When I was watching it there were two middle-aged women in the center of the screen, on their cel phones talking to someone and waving. Evidently turned it into their own personal picture phone. That idea has occurred to me also, though I've never followed through. I imagine it's a regular occurance nowadays.

And of course, what you're seeing when that happens is a BS action shot.

Try this for some interesting stuff (you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader or something similar, 'cause it's in pdf). Or just consider the following, from the Salt Lake Tribune of July 24, 2005:

On this day, 158 years ago, Brigham Young and his band of pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, starting a migration that quickly turned Utah into a Mormon-dominated desert realm.
That domination - at least in terms of raw numbers - appears to be nearing its end.
Within the next three years, the Mormon share of Utah's population is expected to hit its lowest level since The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints started keeping membership numbers. And if current trends continue, LDS residents no longer will constitute a majority by 2030.
These projections are based on normally secret membership counts the LDS Church voluntarily hands over to Utah's Office of Planning and Budget, under what it assumed was a binding confidentiality agreement. The state planning office uses the county-by-county numbers to help estimate future population growth.

The whole thing is here.

How barbaric to try and make hay out of other people's creative efforts, and rampage around in glee while doing so; downright savage, actually. SNiff.

Yes, I quite agree, Amos. Barbarians at the gates, uncouth and unwashed masses of hoipolloi everywhere one looks...why, I become so very upset I could nearly spill my tea!

NEW MICROPRINTING TECHNIQUE IMPROVES NANOSCALE FABRICATION, August 19
Scientists will announce next month a new technique called microdisplacement printing, which makes possible the highly precise placement of molecules during the fabrication of nanoscale components for electronic and sensing devices.
Full story at http://www.physorg.com/news5904.html

If this is true, and useable with different kinds of molecules, we are looking at a major hinge point for future technology. In modern shops, custom parts are already made by "printing then" out of liquid plastic layer by layer to get a prototype or a mold from a CAD drawing.

Imagine your laser-printer churning out tiny printed solar cells, for example, or other micro-devices.

We are in for even MORE interesting times ahead.

I declare, lads and lasses; have you all become stout realists?

Rise up again, Mom. Yeah I know, but that's the only universe we have left, and that's how it works. And I don't have time to go shopping for new.

Sorry, Amos, but we got locked outta the house today! Mom said "It's hot as hell, but go out and play anyway, you need some sun." And the door slapped me on the backside on my way out (well, actually, I was trying for the second time to post to Joybell's thread and it just refused to cooperate. Said it was too hot to do anything today. The door just snuck away, it didn't hit me, but being an English major, I'd like to embellish a little.)

Um, getting back to cod - I found this:

Piece of Cod

You don't normally find human heads inside cod. But they had at Morgan's Fish Wholesalers, in the gut of a four-footer they were cutting up for market.

Portchester Police Chief Paul Mansbridge scowled as he looked at the fish, lying on its side with its head removed and belly slit. The smell in the warehouse hit his Midwestern nose like a fist.

I know how you feel, pal, Mansbridge thought, looking into the cod's dead, staring eyes.

Turning his attention to the warehouse manager, he asked, "Who sold you this one?"

"Hard to say. Could be one of three or four brought in their catch from the weekend." Joe Mayne was a small, thin man with a pinched face, wearing a T-shirt, jeans, and a Budweiser cap. He looked uncomfortable, but Mansbridge couldn't decide if it was because of the human head on the table between them, the chill in the building, or perhaps because the chief wasn't a local.

"I need names and phone numbers, any other contact information you've got." Mayne nodded and quickly walked out of the warehouse.

Mansbridge turned to the county coroner, Al Schumacher. "What do you think?"

Schumacher, a heavy, balding man whose shoulders were stooped from too many years of leaning over his work, squinted through thick, square-framed glasses as he studied the head.

"This," he said slowly, "is the piece of cod, which passeth all understanding."

Hey, MOM, I have to go outside this morning and mow the back yard, but let me in later, okay? Please? It's too hot again to play outside all day. I'll plan the rest of my day for work in the shade or in the house. And I think maybe we should have fish for dinner. Thanks for the head's up! :)

Mom,
Mom,
You really is da bomb
The quintessential parading
Of presence and aplomb,
The fountainhead of wisdom,
And of virtue stength and calm,
There's never been a better friend to me
Than Mom.

How's that rich redde wyne going, Amos? Is it going to your head by any chance? Better hang onto it!

THE HEAD                Bernard Bolan

I'll tell a tale as black as night, as grim as grim can be,
Of the day I paid my mortgage down at the A.M.P.
Directed to the fifteenth floor, into the lift I got.
A fellow's head came in after me but the rest of him did not.
The doors closed like a guillotine, the lift flew like a bird,
All the way to the fifteenth floor the head said not a word.
When I got up to the office the mortgage man did say
"Keeping ahead with your payments sir?" then he turned his head away.

Chorus 1:
Just a little head, nearly round and rather red,
Came into my lift and life that day.
Just a little head, but as the A.M.P. man said,
"Not wishing to seem funny, but we only want your money,
And we'd rather that you took your head away".

When I got back to the entrance hall the crowd had formed a queue
Which stretched right up to Hunter St., the headless man to view.
When I walked out with my new-found friend not a word was said,
So busy with his body no-one bothered with his head.
Once away fram all the crush I studied my new head:
With piggy eyes and double chin he must have been well-fed.
He looked a trifle thirsty, and a pub I did percieve,
So I bought my friend a schooner, but he leaked all down my sleeve.

Chorus 2:
Just a little head, nearly round and very dead,
The fruits of automation's gentle arts.
Just a little head, but as the ambulance man said,
"Well I'm very good with shoulders, and with backbones bent by boulders,
But there's little one can do without the parts."

Like Anne Boleyn I walked around the Stock Exchange that day.
The market fell, and with the smell the brokers moved away.
I went up to the Library, and a chappie grabbed my sleeve.
"It'll have to stay out here", he said, "collect it when you leave".
But in the end, like all good things, our friendship had to cease,
So I took my head to Phillips St., to the Sergeant of Police.
He sent me first to Homicide, and then to C.I.B.
And finally, Lost Property, who'd got another three!

Chorus 3:
Just a little head, so be careful where you tread
If you step round to the cop-shop any day.
Just a little head, but as the Chief Inspector said,
"It's been noted and inspected, and if it is not collected,
You can come and take your bloody head away".

Flounces into the room and throws her disheveled self down on a comfy couch in Mom's front room

Before the blankety-blank router decided to bump us off line and the IP stuff decided to act up and I had to test the wiring on all of this stuff AND reinstall the IP software (and as you can guess got bounced from Mudcat before I could say what I was going to say) I was going to say:

Geez, the simplest of sentences and I still can't type it correctly.

    "So does the U.S. Government."

Rapaire, your point is a stretch well taken, all things considered. Hows about we consider this a conversation that happened in loo of sometime better at the time?

I wonder what I was thinking? It doesn't make much sense (except the "loo" part). I'm sure it meant something back then. How fleeting these ideas.

Bleh. I'm going to bed. It has been one of those Internet (ahd hardware) Long Strange Trips and I arrived back where I started. Double bleh.

I've always thought that this was a cool poem/prayer:

I bind unto myself today
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same
The Three in One and One in Three.

I bind this today to me forever
By power of faith, Christ's incarnation;
His baptism in Jordan river,
His death on Cross for my salvation;
His bursting from the spiced tomb,
His riding up the heavenly way,
His coming at the day of doom
I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself the power
Of the great love of cherubim;
The sweet 'Well done' in judgment hour,
The service of the seraphim,
Confessors' faith, Apostles' word,
The Patriarchs' prayers, the prophets' scrolls,
All good deeds done unto the Lord
And purity of virgin souls.

I bind unto myself today
The virtues of the star lit heaven,
The glorious sun's life giving ray,
The whiteness of the moon at even,
The flashing of the lightning free,
The whirling wind's tempestuous shocks,
The stable earth, the deep salt sea
Around the old eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today
The power of God to hold and lead,
His eye to watch, His might to stay,
His ear to hearken to my need.
The wisdom of my God to teach,
His hand to guide, His shield to ward;
The word of God to give me speech,
His heavenly host to be my guard.

Against the demon snares of sin,
The vice that gives temptation force,
The natural lusts that war within,
The hostile men that mar my course;
Or few or many, far or nigh,
In every place and in all hours,
Against their fierce hostility
I bind to me these holy powers.

Against all Satan's spells and wiles,
Against false words of heresy,
Against the knowledge that defiles,
Against the heart's idolatry,
Against the wizard's evil craft,
Against the death wound and the burning,
The choking wave, the poisoned shaft,
Protect me, Christ, till Thy returning.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.
By Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

I know one should not be disagreeable in Mom's parlor.

Instead one should offer constructive alternatives.

So, here's a prayer:

May all beings be filled with joy and peace.
May all beings everywhere,
The strong and the weak,
The great and the small,
The mean and the powerful,
The short and the long,
the subtle and the gross:
May all beings everywhere,
Seen and unseen,
Dwelling far off or nearby,
Being or waiting to become:
May all be filled with lasting joy.
Let no one deceive another,

Let no one anywhere despise another,
Let no one out of anger or resentment
Wish suffering on anyone at all.
Just as a mother with her own life
Protects her child, her only child, from harm,
So within yourself let grow
A boundless love for all creatures.

Let your love flow outward through the universe,
To its height, its depth, its broad extent,
A limitless love, without hatred or enmity.
Then as you stand or walk,
Sit or lie down,
As long as you are awake,
Strive for this with a one-pointed mind;
Your life will bring heaven to earth

OR this simpler one:

Entrusting in the Primal Vow of Buddha,

Calling out the Buddha-name,

I shall pass through the journey of life with strength and joy.

Revering the Light of Buddha,

Reflecting upon my imperfect self,

I shall proceed to live a life of gratitude.

Following the Teachings of Buddha,

Listening to the Right Path,

I shall share the True Dharma with all.

Rejoicing in the compassion of Buddha,

Respecting and aiding all sentient beings,

I shall work towards the welfare of society and the world.

This is the one for me:

Charge of the Goddess - Traditional by Doreen Valiente, as adapted by Starhawk:

Listen to the words of the Great Mother, Who of old was called Artemis, Astarte, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Cerridwen, Diana, Arionrhod, Brigid, and by many other names:

Whenever you have need of anything, once a month, and better it be when the moon is full, you shall assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of Me Who is Queen of all the Wise.

You shall be free from slavery, and as a sign that you be free you shall be naked in your rites.

Sing, feast, dance, make music and love, all in My Presence, for Mine is the ecstasy of the spirit and Mine also is joy on earth.

For My law is love is unto all beings. Mine is the secret that opens the door of youth, and Mine is the cup of wine of life that is the cauldron of Cerridwen, that is the holy grail of immortality.

I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal, and beyond death I give peace and freedom and reunion with those that have gone before.

Nor do I demand aught of sacrifice, for behold, I am the Mother of all things and My love is poured out upon the earth.

Hear the words of the Star Goddess, the dust of Whose feet are the hosts of Heaven, whose body encircles the universe:

I Who am the beauty of the green earth and the white moon among the stars and the mysteries of the waters,

I call upon your soul to arise and come unto me.

For I am the soul of nature that gives life to the universe.

From Me all things proceed and unto Me they must return.

Let My worship be in the heart that rejoices, for behold, all acts of love and pleasure are My rituals.

Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence within you.

And you who seek to know Me, know that the seeking and yearning will avail you not, unless you know the Mystery: for if that which you seek, you find not within yourself, you will never find it without.

For behold, I have been with you from the beginning, and I am That which is attained at the end of desire.

Oooooo. . . I think I've got a case of whiplash, watching this stuff fly by. That long one was out of the blue (to be followed by the mismatched duo of Buddha and Starhawk. . . I won't even go there. . . ) You know how it is with compost--sometimes it gets too hot and you need to spread it around a little. We need some of the garden variety stuff to let that other batch cool off a little.

Toward that end, a bit of fluff: for some reason when I was searching for the image above this page turned up. Don't know why, but I figure someone might enjoy it.

My brain spasm for the day:

Ran into this on another thread from Rapaire, and was wondering why you have books like that about.

According to Captain W. E. Fairbairn, in Get tought! How to win in hand-to-hand fighting as taught to the British Commandos and the U. S. Armed Forces (Paladin Press reprint, 1979; "an exact reproduction of the original" [1942]), page 99, figure 112, the heart lies 3 1/2 inches below the surface and a knife attack to it would result in instantaneous lossof consciousness and death would occur in 3 seconds.
