Another Mudcatter kindly found this for me a few weeks ago. I learned the guitar part from Stefan Großmann's notation some years ago. I can't recall who wrote it. Was it Blind Blake?

MISSISSIPPI BLUES

1. Goin' down to the Delta.
Where I can have my fun.
Goin' down to the Delta.
Where I can have my fun.
Where I can drink my white lightnin', gamble. . .
I can bring my baby home.

2. Don't the Delta look lonesome
When that evening sun go down?
[Spoken]: Just 'bout good an' dark.
Don't this Delta look lonesome
When that evenin' sun goes down?
Well, you been lookin' for your baby
Don't know where she could be found.

[Spoken]: Boy, I was lookin' all over town for her,
you know dat?

3. Goin' back to my use-to-be,
Although that she have done me wrong.
Goin' back to my use-to-be,
Although that she have done me wrong.
Well, I think I'll have to forgive her
'Cause I'm tired o' driftin' through this world alone.

[Spoken]: Ain't that a cryin' shame? 'Cause I started
to think about her a whole lot o' times. And she
way down Mississippi, and here I am up here!

4. She treats me dirty,
But I love her just the same.
Well, she treats me dirty,
But I love her just the same.
Well, it just breaks my heart to hear. . .
Lord, some other men call her name.

[Spoken with instrumental]: They better not do that!

5. Now goodbye, I'm gon' leave you,
An' I won't be back no more.

[Spoken]: I ain't gon' be gone that long, you
know—
Now goodbye, I'm gon' leave you,
An' I won't be back no mo'.
Man, my mind gets to ramblin'—
See you in Nineteen and Forty-fo'.

Or are you thinking of:

Way out on the levee
strolling in the pale moonlight
you can hear those steamboats
cross the fields of snowy white
Got a feeling I can't loose...
Muddy water in my shoes...
Now I got those Mississippi delta blues

Which I think is on Eddie Walkers "Red Shoes" album

Yes. Starts out "With friends around and even plas that I know are true......"

It's been covered a lot. Merle does a version of it, among other folks. It's a Jimmie Rodgers tune.

As best I can remember:

With Friends around and even pals you know are true
Still I'm lonesome, homesick and blue
No-one here can help me when I'm all alone
Longing for my Mississippi home

I'm longing for that levee
down by the Mississippi shore
beside those muddy waters I long to be once more
When the night is cloudy and the whipporwhills call
You can hear old mammie shout
"Come on in you all"

Way out on the levee
strolling in the pale moonlight
you can hear those steamboats
'cross the fields of snowy white
Got a feeling I can't loose...
Muddy water in my shoes...
Now I got those Mississippi delta blues

(instrumental break..."Take it away Mr Greenwood!)

Way out on the levee
strolling in the pale moonlight
you can hear those steamboats
'cross the fields of snowy white
Got a feeling I can't loose...
Muddy water in my shoes...
When I get those Mississippi delta blues...
When I get those Mississippi delta blues

(I play it in D but thats just my opinion :) )

Do you suppose that you could help me out with the chords? D is a lovely key.

Repeat verses 2, 3, and 4.

Mississippi Delta Blues -- Leon Redbone

With friends around and new-found pals I know are true,
Still, I'm lonely, homesick and blue.
There's no one who can cheer me when I'm all alone,
Longing for my Mississippi home.

Way down on the delta, on the Mississippi shore,
In that muddy water, I'd love to be, once more.
When those shadows creep about and the whippoorwills call,
You can hear old Mammy shout: "Come in here, you all."

Way down on the leveŽ, strolling in the pale moonlight,
You can see those steamboats in the fields of snowy white,
There's a feeling I can't lose, the muddy water in my shoes,
When I get them Mississippi Delta Blues.
        (YODEL)

The first song can be found on Jimmy Rodgers vinyl album (RCA Victor LPM-1640 33RPM) called "Train Whistle Blues". "Mississippi Delta Blues" is in Volume 2 of the music book "The Legendary Jimmy Rodgers Memorial Folio" and in the back it lists the contents of Volume 1. It was published by Peer International Corporation, in New York in 1967. The folios are still available at music stores.

I really love Tommy Thompson's (Red Clay Rambler's) rendition. I'm not where I can confirm it right now, but I think it was on Merchant's Lunch.
