Duckboy in Nanoland, a video game at the Science Museum in London with an online counterpart at www.sciencemuseum.org.uk, has made a splash among physicists and philistines alike. The online game recorded 1,500 players within its first three weeks, and the video game in the museum's gallery chalked up even more, according to Natasha Waterson, a content developer at the museum.

"How different the world feels, looks and behaves at the nanoscale is a difficult concept that we thought would be best conveyed in an interactive," Waterson explained in an e-mail message. "Of course, Duckboy in Nanoland is essentially a story about how quantum and classical physics affect the nanoscale world. But to say that could put people off instantly!"

You don't need to figure that hard! Where is everyone, anyway? Just because it's a nice weekend day. . . oh, wait. . . I was gonna go outside for a while. . . back later. . .

If Duckboy makes it through Nanoland, Gluon will have an old-time family get-together. Quark, quark, quark!!

What fun it'll be!

Mom, you're looking a little down this morning!

Don't worry about all of that Nanoland stuff if you don't want to do it. It's hot out. Want a nice glass of ice tea? You can sit here on the porch swing (Whoops! Duck when Gluon races past!) and watch Amos and Rapaire play in the yard.

NANO, NANO!

By the way, has anyone seen what you people would regard as a small animal that resembles a cross between a duck and a dog? If you do, tell it that the rebel forces have been defeated and that it's safe for him to return to Sector Seven and claim the Imperial Throne.

Mater, je me retournee.

Yes, I have returned from Salt Lake City, where my wife and I wandered yesterday. She picked up her new used Pfaff 7550, and this ack emma flew off to a seminar in Lincoln. From thence she and her friend Mary will wend their way to Columbus, Ohio and the annual NQA Quilt Show. (Not all fun, though; she will also be taking a couple days of Continuing Legal Education stuff while there.)

And I...I will be laboring in the vineyard, hewing wood and drawing water, keeping the home fires burning, my nose to the grindstone, my eyes on the road, my hands to myself, my nose clean, my thoughts pure, my pants on, and my shoulder to the wheel.

And Mom? Here's a web site that my niece (the art major) created about our family reunion. She the same one who's carving my rifle stock, Mom. Unfortunately, she didn't have many accurate pictures of her family.

Anyway, Mom, I'm back from my brief sojourn to God's Country.

Go to Google's translation utility, http://translate.google.com/translate_t.

Translate "my mom is nice and cool" from English to Spanish. Then copy what you get and translate it back to English.

It only works with Google, not Babelfish.

Only if you have overdue stuff.

And I've gotten a haircut.

(If you look at the "Contact" page you'll find a picture of Ted. Ted is 10 -- and that's a real, steel, and very sharp cutlass he's holding. The picture above him is of Lauretta, the website author. She has looked like that since being infected with chloroplast, but on the other hand she now photosynthesizes her own food and replaces CO2 with O2. I should mention that Ted is also a vampire.)

Sounds like there is a steep attrition rate in library use in Idaho. But maybe you do your keelhauling in that pretty lake over by McCall? Under water might be the preferable condition there--unless mosquitoes can swim and bite underwater.

"Was it a dream?"

"Must have been. There was Gluon, running around with some pages in her mouth, and when I called her and she sat quietly I could see it was calendar pages of all of 2005 up through June. How odd is that?"

"And you say that last night you experienced a fugue, in which you were suddenly back on December 20, 2004?"

"Sure felt like it. As soon as that calendar went down the ol' duck/dog hatch. Anyway, more to the point, doc, you're the vet, you need to see what's wrong with this duck/dog. Gluon seems to have eaten the time/space continuum with those pages, and . . . wait. . .something's happening. . .
eeew, Gluon, that stinks! . . . "

A pile appears on the ground, and embedded are the six pages of calendar, intact but for a few bite marks in one corner. The animal rights herself, scratches the ground, then runs in a mad circle.

"Hmmmmm. I wonder? . . . Amos! Rapaire! Come get this animal of yours!"

I found this on a floppy on my keyboard. It was chewed and covered with slobber, but I managed to recover the data:

Gluon's Song
by Gluon

Folks are dumb where I come from,
They ain't had any learning.
Still they're happy as can be
Doin' what comes MOABlly (doin' what comes MOABlly).

Folks like us could never fuss
With schools and books and learning.
Still we've gone from Ack to Zed,
And never fillin' up our head! (Never fillin' up our head).

You don't have to know how to read or write
When you're out with a freds in the pale moonlight.
You don't have to look in a book to find
What itshehe would like for an orgy time.
That comes MOABlly (that comes MOABlly).

Stilly out in Texas can't even write her name.
She signs her checks with "x's"
But they cash them just the same.

If you saw my pa and ma,
You'd know they had no learning,
Still they've raised a puck like me
Doin' what comes MOABlly (doin' what comes MOABlly).

Cousin Rap has never read an almanac on drinking
Still he's always on the spree
Drinkin' stuff quite MOABlly (drinkin' stuff quite MOABlly).

Amos out in San Dieg' has never had a lesson,
Still he's learned to sing off-key
Doin' what comes MOABlly (doin' what comes MOABlly).

You don't have be a learned duck
Not to pick up a paper near a scoured puck.
You don't have to have the capitol's dome
To break down the trees when Bee-Dub's not home.
That comes MOABlly (that comes MOABlly.

Poor old Bunn is on the run
With someone he just married.
There he is at ninety-three,
Doin' what comes MOABlly (doin' what comes MOABlly.

What? No "plinka, plinka, plinka"? My banjo goes "plinka, plinka, plinka"! In fact, there's a little guy that lives inside my head, and after I've been playing the banjo for about an hour he opens a little door, comes out and says, "Beezer! Whutchyu goin' 'plinka, plinka, plinka' fo'? Dontchyu got nothin' bettah t' do?" Then another little door opens and this much bigger little guy steps out and says, "'Cause I CAN, fuckface! Now hit the road!" And the little guy goes, "PFFFFFTTTTTTH!!!" and slams the door shut.

Must have got the wrong address. There were flapadoodles, and flapedoodles, and flipdoodles and all sorts on the one I meant.

I'm and idjit, or maybe a flapdoodle....

To make amends

"The Song of the Banjo"
Kipling 1894

You couldn't pack a Broadwood half a mile--
You musn't leave a fiddle in the damp--
You couldn't raft an organ up the Nile,
And play it in an Equatorial swamp.
I travel with the cooking-pots and pails--
I'm sandwiched 'tween the coffee and the pork--
And when the dusty column checks and tails,
You should hear me spur the rearguard to a walk!

With my "Pilly-willy-winky-winky-popp!"
[Oh, it's any tune that comes into my head!]
So I keep 'em moving forward till they drop;
So I play 'em up to water and to bed.

In the silence of the camp before the fight,
When it's good to make your will and say your prayer,
You can hear my strumpty-tumpty overnight,
Explaining ten to one was always fair.
I'm the Prophet of the Utterly Absurd,
Of the Patently Impossible and Vain--
And when the Thing that Couldn't has occurred,
Give me time to change my leg and go again.

With my "Tumpa-tumpa-tumpa-tumpa-tump!"
In the desert where the dung-fed camp-smoke curled.
There was never voice before us till I led our lonely chorus,
I--the war-drum of the White Man round the world!

By the bitter road the Younger Son must tread,
Ere he win to hearth and saddle of his own,--
'Mid the riot of the shearers at the shed,
In the silence of the herder's hut alone--
In the twilight, on a bucket upside down,
Hear me babble what the weakest won't confess--
I am Memory and Torment--I am Town!
I am all that ever went with evening dress!

With my "Tunka-tunka-tunka-tunka-tunk!"
[So the lights--the London Lights--grown near and plain!]
So I rowel 'em afresh towards the Devil and the Flesh,
Till I bring my broken rankers home again.

In desire of many marvels over sea,
Where the new-raised tropic city sweats and roars,
I have sailed with Young Ulysses from the quay
Till the anchor rumbled down on stranger shores.
He is blooded to the open and the sky,
He is taken in a snare that shall not fail,
He shall hear me singing strongly, till he die,
Like the shouting of a backstay in a gale.

With my "Hya! Heeya! Heeya! Hullah! Haul!"
[Oh, the green that thunders aft along the deck!]
Are you sick o' towns and men? You must sign and sail again,
For it's "Johnny Bowlegs, pack your kit and trek!"

Through the gorge that gives the stars at noon-day-clear--
Up the pass that packs the scud beneath our wheel--
Round the bluff that sinks her thousand fathom sheer--
Down the valley with our guttering brakes asqueal:
Where the trestle groans and quivers in the snow,
Where the many-shedded levels loop and twine,
Hear me lead my reckless children from below
Till we sing the Song of Roland to the pine!

With my "Tinka-tinka-tinka-tinka-tink!"
[Oh, the axe has cleared the mountain, croup and crest!]
And we ride the iron stallions down to drink,
Through the canyons to the waters of the West!

And the tunes that mean so much to you alone--
Common tunes that make you choke and blow your nose--
Vulgar tunes that bring the laugh that brings the groan--
I can rip your very heartstrings out with those;
With the feasting, and the folly, and the fun--
And the lying, and the lusting, and the drink,
And the merry play that drops you, when you're done,
To the thoughts that burn like irons if you think.

With my "Plunka-lunka-lunka-lunka-lunk!"
Here's a trifle on account of pleasure past,
Ere the wit that made you win gives you eyes to see your sin
And--the heavier repentance at the last!

Let the organ moan her sorrow to the roof--
I have told the naked stars the Grief of Man!
Let the trumpet snare the foeman to the proof--
I have known Defeat, and mocked it as we ran!
My bray ye may not alter nor mistake
When I stand to jeer the fatted Soul of Things,
But the Song of Lost Endeavour that I make,
Is it hidden in the twanging of the strings?

With my "Ta-ra-rara-rara-ra-ra-rrrp!"
[Is it naught to you that hear and pass me by?]
But the word--the word is mine, when the order moves the line
And the lean, locked ranks go roaring down to die!

The grandam of my grandam was the Lyre--
[Oh, the blue below the little fisher-huts!]
That the Stealer stooping beachward filled with fire,
Till she bore my iron head and ringing guts!
By the wisdom of the centuries I speak--
To the tune of yestermorn I set the truth--
I, the joy of life unquestioned--I, the Greek--
I, the everlasting Wonder-song of Youth!

With my "Tinka-tinka-tinka-tinka-tink!"
[What d'ye lack, my noble masters! What d'ye lack?]
So I draw the world together link by link;
Yea, from Delos up to Limerick and back!

But surely if Gluon wiped out the last six months, even only on a temporay basis, then he wipes out the six months which contain the point at which his probability waveform collapsed to one particular improbability, then he no longer exists in a form capabale of eating the Mudcat, or any other cat for that matter.

In short, losing bits of Mudcat causes Gluon to stop existing, so he can't lose bits of Mudcat.

All Gluon has to do in the event of temporary temporal loss is to relocate ninety degrees to this space-time locus. Thus when "this" space-time locus (which is actually the point where a sheaf of space-time parabolas overlap) is offset, oh, say, six months, Gluon isn't affected because Gluon isn't in the offset "here-now." Another analogy (the math is far, far clearer!) is that the sheaf of parabolas defining the "here-now" space-time locus actually bend back on themselves because of gravitons, resulting in a toroidal definition. Gluon's relocation might then be compared to a doughnut which has neither hole nor doughnut.

Boy, I sure do wish I could post the math for this! It's just plain elegant Oh well.

I had a facinating dream last night I want to share.
A friend of a friend showed me an opal stone he had and he put it on the ground and the stone turned into many opals and they swirled in a massive hurricane like effect (hard to really discribe)around me. Turning and glimmering and very intense feeling it left with me. I am sitting here trying to describe the feeling without really being able, but shit...
