I don't know. I don't understand suicide for ideology or religion or because you don't believe like I do. Likewise I don't understand murder for the same reasons. If you attack me or mine, yes, I will do my utmost to stop you from doing it. But other than to literally terrorize people, WHY? Revolution is one thing, murdering innocents and suicide quite another. But greed -- for money or power or both -- drive some and they condemn others, and there must be a very, very special place in Hell for them. Very special indeed...Dante's would be looked upon as Heaven.

I go and it is done: the cab invites me. Hear it not, sleeping neighbors, for it is a knell that summons me to Salt Lake City Airport and the Chicago Midway hell.

Running off in a big yellow taxi, eh? Ducking the metaphysical quandary that entangles Mom and all her ilk? Don't you feel spatulate?

A big yellow taxi came and took away Rap? Where was Joni?

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, this AM, I weighed 169.8#. I have gorged on fattening foods today. We'll see.

Pizza, steak and mushroom sandwich with lots of margarine and pepper on whole wheat, and a bottle of Carlo Rossi Fruity White wine over several hours. 171# this AM. Better.

Getting kinda chilly these days... some flurries expected this eve.

Attention getting devices such as suicide bombs and murder will be the end of ISIS eventually. They have offended some very large parties of the first part.

Enjoy riding in your Big Yellow Cab, Rap. Then come home and write a children's book about your adventure. Ala Daniel Pinkwater.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

(You listening there, Gnuzer?)

Dylan Thomas

Dylan Thomas's poem is a good one, a classic, but it doesn't in any way match my own thoughts on the matter. I think it is perfectly natural to go gently into "that good night" (death), and with much calm acceptance and rejoicing, because death is not the dying of the light, it is the opening into a far greater light, it is liberation from all the limitations of the physical body and the physical world, it is rebirth, it is a wondrous new beginning for the soul! In fact, there could be no more perfect exit from this earthly stage...short of turning into pure light, which is said to have happened in a very few cases of highly enlightened beings.

I consider it absolutely foolish and vain to rage against death or to regard it as an "enemy" to be fought against. Rather, embrace it with peace, with honor for its gifts, and with fearlessness when the time comes, if at all possible. It amounts to nothing more than another dramatic "exit stage left" when the Earthly play is done! And after that? Start planning for the next delicious role in the next marvelous Earthly play......or sojourn for awhile in the astral regions, if that be your preference.

Depends. Right now, I got shit to do and it ain't gonna happen if things don't work out. Philosophical shit don't matter squat when there is a knock on the door and you still go shit to do. Rage or submit? There is no choice when the bell tolls. Ya just roll with it. It's neither... it's life.

Life is, by far, the leading cause of death.

Death is change. Change is inevitable. And it's also what keeps life interesting...and challenging. But if you have "shit to do", as you say, then you definitely have good reason to want to be here awhile yet so you can get it done.

After various deaths (mostly irate fathers and brothers) I have returned to the town where I was born and where I grew in wisdom, age, and grace until it was time to spread my wings and soar high. It was here on the Mississippi, in the country where Sam Clemens also grew up, where Lincoln and Douglas met in debate, where charity and compassion caused my ancestors to give a helping hand that saved the entire LDS Church from destruction, where the first Black priest in North America grew and was ordained after escaping from slavery, that I was born and raised. Yes, I have spent a few days here amidst my ancestors and relatives and now I shall retrace my steps to give thanks for my many blessings with my faux family, and then back to my little sod shanty in the Rockies.

IT was long ago, too (2005, to be exact) on a late November day, that the inimitable Source of All Soi-Disant Wisdom for the Children of MOAB posted this stern warning:

"The world is running out of numbers. IP addresses are already scarcer than hen's teeth, ISBNs are getting that way, and Who Know What Will Be Next. Well, I do and I'm gonna let you in on it because Mother's children can and must survive the Number Crunch. And I'm doing this for free, because I'm a good-hearted sort of guy, but who wouldn't turn down a gift or a percentage of the take, either.

But what isn't widely known -- YET -- is that we are running out of ALL numbers. Think about it. Mathematicians have known for centuries that this day would come; why do you think that they call them "finite numbers?" And because of the current crowd in governments world-wide we are quickly running out of rational numbers, too! Integers, once the mainstay of arithmetic and accounting, are now replaced by...by...imaginary numbers!

These trends will culminate in your lifetime and mine (well, definitely mine, since I plan to live forever). Highly sophisticated regression analysis, applying the esoteric concepts embodied in Fermat's Second-To-Last Theorem and the crystalline arrays of Laplace Transformations, demonstrate beyond the shadow of a doubt that the world will run completely out of number no later than 2:37 p.m., April 14, 2007.

NOTE THE DATE! Americans will not be able to pay their income taxes!

But I offer to you, fellow MOABites, a chance to stockpile (i.e., hoard) numbers for the coming Number Crunch. There is a number mine here, and you can follow the links (or "veins", as numberologists call them) to more numbers. Most importantly, it doesn't matter if the numbers are pre-owned or even obsolete! Buff out the scratches and you can sell them as new! Accountants, tax attorneys, and even ordinary citizens will praise you while at the same time shelling out Big Buck$ for the numbers YOU had the foresight to stockpile. Your children and grandchildren will thank you, not to mention that they will be able to do their math homework and even paginate their term papers!

Thus, 't was ever thus--an opportunistic rumor-monger of the First Water! An afficianado of braggadocio and hyperbole, A first-order fan of foofaraw and fervent furbelows, a lover of linguistic malconformations and misty muzziness designed to bother, bewilder, bewitch and balognify, a misled master of misrepresentation and maudlin magic mysticism, a conniving confidence cad and a scurrilous scoundrel spraying semantic shrapnel on innocent lawns.

Long have we suffered, and, lo, no end is there in view. But have faith, children of Mom! The day will come when a single trumpet-like statement--clear, concise, and demonstrably truthful--will flow from the bedraggled and abused keyboard of this miserable malcontent. Then shall the halls of Mom ring with rejoicing, the paeans of praise as the meandering misanthrope sees the Light! Calllooo! Calllay!

Which brings up yet another point: doughnuts and other toridal shapes are also endangered. Far too many have been used for tires (tyres in unenlightened points of the multiverse), bent into pretzels, and otherwise bent for the amusement of humanity! From the humble Mobius strip to the quasi-elegant Klein surface, the torus has been twisted and tortured 'til it has been terribly transfigured! Soon, this symbol of All Things Good And Pure will be, like the Equatorial Puffin, critically endangered!! And should it become extinct humanity would be forced to limp along on Bismarks, crullers, and other parallelogrammatic parameters until they, in their turn, become extinct. But there is HOPE! The lowly trapezoid has volunteered to save Humanity from the desolation of deficient geometry. The trapezoid, unsung and unheralded, has long supported Humanities over-arching achievements! That is why December has been named by International Society of Geometers And Geometres And -trixes (yes, the ISOGAGA-t) as "Interspatial Trapezoid Appreciation Month." Make it your personal mission of spread the Good News About Trapezoids to the world and, if you can, take one to lunch.

I am currently in Indiana, home of L'il Orphant Annie, Moonlight on the Wabash, and The Olde Oaken Bucket. Pray for me.

In yer case, Rap, prayer will not be enough. What is needed to straighten you out and get you flyin' right is a full blown miracle of the sort that ain't often seen in this Universe, let alone this small world here. God himself...or his holy son, Kong, would hafta step down from the rafters, so to speak, and rip apart the entire time-space continuum to even make a start at putting you right! I fear what collateral damage could be done to make that happen. No, I figger it is probably best if you are just left alone in yer present state of idiocy like a bent bicycle wheel...a thing that can't be fixed. Future generations will look back and say, "There will never be another Rapparee", cross themselves, and hope they are right about that!

Back home again in Indiana,
And it seems that I can see
The gleaming candle light, still shining bright,
Through the Sycamores for me.
The new-mowed hay sends all its fragrance
From the fields I used to roam.
When I dream about the moonlight on the Wabash
Then I long for my Indiana home.

'Round my Indiana homesteads wave the cornfields,
In the distance loom the woodlands clear and cool.
Oftentimes my thoughts revert to scenes of childhood,
Where I first received my lessons, nature's school.
But one thing there is missing in the picture,
Without her face it seems so incomplete.
I long to see my mother in the doorway,
As she stood there years ago, her boy to greet.

[CHORUS]

Oh, the moonlight's fair tonight along the Wabash,
From the fields there comes the breath of newmown hay.
Through the sycamores the candle lights are gleaming,
On the banks of the Wabash, far away.

Many years have passed since I strolled by the river,
Arm in arm, with sweetheart Mary by my side,
It was there I tried to tell her that I loved her,
It was there I begged of her to be my bride.
Long years have passed since I strolled thro' the churchyard.
She's sleeping there, my angel, Mary dear,
I loved her, but she thought I didn't mean it,
Still I'd give my future were she only here.

CHORUS

And, of course, that State Song of My Childhood (albeit the State is now issuing vouchers in place of Lottery winnings):

By thy rivers gently flowing, Illinois, Illinois,
O'er the prairies verdant growing, Illinois, Illinois,
Comes an echo on the breeze.
Rustling through the leafy trees, and its mellow tones are these, Illinois, Illinois,
And its mellow tones are these, Illinois.

Eighteen-eighteen saw your founding, Illinois, Illinois,
And your progress is unbounding, Illinois, Illinois,
    Pioneers once cleared the lands,
Where great industries now stand. World renown you do command, Illinois, Illinois,
World renown you do command, Illinois.

From a wilderness of prairies, Illinois, Illinois,
Straight thy way and never varies, Illinois, Illinois,
    Till upon the inland sea,
Stands thy great commercial tree, turning all the world to thee, Illinois, Illinois,
Turning all the world to thee, Illinois.

When you heard your country calling, Illinois, Illinois,
Where the shot and shell were falling, Illinois, Illinois,
    When the Southern host withdrew,
Pitting Gray against the Blue, there were none more brave than you, Illinois, Illinois,
There were none more brave than you, Illinois.

Not without thy wondrous story, Illinois, Illinois,
Can be writ the nation's glory, Illinois, Illinois,
On the record of thy years,
Abraham Lincoln's name appears, Grant and Logan, and our tears, Illinois, Illinois,
Grant and Logan, and our tears, Illinois.

Let us pledge in final chorus, Illinois, Illinois
That in struggles still before us, Illinois, Illinois
To our heroes we'll be true,
As their vision we pursue. In abiding love for you, Illinois, Illinois.
In abiding love for you, Illinois.

But they are, Winny. It's a matter of choice. I know many who drink Coca-Cola, Red Bull, and other caffeinated beverages. The Church has said, 'The Church revelation spelling out health practices (Doctrine and Covenants 89) does not mention the use of caffeine.

'The Church's health guidelines prohibits alcoholic drinks, smoking or chewing of tobacco, and 'hot drinks' — taught by Church leaders to refer specifically to tea and coffee.'

Oh -- sacramental wine is excluded from the prohibition on alcoholic beverages.

There is no prohibition against owning coffee shops or a distillery and you'll find both in Salt Lake City. There was a brewery in Nauvoo. "Valley Tan" was distilled in SLC and sold to "gentiles" across the Rockies. Just tithe.
