Subject: Lyr Add: VICTORIA DINES ALONE (Tom Paxton) From: bradfordian Date: 05 May 03 - 12:49 PM Don't think it's in the DT (I did search, honest). Maybe it is time it was! VICTORIA DINES ALONE Words and Music by Tom Paxton Victoria dines alone, she skips the potatoes. Victoria begins her meal with greens and tomatoes. Reading the newspaper carefully folded beside her. Hanging her coat by her table and letting it hide her. Victoria dines alone, her dress is old-fashioned. Victoria watches her weight, each meal is rationed. Salisbury steak, and news of the student disorders. Parsnips in butter, and armies patrolling their borders. Victoria's feet are tired she wants to go home. She orders her coffee with cream, and drinks it alone. Victoria dines alone with Hollywood fables. The waiters are counting the time and polishing tables. Victoria's reading of strong astrological forces. Cheesecake and coffee, and columns of Reno divorces. Victoria's feet are tired she wants to go home, She orders her coffee with cream, and drinks it alone. [Repeat first verse] I've had the Alex Campbell LP for eons, & I thouhgt it was time to dig out this evocative chestnut. 'Course, we limeys have to pronounce TOMATOES the wrong way to get to rhyme with Potatoes! (LOL) Brad |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Victoria Dines Alone - Paxton From: Mark Cohen Date: 06 May 03 - 01:09 AM Unless you pronounce potatoes wrong, of course...(well, our Vice President spelled it wrong, so why not?) I learned this song back in 1968 when I recorded a bunch of music from what was then one of Philadelphia's underground music stations, WMMR-FM, and it included Paxton's version of "Victoria". Nice to know my memory still works...that's the way I remember it! Sad to say, I recorded the music at 1 7/8 ips (on a reel-to-reel recorder, of course), in a foolhardy attempt to skimp on tape. The sound quality was, of course, terrible. I'm sure the tape has not survived my many, many moves. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Victoria Dines Alone (Tom Paxton) From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Sep 09 - 10:39 AM Hi, DDPro- the verse arrangement you posted is just a bit different from the Alex Campbell version above. I looked at the posts side-by-side, and the lyrics are the same. What's your source? -Joe Offer, guilty of moving your message to the existing thread- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Victoria Dines Alone (Tom Paxton) From: Newport Boy Date: 30 Sep 09 - 03:58 PM I think the only difference is the addition of the bridge section at the end. Tom's The Honor of Your Company gives the same version as the original post, although you have to analyse the music to confirm this. Phil |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Victoria Dines Alone (Tom Paxton) From: Jason Xion Wang Date: 30 Sep 09 - 07:19 PM Oh, that verse was just in my mind 'cause I didn't know how can this song end up with the first verse... And I thought the Late Mitchell Trio version also ended up with the bridge section. I will find the original Tom Paxton version and check through it. Thank you. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Victoria Dines Alone (Tom Paxton) From: Jason Xion Wang Date: 01 Oct 09 - 09:18 AM This is the version by Tom Paxton. I have to say that I'm wrong. There is no bridge part in the end. |
