That would be like...our backyard, eh?

You should see all the junk that is back there. We got stuff goin' back at least a hunnert years, I think. Piles and piles of it.

It was taken off by the undertakers to where old fridges go when their work is through and they retire.

Rap, are you going to bury the old fridge in the back yard or under the porch with those old freezers?

I was curled up with un coup de rouge and a good, but not important, book.

That wicked Rapparree was SO busy composing sl;andirons allegations he forgot to open his widdle back-flap!

You shure lead a dull flippin' life, Rap! Ha! Ha! Well, somethin' strange happened last night, eh? Somebuddy broke into the grocery store and alls they seem to have took was a lotta canned fruit and a couple other cheap items. I hearn about it at the gas station. That don't make no flippin' sense! Who the flip steals canned fruit??? What for? If you are gonna steal...make it worth yer flippin' while, eh? This is the first time the grocery store in Blind River has ever been robbed, so people are talkin' about it a lot.

Cher Maman, I must be the only one who stayed sober last night. Everyone else seems to have gone to some drunken orgy where they drank the Devil's rum, sang, broke up bars, beat up cops, and caroused with questionable companions.

But not me! I followed your teachings and stayed home, eventually loading the new refrigerator with the food from the old one and then putting on my Winnie-the-Poop jammies and wending my weary way to beddy-bye.

And I didn't wet the bed last night, either!

Yep--mutual deserving in action! Goo'ness, what a crop of malarkey, hein? Ma foi! Lorsque le Rapparee c'est un mecce epouvantable, et le Shane c'est un mecce horrible et degalasse, on va voir un peu de drôle ci-dedans! J'en suis sur!

Are you kiddin'? I can flippin' handle it, man! No word of a lie.   And it sounds easy! I am gonna do just like you said. I just gotta get the canned fruit first. This is gonna be good!

Shame, some libraries sell beer, wine, and liquor.

But here's something to help you out (and yes, it works and it won't kill you).

Get a clean garbage bag. Empty a bunch of cans of fruit in it, the kind in heavy syrup if you can get them (don't add the cans, throw them away). Add a couple packages of dry yeast, like your momma used for baking bread, or add a couple slices of old bread (not moldy). Now pour in a quart of very warm water. Get a straw, like you drink through and a bendy one is best. Twist the top of the garbage bag around the straw and tie it tight. Put the whole thing is a warm place, and bend the straw if you can so so it points down. Let it sit for about two weeks and you'll have some fine drink.

But remember, only a REAL man can take the hangover and I seriously doubt that YOU can deal with any of this.

Dear GUEST,

You sound like Amos, extolling the virtues of obscure books and Apple computers. However, Amos would never read "Love In The Time Of Cholera" -- no, he'd read El amor en los tiempos del cólera. And he wouldn't go on about parametric batteries, but simply state that the flatula overheated, causing a cascade effect in the RM5 array of the P/N junctions that in turn busted it.

Subject: RE: BS: The Mother of all BS threads

Well, there are several theories. One is that the parametric RAM battery died, making the whole system act dead. Apples work great until they don't. The "don't" typically is much less common than in machines running a Microsoft OS.

I am deep into a reread of "Love in the Time of Cholera" by the Old Master Marques. It is draining my desire to do anything else but read the next bit. Fortunately I can get away with it.

SO that's what I am gonna do just now.

Amos... not Apples were they? I thought Apples never lost their

Tropme... yeah... love the lecture. That's why I posted it. As I posted on the Trompe thread...

OP... "I FUCKING love this lecture! This reminds me of many of my professors back in that day when wise wo/men were revered for their knowledge, experience and their ability to impart knowledge at such a grass roots level. Hear hear! Bravo!"

I remember "Smilie" Stevens. He'd walk in and ask, "Any questions?" He'd look around and, if there were no questions, he would smile (looked like a frog when he did)and walk out.

Then there was "Torf" Torffason. First day, he entered the hall by the door stage left of the lectern dressed as a Spanish swordsman (jaunty flat hat with a red feather and all), brandishing an epee. As he thrusted and parried his way to the lectern, he spouted mathematics and physics equations with an English accent in Shakespearean style.

And Chernoff, who, while explaining many mathematical concepts, brought everything back to bah-nah-nahs.

And who could forget Bullet Bob! His chalkboard writing was a work of art and as fast as one could speak. His eyebrows (eyebrow) were so bushy, it seemed he might erase the chalkboard as he moved along.

Then there was... damn... I forget his name! Not a hair out of place. He would be there before we arrived and he would make the chalk fly for the full 50 minutes. Nobody could keep up. The bell would sound and he would announce, "I haven't the time to finish the mathematical derivation of the formula but this is all YOU need to know.", upon which, he would chalk out a simple formula and say, "You kids are lucky."

And Harvey Semple. He'd walk around the drafting lab with a yardstick and pretend he was gonna bat someone in the back of the head with it.

What was the name of the philosophy prof that wore his Toronto Maple Leafs jersey EVERY day? He had a lisp and would always discuss the last game at the beginning of class. When students would comment, he would make them pronounce "Leafs" with a lisp. Great prof. Great guy.

There are more.

I didn't say I bought into it either, and the longer I live the less likely that is. All it seems to have accomplished is to highly annoy a lot of people. May I recommend some good reading? "Why We Lost" by Daniel P. Bolger (LTG, retired).

I'll stick with my clunky old fashioned desk top. Sure, every morning I have to wind that big key in the back after I get the steam up, but I can replace the pop-off valve and the fire grates if I have to.

Ah, yes, the WTC (and Pentagon) were attacked alright, and a lot of people died, but were we told the truth about exactly who attacked it and why, and was an invasion of Afghanistan a sane and responsible way to respond to what was not an attack planned or executed by the government and people of Afghanistan? (It was a criminal act by a clandestine organization or group...it was not an attack by a sovereign nation on another sovereign nation.) And I don't buy for a minute the official version of what supposedly happened or who was actually responsible for it. But I'm not going to argue about that at length here...because it wouldn't change a thing, and I know it.

Amos, I helped my next door neighbor shop for a new computer last week after working on her all-in-one. If it was a regular machine I could have replaced her power supply, but the one-piece device doesn't have as many interchangeable parts. We tried a new hard drive just in case, but that wasn't it. A few years old and it isn't worth the cost of having the repair done by someone else, and if you have to track down scarce parts and mail order them, hoping this is the right piece . . .

There is a *glimmer* of a possibility that I could get to the Getaway this year. It's in the week before my niece's wedding, so I'm looking at the logistics of this. I'd possibly spend a couple of days after in NYC then up to Boston for the wedding.

Indeed, it is a different itch, and nothing quite scratches it like working a good piece of wood or two.

I love the Trompe lecture, Gnuzer. I hope the auld gent isn't addlepated.

Sometimes it gets a bit much. Friday and Saturday were spent working on son's hard disk and buying a new laptop for him after his just keeled over and died mid-scroll. Saturday pm our tenant had to be driven to the Urgent Care clinic to have his knee looked into--he had lambasted it doing a desperate save in a volleyball game, and it was hurting to die for. Turned out nothing torn or broken, just a serious muscle sprain. Then the pharmacy for his pain killers.

Then this morning my own desktop machine just failed in the middle of a process, went black and would not start. dead as a mackerel.

So Tuesday I haul it into the shop in hopes of salvaging at least the hard drive if not the whole machine. Probably blew the mother board or the power supply.
Son goes back to LA with his new laptop as happy as a clam and calls today to say his iPhone has been stolen or lost somehow .

Ain't one goddam thing, it's another.

Or, as they say, life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans.

But I don't WANT to invade "A". Living where he does he'd probably enjoy it too much.

Seriously, there's a world of difference between Pearl Harbor and the Gulf of Tonkin -- and I don't mean geographically. The fact is that the World Trade Center was attacked and a helluva lot of people died. The fact is that at that time the US public would have been willing to support a declaration of war. The fact is that if war had been declared the insurance policies would have been void ("acts of war" and all that voids your insurance policy). It doesn't take someone brighter that Stephen Hawking to figure out what happened next...especially since a son could say, "Looky, Daddy! I got to finish it!! Aren't you proud of me?"

Hi, Mom. I've been remodeling my kiln room. I've doubled the size of it so I can keep my finished pottery, crafter's tent, display shelves and all the other crap that goes to art fairs in it. I was keeping all that stuff in the toolshed, but courtesy of cleaning out my dad's house, I now have so much in the way of tools, fishing tackle and such that I've had to evict the pottery. I was initially going to just buy one of those prefab metal storage buildings, but the kiln room needed a new roof and some other improvements anyway, so I decided to enlarge it instead. It's been fun to do some serious sawing and hammering. I love making pots and playing music, but carpentry scratches an entirely different itch.

Yes, of course, everyone who is attacked will fight back. Obviously.

What if, however, you imagine that you have been attacked by A....because yours news media and leaders told you so....but there actually was no real attack by A. The attack was either completely illusory (never really happened) or was by someone other than A (might be a false flag attack...a deliberate setup by your own government or some "friends" of yours who arranged it).

That has occurred before in history, and it will undoubtedly occur again. It's been done many times. A provocation is needed to get a war going, so one is provided.

What you have happen is that millions of people then unwittingly get taken in, they think their country was attacked by A, and off go the troops to invade A, and it's all just an illusion.

Governments are quite clever at arranging such things.

If I am attacked, I will fight. If I fight, I will not quit until I or my attacker is unable to fight any more. "I" includes those in my family or who are under my care in one way or another, including those who might be attacked in my presence.

Otherwise, I will not harm anyone I don't know and expect the same consideration. I just purely hate to kill or even wound someone to whom I haven't been introduced. It's rude and impolite.

The vital question one always needs to ask oneself, when counseled to go to war is this: "Who, in fact, is my real enemy?"

It may not be any of those unfortunate people way off in some other nation, ordinary people much like yourself, but rather those much closer to home...those in places of power, who are asking YOU to go off somewhere and fight for them, and those sitting just behind them who are profiting by financing the wars and supplying the war materials.

Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made
And crowns for convoy put into his purse:
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is called the feast of Crispian:
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian:'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispin's day.'
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day: then shall our names.
Familiar in his mouth as household words
Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,
Be in their flowing cups freshly remember'd.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Of course, Shakespeare doesn't seem to mention that the English killed the French prisoners because against the "usages of war" the French burned the English supply train.

Pile the bodies high at Austerlitz and Waterloo.
Shovel them under and let me work—
I am the grass; I cover all.

And pile them high at Gettysburg
And pile them high at Ypres and Verdun.
Shovel them under and let me work.
Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor:
            What place is this?
            Where are we now?

            I am the grass.
            Let me work.

And one of my personal favorites

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

"Sometime they'll give a war and nobody will come."
--Carl Sandburg's poem: "The Little Girl Saw Her First Troop Parade"

Bertolt Brecht

Wer den Kampf vermeiden will; denn
Es wird kämpfen für die Sache des Feinds
Wer für seine eigene Sache nicht gekämpft hat.

A glimmer of light from the Far North! Bravo, Sir Booque. Your compassionate lucidity is heartwarming.

The problem of course, comes down to the election of "others", of categorization and blanket identities that make it so easy to elect some individuals as enemy in the game. This is fine for the purposes of playing, but when it becomes obsessive and automated in the mind, great crimes may be justified.

I forget who--a contemporary of Mr Ochs--once said, "What if they gave a war and nobody came?"

Hope blooms eternal in the human breast.

Phil Ochs wrote, "Think of all we've won with a saber and a gun/Was it worth it all?"

Excellent question! But I think that you have to ask others and not yourself. For example, those in Dachau, or the people of Manila back in '45, or those held as POWs by the Japanese, or those recently liberated from ISIS, or those in the American Revolution, or the Korean "Comfort Women", or the women and girls rescued from Boko Haram just a couple days ago, or the freed slaves in the US, or the Irish, or the American Indians who opened a big case of whump-ass on the US Army at places like the Greasy Grass and St. Clair's Defeat and the Big Hole, or Europe back in '44, or any of a number of things.

Unfortunately, unilateral violence seems to go on and on because some people are easily led by others who see violence as the only way to power. Then others must step in to prevent them or in self-defense or to liberate themselves. Unfortunately, others may see this prevention/self-defense/liberation as an opportunity to gain power themselves and so perpetuate the whole, ugly, cycle.

It's snowing again. Oh, it doesn't stick to the pave but some children down the street were making snowpersons yesterday on lawns. I called the RCMP and they put a stop to that shit. Bill C-51 hasn't passed yet so the RCMP have to fill in for the secret police until it passes so that these terrorists don't win. Now, they weren't wearing hijabs, but they were wearing toques so I am sure Crime Minister Harper would want them detained without charges or trial until such time as the CSIS Secret Police has interrogated the little bastards using enhanced techniques.
