen to.
