Just been sat here listening to John Kirkpatrick on his album 'Plain Capers', and was wonder what instruments are being played, apart from the obvious.

Are those shawms? Is that a Tabor or a bodhran? Anyone care to hazard a guess, or better, tell us if you know?

Cheers,

stigWeard

What a fantastic album.
Can't help you with the instruments as I've lost my copy.
Actually, does anyone know where I can get a copy on CD?

Rich

According to Laurence Ashton's sleeve notes to the compilation English Originals (TSCD706) Sue also plays piano on Sweet Jenny Jones.

"Plain Capers is a selection of 27 Morris dance tunes from a wide range of Cotswold traditions, using a fair range of traditional instuments. We've resisted the temptation to add 'extra' excitement to the music with electric Folk-Rock arrangement, for the music of the Morris is exciting in itself. We've tried to make Plain Capers a logical progession from previous mileposts in the Morris music revival ,both by re-exploring the roots of the traditional tunes, many never recorded before, and by using traditional instruments as much as possible, played in much the way that the old lads in the Cotswolds would have danced to them with 'plenty of brisk',full of energy, with all the magical marvellous excitement of the Morris."

Album insert notes by JK

This is a really fine album of Morris tunes which falls in line with those recorded by William Kimber,Jinky Wells and the 'Electric Morris' bands of Ashley Hutchings.

What a fantastic album; I never tire of it. After wearing out my cassette, I purchased the CD from Topic's web-site a few years ago.
I find morris tunes particularly inspiring *driving* music; plus the looks you get from fellow motorists at stop lights can't be beat!
