It wouldn't be that difficult to hire people who know something about pruning, or to give them some training. Instead they seem to go out of their way to hire cretins who smash and slash their way across private property. I hear regular stories like this on the weekly gardening program I listen to on a local radio station.

Hey, Mom's getting out a little these days. She was just over on another thread wishing MMario a happy birthday. Good for you, Mom!

I'd like to do a little monkey-wrenching around these parts myself, with the loggers, billboards, beaver-trappers (fucks don't even eat the meat), snowmobilers, and land developers. Funny you mention monkey-wrenching. I'm just now into Edward Abbey's-The Best Of- 1984 copy of shorts. His writing always has a tendency to rile me up!

Shoot them bastards and plant 'em in the garden, it'll put eyes on yer taters, ears on da corn, not to mention enough shit ta fertilize the hole damn plot!

Hi, Mom. It's Satruday, so I don't have to go to school.

But Rapaire-
Is not living the 'School of Life'?
Is not Moab the 'School of Life's Moral Teachings'?
Is not Mudcat Cafe the 'School of All Knowing, Seeing, Learning'?

:::School is in baby!:::

My next door neighbor just emailed this to me.

How to install a wireless security system:

Go to a second-hand store and buy a pair of men's used work
boots, a really big pair. Put them outside your front door on
top of a copy of Guns and Ammo magazine. Put a dog dish beside
it, a really big dish. Leave a note on your front door that
says something like "Bubba, Big Mike and I have gone to get
more ammunition - back in 1/2 an hr. Don't disturb the pit
bulls. They've just been wormed and they are a little edgy."

I'm finished checking my email, I took my dogs for a walk and fed them. I still don't have a voice and I feel like crap and need to go sleep. You all carry on without me today.

Where'd I leave that netti pot? . . .

Sometimes, like my noble friend, the esteemed and scholarly Rapaire, I too am tempted to release the thin edge of rule and go forth wild and free, unschooled, unkempt, undisciplined, uninhibited, uncompressed, untrained, unruly, unhampered, unafraid, and without barriers.

But then, I'm like, "What would people think?"

So I don't.

... uninhibited... But then, I'm like, "What would people think?"

Tsk. If you were uninhibited you wouldn't care what people thought. Did Einstein care what people thought about his General and Special theories? Did Newton care what people thought about the calculus or his idea of gravity? Did Rene Descartes care about what people thought about his thought, and if he did care, would he have disappeared? Did Werner Von Braun care what people thought? Or Stravinski? Or Beethoven? Or Huddie Ledbetter? Or Adolf Hitler? Or Cecil Rhodes? Or Mother Theresa? Or John XXIII? Or Jack the Ripper? Or Charlemagne? Or Aristotle?

No sir! They were all uninhibited, just like everyone who has made a lasting mark on the world. They would skip naked among the hollyhocks just as frequently as they would do something to help the poor or depraved. Your inhibitions are caused by what you think people will think, and it is preventing you from reaching your full potential. Please, for your sake, remember that if you painted your body bright yellow and ran around town yelling "Choo! Choo! I'm a train!" no one would think badly of you -- they would know that you are a person of genius and would be envious of the impression you will make on the world.

Besides, you live in Southern California and no one would notice anyway.

That's all very well, but if you want to be invited to people's parties and get togethers then it is imperative to remain in their good graces, isn't it? A complete lack of inhibitions should only be reserved for those private moments, in my opinion.

Ronnie baby, you've never been to Southern California, have you? Never been to one of the parties they throw out there? Lemme tell ya, sweets, that it's not your drink-tea-with-your-little-finger-crooked English parties, but a party. None of those long dresses unless they're slit up to your navel and meets your decolletage at a tiny button. None of that fugueing chamber music, either. They aren't tea-and-crumpets things, Ronnie babe, but more like tea-and-strumpets. Why, if the cops don't come to a SoCal party it was a flop! You oughta attend one, babes. Maybe Amos'll invite you to the next one he has, but you'll have to really learn to like MD 20/20, Boone's Farm, and Cheez Whiz first.

You call that a party? Over here in Tejas they round up the barbecue trailers and cook the goat, beef, pork, and chicken with lots of secret sauces. Same with bean recipes. Get a bunch of long necks in a bunch of coolers, set out under the picnic shelter or porch (or for many folks, the open garage) and have yerself a good time.

Where I grew up in the PacNW, however, we were always looking for excuses to barbecue or grill salmon or halibut or trout or steelhead, any of our good cold water fish. Mmmmmm!

No, I don't call that a party. Southern Californians call that a party. Out here in the mountains...a party...well, does the term Rendezvous mean anything to you? A month of drinking, wrassling, shooting, wenching, lieing, eating, trading, swapping, racing, drinking, and generally raising hell?

Well, we don't do that very much any more.

But I will grill some salmon or cutthroat or steelhead or halibut and have some Fat Tire or Moose Drool or Blue Canoe or Trout Slayer iced down, maybe some of that great Idaho vodka laid by, fresh berries chilling in the 'fridge, biscuits cookin' in the oven (Dutch or GE), a big ol' salad of herbs and baby greens, some guitars and things close by, and the sun goin' down behind the mountains to the West while we watch the golfers chase their self-propelled golf carts down the fairway....

Humph! You talk as if I were some kind of prude, living a sheltered existence here. I'm a modern British girl! I know exactly what's going on and I know how to have fun too, but you don't get invited to the parties of the people who actually matter in this world by behaving like a drunken, barbaric, colonial idiot. I suppose you stupid So-Cal swingers think you're on top of the world, don't you, but you're just wallowing around in a tiny little mudhole of your own creation and I bet that not one single genuinely important person is ever seen at any of your parties. Not one! Whereas at the parties that I go to I meet the people who count. I could drop names, but I'm not like that. Besides, I wouldn't want to completely crush the lot of you and cause you to slink off in self-pitying misery by naming the famous people that I hang out with. I'll just let you wonder about it and go mad with curiosity. Ha! Ha!

Ronnie baby, you leave me speechless. Why don't you drop around, say in about four or five days? The finals of the National Championship Rodeo will be in town and I'll fix you up with a bull rider or, if you'd rather, a bronc rider. Drink six or seven long necks of Coors, listen to some of that good ol' Western music (not Country-Western!), eat a little sonofabitch stew and some homemade biscuits fresh outa the dutch oven, listen to the coyotes...get to know that rider better....

What say, girl? Betcha you'd like the LEATHER chaps, the LEATHER saddles, the LEATHER quirts, the LEATHER vests, the spurs....

The idea of a western rodeo is quite stimulating...all those huge animals and rugged, tanned men simply crashing around! It sounds smashing to me. Shouldn't that be "...yelling "Honk! Honk! I'm a school bus!"? Trains tend toward blacks, grays and browns. Sure, they may have individual cars which are yellow, but that doesn't make the whole train yellow. Maybe they have all-yellow trains in some countries, but this is America, where we embrace multicolorism in our rail transport!

I see a lot of green trains. (Never was sure which Burlington that Burlington Northern was named after. There is a nice little town in the Skagit Valley of Washington called Burlington. It's just north of Arlington, Washington, but my folks told me that George Washington wasn't born there.)

The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad began operation in the 1840s by running a single passenger lashup over recycled rails from Aurora to Chicago. However, within the next three years, the railroad was able to expand into the true namesake - holding trackage extending through the cities of Chicago, Burlington, Quincy, and Aurora. The CB&Q became well known as one of the finest "granger roads" or a railroad which served agricultural areas, often through smaller branch trackage. In 1849, the Burlington Route staged its last spike ceremony. Before that, they had been operating to whatever the current end of trackage was.

The Burlington Route was able to enter the trade markets in 1862. As of this year, that railroad has been the only Class I US railroad to constantly pay dividends and never run into debt or default on a loan. With the First World War having the same effect on the Burlington as on all other railroads, during the 1920s the Burlington Route had an increasingly heavy amount of equipment flooding the yards. With the advent of the Great Depression, the CB&Q held a good portion of this for scrap. Despite the decrease of passengers, it was during this time that the Q introduced the famed Zephyrs.
After the Second World War, the CB&Q was inundated by the overworked steam locomotives existent in a fleet that was already beginning to dieselize. By 1959, the last steam trains had been run over the Q.

The Burlington merged with the Great Northern, Northern Pacific and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle railroads on March 2, 1970 to form the Burlington Northern Railroad.

The Burlington in question is due west and a hair north of Chicago, in Illinois.

Yes M'am, and eight Quincys: California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusettes, Michigan, and Missouri. I think there's one in Oregon, and possibly Washington, as well.

Now, I was born, bred, and raised up in the one in Illinois, and I've been to the ones in California, Indiana, and Michigan.

Only one Chicago, though. I've been there, too.

The tracks of the Burlington line go right through the middle of Burlington, and then angle north and west from there. Reasonable grounds for an assumption. But we all kknow what assumptions are good for.

Here, believe it or not, is a SERIOUS question. Really.

Back about 20 years or so ago my brother Ted got a great deal on a Japanese-made, custom-made, banjo (there are no labels on it). The guy who it was made for didn't pick it up, so Ted got it cheap. Well, Ted traded it to brother Tony, who plucked it a few times and hasn't touched it since as far as I know. Tony owes me $33, so should I work a deal with him for the banjo? Ted says it's got (or had) a very fast action (much like Ted himself, who enjoyed such a reputation during his pre-marital college days).

Are you going to give it a decent burial after you shoot it or pierce it with one of your swords?

I want the banjo for an experiment. I think that not only should strings run up the neck from the bridge (or whatever you call the place where the strings are attached at the bottom), but also across, forming a right-angle cross. This way you could even add more strings of varying lengths. This should permit a far wider range of sound than a typical banjo will have, especially in the upper registers. True, it will make it a little more complex to play, but the overall results should be worth it.

(Yes, I'm going to propose the deal to him. I've never owned a banjo before, and since my two brothers have owned it, why not me as well? We pass things around like this all the time -- once I owned two of kids and had an option on his baseball bat.)
