I heard on NPR this morning that the Dawn spacecraft is now in orbit around the Dwarf Planet Ceres. After it has completed its mission it will continue to the Oompa Loompa Planet Wonka.

If we were to force feed Little Hawk a truly heroic dose of magic mushrooms, would it:

A) Make his imaginary friends go away
B) Make his imaginary friends even more obnoxious
C) Make his current crop of imaginary friends go away, only to replace them with others who are even worse

Hell, you don't need no Legion to handle that flea-bitten furbag. Just slip a note with his current residence on it--if you can find it--to the Madame down at Albuqerque's Finest House of Nefarious Delights and watch the smoke! Ole Chinga'll be on his trail faster than a drunk Apache.

Ya know, Chong', there're a lot of folks in the Windy City who LOVE to eat bushmeat. I'm just sayin'....

That's what happens when a buncha damned inbred Idaho rednecks get together and try to pretend they have a good reason for existin'. It's like givin' matches to 4 year-olds. Things go wrong. If this here Idaho Legion actually does exist and has a place where they meet, then it should be declared a Federal Disaster Area...and it will be after I am elected. I'll send in the troops, helicopters, flamethrower squads, and bulldozers and clean it up but good. You won't see nothin' left after they are done, and the whole state will heave a big sigh of relief.

If, on the other hand, Rap's stories are just a big buncha hooey and there ain't no Idaho Legion, then we'll just put him where he can't hurt nobody...maybe a little "safe house" up in Alaska...and let Sarah Palin deal with it. She owes me anyway. She gave amnesty to a turkey one time, right? So she should be able to handle keepin' Rap out of trouble.

Well, the Legion has a big hydraulic press set up in the garage. It's really slow but at with crushing potential of better than 1,750 tons it makes things pretty flat.

Then there's The Room That Dares Not Speak Its Name, where only people in skimpy leather outfits hang out -- it's soundproof and they bring out a lot biohazard trash bags to burn in the Legion's big incinerator.

And of course there's the Legion Zoo and the midnight boat trips....

That's rather onerous but, if the monkey dies, so be it. Hopefully it will be quick and painless with the emphasis on quick.

HA! HA! HA! OOK! OOK! (gasp)

Jeez, I am fallin' off my damn chair here, Rap! That was pretty good. What I am thinkin' is, you missed yer proper callin' in life. You should not've been a librarian, you shoulda been a damn comedian! That was hilarious!!!!

I am gonna print out a copy of it and hang it on the wall here. Maybe take a copy over to Duffy's too, and show the guys.

The jury has made no recommendation of mercy. Therefore, you are remanded to the custody of the sheriff for incarceration and, on the first day of April next, you will be taken from said place of incarceration to the place of execution, there to be executed by any lawful means the sheriff sees fit. This may include, but is not limited to, breaking on the wheel, stoning, decapitation, hanging by the neck until you are dead, being shot to death by musketry, drawing and quartering, peine forte et dure, garrotting, poisonous gas, or any other method. The only forbidden method is old age. And I will admonish you that the only reason you are getting off so lightly is because the Statutes of the Idaho Legion prevent me from giving you such punishment as that which you so very richly deserve.

This was signed today by the Colonel General, the Judge Advocate General, and the majority of the members in good standing of the Idaho Legion.

By the other way, you may think my use of "soul" in my last post instead of "sole" is a mistake. It is not. It is a calculated error. If I were too perfect, I would be a prime candidate for permanent abduction by aliens who would exhibit me in a zoo on their home planet. If that were to occur, I would no longer be able to participate in the MOAB because, while the aliens have really cool warp-drive spaceships, they still don't have 4G wireless.

Y'know, I don't believe all them big stories Rap tells about the Idaho Legion. Sounds like a load of crap to me. Rap is just tryin' to generate a little excitement in a life where...let's face it...there ain't a whole lot goin' on. That will change when Lucifer gets there.

They attempted to take the Colonel General of the Idaho Legion. They beamed her up and tried to insert some of those probe things they use. That was a mistake, and now there is UFO wreckage all of sides of South Putnam mountain. The Colonel General, you'll be pleased to know, survived the Fate Worse Than Death intact (so to speak).

No, I don't have a Kelvin thermometer. But I have things that look sort of like those devices on that Amazon page. The aliens give me one each time they beam me up from the Krispy Kreme parking lot. I guess they don't have an autoclave to sterilize their probes, so they just give them away as souvenirs.

When it gets below 50F, I convert the temperature to Kelvin. 271K just sounds much warmer than 29F, and even warmer yet than -2C. It also confuses hell out of most folks since only scientists and such use the Kelvin scale. Tell the average Joe it's 275 on a nice spring day and he'll think you're what our UK friends would call barmy.

Expect Lucifer to show up sometime not long after April 20 and stay for a couple of weeks. Be sure to stock up on fresh fruit, whisky, and lots of cigarettes...preferably Camels. If Lucifer gets time, he'll stop off in San Diego and see Amos too. Chongo wants him to deliver a package there. I guess it's a present or something. It makes a ticking sound. My wife had a droopy eyelid fixed a few years ago -- it was interfering with her vision. She wasn't out of circulation at all during recovery. So I think Amos is have Something Else done, perhaps involving estrogen AND surgery. You know those SoCal people.

I am concerned about the hernia surgery. After all, they're cutting into my very own body! But I'm used to it by now because this will be the fourth time in 12 months I've had some kind of surgery. I just wonder what kind of physical therapy they're going to have me do. Oh, it is "keyhole" surgery.

Amos's eyelids, they did droop
And make him look a tired old poop
So to the surgeon he did go
The aging process for to slow

But in their haste to work their art
The docs mixed up old Amos' chart
With that of an exotic dancer
Who'd paid the surgeons to enhance her
Normal looking female chest
With super huge humongous breasts

So to the surgery they were trucked
The dancer's eyes were nipped and tucked
And Amos got from his fine doctors
A pair of most enormous knockers

Now Amos he no longer goes
To titty bars or burlesque shows
He stays at home and laughs and giggles
As the right one bounces and the left one jiggles

It has been a dull weary sort of day. For one thing, tt has rained all the livelong day except for intermittent bursts of bright blue skies and sunlight. The creeks are running high and the gutters are gurgling. FOr another I had little sleep in the night and have been compelled to compensate by being half-asleep for a third of the day (which adds up to one-sixth of a sleep.) All I have managed to do is study subatomic physics and build a database of literary sites and walk the dog a couple of times when the rain let up. I am exhausted.

I hope you are feeling all right, Rapparree. Your hernial interventions worry me some. I am going under the knife Wednesday and will be out of circulation for a couple of weeks. But not for sa hernia. For droopy eyelids! Can you believe that! Ten days from now I will be moaning "What have I DONE?". But three weeks from now I shall be grinning a hard-edged grin, I am sure.

I had a llama sort of like that once. He had acute fear of heights, which would be a debilitating condition if he lived in his native Peruvian Andes, but he lived in Florida where there are no heights, so he never even knew he had a problem. He also abhorred the sound of Andean panpipes. A few notes would send him into fits of uncontrollable spitting. In fact, he hated anything having to do with Peru. Wouldn't eat lima beans. Tried to kick the door out of his llama trailer while we were driving through Peru, Indiana. I think that, deep down in his soul, he wasn't really a llama at all. Maybe a goldfish. Or an alligator.

Did I ever mention ol' Rex, our dog? He could do tricks. You'd tell him "Lay down -- STAY" and he'd stay that way until you put his food out. He had ailurophobia, agoraphobia, ergophobia, claustrophobia, atychiphobia, ablutophobia, gnosiophobia, tropophobia, and he didn't like very many people -- none, in fact.

We had a dog like that once. Rex (that was the dog's name) never made noise and never had to go "out". Rex protected the house and all of our possessions and us, too. Once, I remember, some bullies had chased us home from school and ol' Rex gave us protection and comfort when he hid with us under the bed. Then there was the time at the old swimming hole when my little brother went swimming immediately after eating a big plate of baked beans; he got his foot caught under an underwater log and would have drowned except for Rex, who napping in the house five or six miles away so I rescued my brother and gave the credit to Rex, who needed it.

As he got older, Rex got bigger and bigger. You would too if you never went "out". One day the city required that all dogs get a rabies immunization. Mom loaded old Rex onto the neighbor's flatbed truck and took him to the vet. The vet stuck the needle in and Rex exploded. Poor old Rex! The small town never has recovered from that disaster. Half the downtown -- six buildings, one two stories tall -- was destroyed. The town's entire street cleaning department immediately resigned; he said he didn't take the job to clean things up.

For months the residue lay around, and the hot summer sun didn't help matters. Finally the State environmental people declared a disaster area Superfund Site and the entire fiasco was loading into plastic bags, buried, and left for the future to deal with.

Dog beds washed today, resulting in enough dog hair in the dryer lint trap to knit another dog. Maybe MOM could do that, and then she'd have a quiet dog around the house that doesn't eat much and never needs to go out.

True story time...

All trucks and trailers traveling on Interstate 10 in Florida are required to stop for agricultural inspection at an inspection station between Tallahassee and Jacksonville. A friend of mine pulled into said inspection station while hauling his horse trailer and happened to be in line behind a truck carrying animals belonging to a petting zoo. When the menagerie truck got to the inspection point, the driver handed the inspection agent his manifest and opened the rear door so the agent could verify that the stated animals were on board. The agent checked the manifest against the animals and came up short one llama. The agent asked about this and the driver explained that the llama was an irritable traveler and it would be best if the agent just took the driver's word for it that there was a llama behind the closed door. The agent said that wouldn't do, that the driver would have to let him see the llama. So, the driver opened the door and the llama promptly spat a huge gob of masticated llama feed into the agent's face. The driver then closed the door, said "I told you so," and handed the inspection agent a bandana.

When it became my friend's turn to be inspected, he told the still dripping agent he had "Four horses. No llamas."

From the cradle to the grave our lives are sweet
But, seeming long, are but the distance of a bleat.
How slight would seem the woes of life's hard hammer,
If our One God turned out to be a llama.
But we could pray Him still to ease this shit,
Or grant (at least) the measure of a spit.

Hi, Mom! This is post #51869. I hereby proclaim the distance remaining to post #52000 (131 posts) to be "within shouting distance". At some further point, the distance remaining to post #52000 will be "within spitting distance". I'll let you know when we get there. You can rest assured that the determination of said "spitting distance" shall be made in an entirely random fashion, leaving no room for concern with the vagaries of logic, common sense, parliamentary procedure, or the indecipherable manner in which a game of ten-pins is scored. I may or may not be wearing a cap when that point is reached.

When we were still a couple I was the one who most often wore hats.

My den is a step down from the kitchen and the house builders put in a metal rail along the top of that long step, leaving a gap to walk through. There is a knob on each side of that metal rail gap, and I hang my yard ballcaps there. A couple of them are the clean ones to wear when going out in public (like over to Home Depot to buy more top soil or lumber) and then there are the grungy ones for dog walks and working in the garden. My hall closet houses some fine straw hats with broad brims from my days of working in desert regions, and I have a fine woven palm Panama hat for yard work. There are a couple of old straw cowboy hats from when the kids were little, and I have a whole bunch of knitted and crocheted headgear for very cold weather. And my hats that I can't get rid of but that I also don't wear are several vintage Stetsons worn during my many years as a park ranger. Every so often I pull one out just to prove I really was a ranger. Who else would buy a "Smoky the Bear" hat?

My collection of peaked caps was closing in on 500 when "the incident" took place while I was away working construction in Labrador paying the bills. It wasn't the final straw that broke the gnu's back but perhaps it should have been. Who knows? All I know is, I am still out nearly 500 hats and some of them were worth $$$. Hey! A Cat Diesel Power hat? You know what kinda pool I had to shoot in a seedy bar in Labrador to win that hat? But, then again, I don't have to put up with "her" anymore so it's cool.

She took my cat too. My only solace is that my cat never liked her. I actually cried over the cat. Her? Not so much.

And two straws for working in the yard, wearing in summer, and fishing. And a Tilley-style hat I bought for the cruise last July. That's about it. No fedoras, no homburgs, no bowlers, no sombreros, no military patrol caps, no top hats, no stovepipes, no derbies, no beanies, no porkpies, no panamas, no skimmers, no berets, no tyroleans, no helmets, no helms.
