So...what is the diameter of Jesus?

The Question is, will MOM be satisfied with the text while you are off gallivanting, rather then seeing your smiling face as you devotedly tend to her needs in a personal appearance that shows you care?

Gawd, yes. That question was what kept me awake for hours last night...

MOM, Amos has been influenced by the snark side. The gizmo-crazed purveyors of communcation that is capturing the world, starting with California but spreading outward fast.

If he comes into the room refuse to speak to him until he turns off any devices in his hands, pockets, or belt pouches.

This is the only way to be sure you really have his attention.

And don't let him set the phone on vibrate instead of turning it off.

ESPECIALLY if he keeps it in his crotch! I knew...never mind.

The first phase of iPhone ownership is infatuation.

The second is expansion.

The third is mastery.

The fourth is Emergence as an Empowered Human. Not everyone can Google by voice and learn the diameter of Jesus while walking on the beach.

So...what is it you like about it? Is it the fact that you can surf the net no matter where you are? Does it cost you money to do that?

And what is "google by voice"?

I am but beginning my journey. So far I like the sense of connection, the fact that I can get both my home and office email anywhere, can surf the net, dowload songs, play songs and write notes and letters anywhere I happen to be (within the bounds of connection either through a wireless node or a cell node).

Google by voice means you tap a button, hold the phone up to your face and tell it what you want it to google, and it sends the search string to google and displays the result.

I love the stretch-and-shrink technique with your fingertips and the sliding down a long page or list with the stroke of one finger. I love being able to watch a youtube video while walking down the street, if I wish. Or finding and downloading a PodCast from a university and listening to some arcane lecture on history or science or some such while strolling.

There's another application that enables you to point the iPhone at any book's cover, and research the book on the 'Net, finding reviews, ISBN, Amazon listings, etc. I don't have it. There's another that will look up a song for you if you point the iPhone at the radio or hum into it enough notes to make it recognizable. It will look up the song and find a recording of it for you if it can, and tell you the name of the tune and who it was by.

There are over 900 other applications available for free, or for from 1 to 5 dollars.

It's a new plateau of portable information power in the hand. Which does a lot more good than in the Bush.

We're far less high-tech here, but I found a lovely little mp3 player on sale at Office Depot that solves the problem of the inexpensive little one I bought a couple of weeks ago. This menu is a dream, the other one is a nightmare. And my kids have dealt with my cast off experiments (my son has figured out how to trick a broken Samsung how to charge, but he can't add to the contents he first loaded, and my daughter has a larger volume mp3 player we bought online, but it has the same goofy chip and menus as the one I'm returning. SO, we're taking back one and getting three tomorrow. Two are on hold (the only two in the store) and I'll visit another store to get the third. $40 each. Not bad, and we can add those tiny little SD memory cards to boost the memory from 2 gig.

I can do that too--plus scan through voicemails and choose what order to listen to them in, depending on from whom. Oh, and text messages as well, and so on.

Sigh. Too many choices!!

Shortly I'm going to start a compilation of all of the Icelandic sagas (in English, I hasten to add). So very many books...and always new views and insights....

Unlike blogs, text messages, and "r u thr d00d" incomprehensibility. Well, I shan't make judgements but when I want to enjoy the silence of the mountains or listen to the sea rush to shore I turn my cell phone off and even, sometimes, forget to turn it back on.

I do not have an iPhone, but I've played around a bit on my daughter's. She has an instrument tuner application that would be great if only she could figure out how to use it. She also has an application that turns the iPhone into a spirit level. That would be cool to have since I can never find my regular spirit level when we're at art fairs and I need to level my display shelves. And being able to get song lyrics on the fly is neat. When she visited at Christmas we wanted to do J.P.'s "Christmas in Prison" and she Googled the lyrics up. My 57 year-old eyes couldn't read the itty bitty font, but her 28 year-old eyes could, and she was doin' the singin' on that one anyway.

Are you familiar with the work of Shannon and Weaver in communications?

When does communication itself become noise? When does the gadget become the communication? (And don't give me "The medium is the message" because that is neither the title of McLuhan's work or what he was trying to convey.)

I cannot answer for mass culture, which has definitely gravitated in McLuan's way. But I can say that holding the power to exchange amongst those with whom one chooses to communicate--not those to whom one must communicate in order to dramatize McLuan's Complex, a phrase I just invented for an addiction to electronic signals--is a comfort and a strength. Like all things, the beauty f it is in the eye of the beholder.

I think of MOAB as a thing of a certain kind of beauty, even though the average viewer would be hard put to name it.

Stilly, I just finished reading an adventure/thriller type of book by Stephen Hunter called "47th Samurai". It was lent to me by a friend who knows I like stuff about Japan. It's a well written adventure, but extremely bloody. Maybe a bit too bloody for my taste. However, I did find it pretty good reading and interesting.

Now I am re-reading Eckhart Tolle's book "A New Earth" which is excellent. That's much more typical of what I would usually read.

I'm researching the influence of movable type upon the Renaissance and Reformation. William Manchester's book "A World Lit Only By Fire" got me started.

Excellent, well-reasoned book. I recommend it.

You might also enjoy Barbara Tuchman's "In Search Of Folly". It deals with the Reformation, but it also deals with those who feel that an iPhone is the be-all and end-all of technology.

DOn't be asinine, I beg you. You are tilting at straw windmills. This, in you, is both unkind and unfair. I said it was a new plateau, which is correct, but is NOT--as you would have it--a teleological statement, which would be impossible in the context.

I'm struggling to merge the old with the new technology-wise. I've found a new little mp3 that is low end as far as what Amos is toting around, but is much higher grade than the little ones we were trying to make-do with. Now I want it to arrange the chapters properly and not do a William Burroughs shuffle as I "read" a murder mystery.

But my shelves are lined with books that won't be reduced to audio versions, books that I take pleasure in reading myself. Perhaps I should record these for others. . .

As for books, I am working through a slow, rich reconstruction of life in the 1880-1910 period in the east Florida coast Thousand Islands region. A beautiful and evocative job of reconstructing the historical, the linguistic and the personal threads of the time and space, it is called "Killing MIster Watson" by Peter Matthisen. The writing--the choosing of metaphor and tone and twang and rhythm--is very impressive.

I'm sorry, Tuchman's book is entitled "The MARCH of Folly."

Amos, the long silence had much more to do with a good night's sleep than anything else.

Besides, I'm on a public coomputer at a motel in Twin Falls -- just a little romantic get-away for Pat and me.

We'll be slowly wending our way back home very shortly, and facing a mountain of laundry when we get there.

And, of course, there's work tomorrow....

When next I have a party, Amos, I shall be quite sure not to invite you. You are what is known as a "wet blanket" in some quarters. Why not hang out with Eeyore? I just feel, given our history here, that I am duty bound to come up with some quash, deflect, rejoin, poke, tickle, embarrass or counter to your seeping strokes of fantasy. It is my job in Mom's house; I am Mom's gadfly and puncturer, her dry-witted hat-pin, her epée de raison propre, if you will. Imagine, what would you think of me if I failed to rally and parry when you posted some silly piece of fantasmagoria? You'd think I had a fever or was off my feed, for certain!!

I really MUST share this wonderful story of Canadian familial loyalty:

Micheal and Jimmy had promised their uncle George, who had been a seafaring man all his life, to bury him at sea when he died. In due time, he did pass away and the boys planned to keep their promise.

They set off with Uncle George all stitched up in a burial bag and loaded into their rowboat. After a while Micheal says, 'Do yer tink dis is fer 'nuff out, Jimmy?'

Without a word Jimmy slips over the side only to find himself standing in water up to his knees. 'Dis'll never do, Micheal. Let's row out some more.'

After a bit more rowing Jimmy slips over the side again but the water is only upto his belly, so they row on. Again Micheal asks Jimmy, 'Do yer tink dis is fer 'nuff out Jimmy?'

Once again Jimmy slips over the side and almost immediately says, 'No dis'll never do.' The water was only up to his chest.

So on they row and row and row and finally Jimmy slips over the side and disappears. Quite a bit of time goes by and poor Micheal is really getting himself into a state when suddenly Jimmy breaks the surface gasping for breath.

'Well is it deep 'nuff yet, Jimmy?'

'Aye it 'tis bye, hand me da shovel.'
