The Weather eventually noticed all those bonefires the other night at last, and we have clear blue skies all around. Today will be beautiful, and should get to a reasonable temeperature, maybe even 70. And it's my Birthday

Wow! Your 70th birthday, and they celebrated by trying to light you on fire! Sure hope it's happy, but not TOO happy, because if it's too happy you might spontaneously ignite. That happened to a friend of mine. He got too happy and the alcohol fumes just poured out of his pores. Then he lit a cigar and POOH! he was gone before we could even save the bottle of whisky. It was a terrible tragedy, and he left no wives or children or anyone behind. When we went through his things we did find a huge pile of overdue bills, though. We submitted his bar bills to the Guinness book, but they said that they didn't want to encourage wild and irresponsible drinking. We thought this was somewhat strange and told the Guinness people that, only they never replied -- just sent some beer mats, which we used to scrape up Tom's ashes. We kept them in a Four Roses bottle for some months, but one day the next winter it was pretty danged icy outside and we sprinkled ashes on the steps, and well, you can guess what happened to poor ol' Tom. But then, he'd been a good guy, helping little old ladies across the streets and stuff like that and making sure they were okay if they fell down after he snatched their purse, and we knew that he would have wanted it that way.

Bonefire, bonefire, calling the sky
Heartfire, brainfire, never say "Die",
Soulfire, soulfire, always alone,
Bright in the brain, and bad in the bone,
Broad in the beams, light in the dark,
Bonefire, bonefire, dance with my heart.

Okay, Google is catching on, in little bits anyway, to MOAB. The ads are for "Man on Fire video" and "KY Bourbon Triangle" (is that anything like the Bermuda triangle? Drinkers disappear into their whiskey?).

Stilly dives across the screen and scoops up MOM in the second from the bottom line of the page and swoops her back up to the top again. These prolonged absences mean we must act swiftly when the 'Cat returns.

Huh? I haven't had a prolonged absence. I've been here all the while and I can prove it.

When will you just give in and admit that Shatner is everything you always wished you could be?

Help, Mom! I have a burning, itching, unbearable desire to start a copycat thread called "Who Are the Mudcat Sno-Cones?"!!! But if I do it'll piss off Amos, Joe Offer, Big PrMick, Katlaughing, Sorcha and probably a few more people. But that's okay, 'cause it doesn't piss you off, does it Mom?

When will you give in, and admit that you are an obsessive compulsive schizophrenic with delusions?

There's a DNS, a database server, 3 catalog servers, and two Citrix servers running here. The room gets warm. This stinks. Maybe tomorrow everyone can be up and running again. Maybe. I'm going to dinner, have a stiff drink or six, and go to bed.

Better keep that room under 90 degrees (the cooler the better) or those servers will be toast!

We were locked out for a while, and at one point this morning I was able to send mom to the top, then it crashed again some more. Some of us noticed, some didn't. But those of us who noticed know who we are. There's more than one way to generate hot air with a computer!

Perhaps, Amos, LH is a delusion with a compulsion towards obsessive schizophrenia. Obviously, this "Shatner" is a delusion, and I find it quite possible for a delusion (viz., LH) to be deluded. And a delusion certainly could suffer from mental opportunities, especially on MOAB. This was definitively shown by the immortal B. F. Skinny in his groundbreaking work Mit der Dumheit (Dresden, 1953), in which he recounts the stories of "Sylvia" and "Wilhelm B. Bergdorfer, 1291-3 Friedrichstrasse, Augsburg." Sylvia was quite a remarkable delusion, and I shan't bore you with the details except to say that a movie which enjoyed a certain popularity was based upon the account and released in 8mm format. The latter case was one of a man who called Skinny "deluded" (a classic case of transference), stomped out, slammed the door, and never paid his bill.

Thus you can see that LH himself (or herself, or itself, as the case may be) could well be a delusion. ECT will bring you back to reality, assuming you want to participate in it. I, personally, do my best to ignore reality but I certainly wouldn't foist my own beliefs off on others.

Doctor,

What is your opinion if I have a friend who writes that he is a Snocone, when actually, he is a librarian? It is well known that Liberry is not a sno-cone flavor, and I cannot understand why he persists in the assertion, as he definitely knows better.

'Tis the song of Rapaire
Standing at the bar-room door
While the shameful midnight revel
Rages wildly as before.

MOAB, dear MOAB, come home with me, now!
The clock on the steeple strikes one;
You said you were coming straight home from the mall,
As soon as your shopping was done.
Our fire has gone out, our house is all dark,
And Stilly's been waiting since tea,
With poor brother Amos so sick in her arms,
And no one to help her but me.
Come home, come home, come home!
Please MOAB, dear MOAB come home.

cho: Hear the sweet voice of the child,
Which the night winds repeat as they roam!
Oh who could resist this most plaintive of cries,
"Please MOAB dear MOAB come home."

MOAB, dear MOAB, come home with me, now!
The clock on the steeple strikes two;
The night has grown colder and Amos is worse,
But he has been calling for you.
Indeed he is worse, Stilly says he will croak
Perhaps before morning shall dawn;
And this is the message she sent me to bring,
"Come quickly! Or he will be gone."
Come home, come home, come home!
Please MOAB, dear MOAB come home.

MOAB, dear MOAB, come home with me, now!
The clock on the steeple strikes three,
The house is so lonely, the hours are so long
For poor weeping Stilly and me.
Yes we are alone now; poor Amos has kicked
And gone to the realms down below,
And these were the very last words that he said
"I want to kiss MOAB goodnight."
Come home, come home, come home!
Please MOAB, dear MOAB come home.

I have one friend who lined his rec room with fine wooden panels -- real planks. It gives the room a rich, warm feeling, of comfort and being supported by authentic richness of spirit.

And, I know another guy, from a different part of the country and a different economic class, who lined his rec room with those vinyl sheets that are printed with images of wood grain and get tacked up onto furring strips. It makes the rec room seem brown but shallow, sort of...kind of a tacky poor muzzy imitation of the real thing.

A real poem, filtered through a global search and replace to change the nouns, is kind of like that vinyl-clad rec room, ya know what I mean? -- almost the right color, but a certain quality short.

But they make for such good melodrama!

Lots of storms this week, and my ratty old hackberry by the side fence dropped a very large limb. . . into the middle of my next door neighbor's shade garden. I've been out cutting branches and making a stack and now I have to go borrow a chainsaw, Mom, and cut the biggest piece down (it's still attached to the tree). We may head to the nursery to buy a couple of replacement plants. Don't wait up for me.

It pays to be a good neighbor with this. They have an even BIGGER hackberry further back in the yard, and if it comes down, it'll take out the corner of my back fence!

The winter night was closing in,
But the shivering child stood bold
At the corner of the emptying street
Newspapers clasped against the cold.

"Oh will you buy a paper, sir?
It would give me wonderful cheer,
For my mother, a widow, is ill at home
And the medicines are so very dear."

The passing gentlemen cuffed the lad,
"Get away, you little beggar!
Your mother is ill! I've heard it before!
You'd spend the money on beer and cigars."

"Oh, no, kind sir!" the young man cried,
"Our mother is very sick!
And there's only Alice -- she's three -- and me
To care for her, you lousy prick!

"Go on to your house with warmth and lights,
To your food and drink so rich,
Alice and I will dine on a moldy old bone
You rotten old sonovabitch!

"But the time will come when you will repent,
And that time is coming fast!
When the world's downtrodden throw off their chains,
And the Revolution comes at last!"

"Get on with you, you Anarchist punk!"
The gentleman said with a grin,
"I know your kind -- you're a Wobbly kid!
Be glad I don't turn you in!"

"Bastard!" said the child, and from his pocket
Drew a revolver, a new thirty-two,
And he shot the plutocrat right in the balls,
Took his wallet and ran. Wouldn't you?

The word "henchman" is derived from the Middle-English word "henshman" which comes from Old English "hengestman".

"Hengest" is the Old English word for "stallion" which is derived from Old High German "hengist", meaning "gelding".

So, somewhere in the linguistic process the horse grew his balls back.

Mom, it's storming again. I have lots of trees, but I'd really rather mow the grass than cut up broken trees. If I need any assistance, I know a guy from Floribama who is expert at cutting up storm-damaged trees. . .

I THINK that I shall never see
A woodheap lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the my neighbor's garden's best;

A tree that doesn't look so Good today,          5
And lifts her leafy limbs from clay;

A tree that may in summer wear
A twist of fencing in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who closely lives now with link-chain.   10

Fence posts may come from foolish me,
But only God can break a tree.

I have a friend named Kevin Kilmer, but the last poem he wrote was

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
I really stink
And so do you.

Knowing that he would never write a better bit o' verse he gave up the poetry game and went into a cloister. Shortly thereafter he was forcibly ejected for putting the moves on the novice nuns and, mostly, because he was a Protestant. But he picked himself up, dusted himself off, and like the real man he is, threw a tantrum about how unfair it all was. At that point a window opened high in the cloister wall and he looked up to see the lovely face of Novice Clotilda staring down at him and she threw him a love token so that he would always remember her and what might have been.

Cleaning off the contents of the chamber pot as best he could he made his way back to civilization, such as it is, and started a new life as a guttersnipe.

Awww, my remark on the Mudcat Poetry thread (all brazenly reissued from MOM's house) seems to have disheartened its originator. Oh, well, people will just have to come to the source!

Another wet night, lots of thunder, but the trees appear to be intact. I still have to go help haul away the branches from that big limb that came down. Then I'm going to throw out this pair of shoes that I realized on the dog walk this morning have just about fallen apart and there is a gaping toe in one (all while fulfilling their role as "yard shoes" after they stopped being "casual work shoes.")

Going to the source is wisdom in itself.

But doing it to avoid responsibility is...hmmm...actually, a contradiction in terms.

Anyway, my point is why is Mom only down sub-lineal posts from falling completely off the page. Has that EVER happened? Where would she go if she did? Is there a "down there" there? Would she ever land?

Hell, Amos -- you know that Mom would land on her feet! She's a cagey old cat, she is. And I think I remember that she might have perhaps maybe have fallen off the page, but that was early on and she was promptly rescued from The Waters Of Oblivion. I think that Bee-Dubya-Ell might have been the one who plunged, without regard for himself, into the Stygian darkness Beyond The End Of Threads, where the waters of Lethe erase the memories of Threads Gone By, and pulled Mom, coughing and sputtering, safely Up.

Then again, it might have been someone else.

Does Shatner have a girl friend? Does he had butter and agitate violently, and if so, isn't he a bit old for that sort of goings-on? Why, the man (I'm assuming that Shatner is male, although thankfully I have no direct, first-hand proof either way) must be well over 75! Yes, yes, I know he might look younger, but you know, "What price goat glands?" and, of course, cosmetic surgery can do absolute wonders these days.

Remember, it was the 70's and he was young and hunky and possessed of that incredible charm and wry wit that conquered many a fair damsel of the day. I've met people who were in school with him, and they say he stole a lot of other guys' girlfriends.

Now when you get over gazing at that and realize that she has dated Shatner, but NOT you...

Yes, when you get over it...then go out and rent the obscure movie "Impulse" from 1974, one of Shatner's most cleverly acted gems of cinematic history, but a movie so subtle in its sendup of popular mores that it was completely misunderstood and mostly ignored by the general public, and savaged by reviewers, like this doofus...

"William Shatner stars in this hilarious, post Star Trek, psychological "thriller" about a playboy who has one big problem, he can't help killing all the women he falls in love with. You see, when he was a little boy he caught his mommy having sex with a crazed Vietnam vet. This bothered little Shatner, causing him to stab the bad man to death with a sword. Well now little Shatner is all grown up, complete with Dolomite wardrobe and smooth moves, and he is ready to take out his psychological trauma on every skirt he sees. Directed by Floridian exploitation great William Grefe, this amazing decent into career suicide is a must see for fans of William Shatner. Co-starring Harold Sakata, better known as Odd Job from the James Bond film Goldfinger, Impulse features some of the most amazingly bad acting ever caught on film. The scenes with Shatner and Sakata catching up on old times are stupefying in their ineptness and equally hilarious."

Poor man! He just didn't get it, obviously. Well, that's the way it is with genius like Shatner's. It leaves most people just at a loss, because it boldly goes where none have dared go before!
