It was of about 1740, and the tune was by a Mr. Birkhead. I've been able to find nothing out about him, and think he may have been the same as a Mr. Birkenhead that compsoed some tunes about 1720. The 'British Union Catalog of Early Music' lists no compositions by either of them.

Details and facsimile notation can be seen at The Dancing Master, 1651-1728: An Illustrated Compendium By Robert M. Keller. It appeared in quite a few publications subsequently. A similar tune (perhaps the same), Iohn of the Greeney Cheshire Way, appeared in An Extraordinary Collection of Pleasant & Merry Humours, published by Daniel Wright in 1715. (See Early American Secular Music and Its European Sources, 1589-1839: An Index). Whether the stage jig had any relation to the foliate figure of the calendar custom (of whom, according to Roy Judge, The Jack-in-the-Green, Folklore Society, 2nd edition, 2000, there is no record by name prior to 1785, though this was in a formal Masquerade -as Jack of the Green- and presumably the figure was already fairly well-known at that time) I wouldn't like to guess; Judge discusses it but doesn't draw firm conclusions, though he seems inclined to think that the dance wasn't really connected to the custom. There was also a broadside song by the same title, copies of which can be seen at Bodleian Library Broadside Ballads, but this may not be much earlier than the 19th century. Jack of the green Walsh apparently featured "Mr Birkhead of the Theatre Royal" as composer in his collection of 1721. Perhaps Mathew Birkhead, an actor of the period, credited with at least one published song; perhaps someone else. Thomas D'Urfey (Pills to Purge Melancholy, edition of 1719-20, vol.II p.120, prints a song "Sung in my last benefit Play by Mr. Birkhead". There was also a Henry Birkhead (1617-96) who was involved with the theatre. Sir John Birkenhead (1616-1679) wrote some songs, but just the texts, so far as I can tell; they were set by others. There are a few broadside editions of ballads by him at the Bodleian. He probably isn't a candidate for Jack. |
