Subject: Lyr Req: Fingers
From: Ooljana
Date: 04 May 03 - 09:01 AM

Some time ago my friend gave me the tape of the british group
"Fingers".I tried to find 2 songs from it but without any result. There's no tracklist so I don't even know the titles. One of them begins with something like this:

When I was young I........we were wed
I knew no greatest pleasure but to follow where he led
But when he went away to war......be to me
..............across the sea.

The second I can't remember now.
Does anybody know the title or maybe even the whole lyrics?

Can you tell us more about the band? I'm not finding anything. Where, when, who, instruments, style, etc?

Wild Child-

I bet the first one is "When I Was Young" by Peggy Seeger © 1962.

The first verse runs:

When I was young,I loved a lad and gaily we was wed,
I knew no greatest pleasure than to follow where he led,
But when he went away to war, oh sorrow be to me,
For you cannot follow soldiers bearing guns across the sea.

If this is the song you're after, I'd be happy to post the rest of the verses.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Sorcha,
I know only that they are from UK and play celtic music.
On that tape they use guitar, fiddle, cello, bagpipe, banjo, whistles and flute. Two girls sing good.I don't know if they have any more albums.

Ah, Wild Child returns! Note there are several songs by this title; for correct chord placement copy into WORD/TIMES/12:

WHEN I WAS YOUNG-2

(Words and music by Peggy Seeger, © 1962 Stormking Music, in EWAN MACCALL PEGGY SEEGER SONGBOOK, Oak, p. 77)

Cm--------------------Bb-----------------Cm-----------Gm
When I was young, I loved a lad and gaily we was wed,
--Cm-----------------------------------Eb-----------------Gm
I knew no greatest pleasure than to follow where he led,
-----Cm-------------------------------Bb--------------G7
But when he went away to war, oh sorrow be to me,
-----Cm-----------------Bb----------------G7----------------Cm
For you cannot follow soldiers bearing guns across the sea.

They made him leave his wife and child to march in foreign lands,
Can they make him stalk a stranger with a bayonet in his hands?
What kind of men can force a man, who's married, to agree
To take the lives of men with wives in lands across the sea.

I know no field as barren as this life I walk alone,
I know no sorrow greater than to see our growing son,
Will he, too, become a lively man till other men decree
That he lie still as his father does, in a grave across the sea.

Were I the wind I'd bring the clouds to lands that need the rain,
Were I a bird I'd sing of things that comfort men in pain,
Were I a statesman leading men in near or distant lands,
I'd pass a law that only tools of peace be in our hands.

Sorcha- the only reason I beat you to this one is I learned it back in the late 1960's.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Charley Noble,
thank you VERY much.
And maybe you know the second song I'm looking for?It begins with

When the ships ..... to sailing and the men are often gone
What about the women who were often left alone
...........until the men come home
......girl..on her on

Chorus:
.........
.....will be broken with dismay
.........(the same as the first one)
.....and your man has gone away

Sorcha,
writing about the instruments I forgot about piano and bodhran .
