Beautifully put, Donuel.

We constantly shape our perception of "reality" by how we shape our thoughts about it. As our thoughts change our perceptions of reality change.

As soon as a group of people develop the concept of a "God", then that God exists as a thought-form-energy and becomes part of their reality...but NOT part of the reality of some other person who doesn't think about that God or believe in it.

Anything you think about affects you, specially when you also believe in it. Thus it becomes real...in its effect upon you. It may have no effect at all on someone else, but it affects you because you are thinking about it, and your own thinking affects your being at many levels.

Every fictional character I've worked with in stories has affected me...and often to a far greater extent than many of the so-called "real" people I talk to on this forum! The fictional character that I create is closer to me and in my thoughts more often than most of the people I talk to on this forum. So despite the fact that the fictional character isn't physically in this world, he or she takes real effect upon my consciousness, and that affects my life.

I can, for instance, more easily dispense with (or forget about) Amos than I can dispense with or forget about Chongo Chimp! ;-) Amos doesn't get this, so he frivolously decides to kill off Chongo and knows not what he does. Heh! Well, I guess that's not surprising. He is, after all, the most important (or central) person in his own drama, just as I am in mine.

I know Chongo better than Amos, and I would miss him terribly if he were gone. I'd miss Amos a bit too....but...well...you know. He can't compete with the child of my own imagination. After all, I've never even met him, and I've definitely met Chongo since he resides within my own mental and emotional being. I know him as well as I know myself, and I certainly can't say that about Amos.

The hypnotized person is seeing and hearing thought forms that ARE there...in the consciousness of the hynotized person.

It's rather like experiencing a dream. It's a real event in consciousness, though not in an outward sense of physicality in this physical world of phenomena.

I have been in hypnotic trance, and it's quite interesting, because it's like experiencing 2 completely different realities at the same time...at least it was for me. On the one hand, I was experiencing events in some other lives I appear to have lived (in the past), while at the same time I was fully aware that I was HERE in the here and now, lying on a couch in a hypnotic trance, going through the experiences of a previous lifetime in my mind.

In that sense, it was a more aware situation than most dreams are, because in dreams I am generally ONLY aware of the "dream" reality.

Under hypnosis both realities seemed absolutely real to me...right down to the physcial sensations. Naturally, the one that was more dramatic tended to take up the greater part of my attention at any given time, but I never forgot that I was still in this present reality too, lying there on the couch.

How true, how true.

Of course, you are simply stating what I have been saying all along: you and everything else is MY creation.

That being the case, I would like you to make me 25 years younger than I am now, cure my scoliosis and poor vision, and provide me with enough cash to hire a really good band and record a couple of albums and go on tour in Japan, Holland, or Germany.

Well, y'all have no argument from me; I have wandered these realms for many hours, too, and I think Donuel is quite correct--from one perspective the "all-embracing" material continuum is a pinpoint in a tapestry of rich creations. I do not believe the hypnotic element is necessary, as long as one is in a safe environment in which to focus on the subject.

Now, LH, I do apologize for my uncivil act in bumping off Chongo that way. It may serve as a reminder that practicing solipsism in a communal sphere is, as Rapaire occasionally demonstrates, a less then benevolent act.

But that is no excuse for my rude behaviour, nor is any offered. However, since we are agreed on the remarkable power of creative will applied to populating our territories, how about, rather than a gun-slinging chimp with bad manners and questionable sexual habits, you focus your powers on creating a higher order of being, a Wizard, a Magis Magi, a powerful Enlightener who can beam the good, the true, the inspired into every corner of our shabby common ground and thus raise the standard of being for all of us?

I'd really like to do something of that sort, Amos...and I do imagine such enlightened beings a great deal and I draw inspiration from them...but there's a problem in presenting them here, because they are sacred to me.

I think that many people would show them no respect at all, attack them, ridicule them, and take delight in picking on them endlessly.

And I simply couldn't tolerate it. I will not expose pearls to the assault of swine if I can help it. Therefore I am sparing myself the pain of going through all that by creating more wacky and quirky and troublesome characters...as I don't mind it if people throw stones at them. It doesn't upset me to see a fool like Shane or a rough and tumble character like Chongo or an unassailable fortress of self-satisfied smug superiority like Ms Penelope or William Shatner getting picked on by people. They can take it, and it doesn't hurt me to see them being picked on, because, well, they just might deserve it! ;-)

As for Corridus, he was a cheery little adventurer and all round good fellow, wouldn't you say? Hamsters are pretty straightforward.

I have seen Scoliosis cured over 4 years. The curve in Richard's spine was 5 inches one way and 5 inches the other. His spine looked like a snake. THe agony was hard to watch.
Besides smoking pounds of pot , he did Yoga and underwent Chiropractic treatment twice a week for 3 years then tapered down to occaisional sessions. His back now appears straight.

I know people who use the word 'reality' in a bullying sense. These people allude to the savage reality that they will accept and use any form of violence to achieve their goal of preserving their reality. To these people assasination is but a necessary tool in their toolbox of reality that is justified by previous uses of the tool. The People who say this call themselves Republicans but they are really something far more primitive no matter how much they see themselves as elder statesmen.

u + everything else is my creation.
Rapaire, thats one way to put it but it is more cryptic and poetic than prose.

I know the kind you mean, Donuel--they are on the brink of not surviving and lash out in desperation because, to some degree, their own certainties are eroding fast.

There is one important zig-zag in the metaphysics, though. If you have subscribed to a common universe such as the apparent physical universe, and agreed to its spatiality and continuity and persistence and solidity, etc., and then try to jump up the pole to a high level of awareness and deny all those agreements without fully examining your own part in them, you are chasing a significance and claiming it is an actuality. People do this when they cannot look at existence straight on.

High metaphysical truth is a grand destination, but not so good as a hiding place, if you see my point. This is not an accusation in any way, just an observation about the general workings of the subject.

Amos
Personally I don't see the psychology of imagination as metaphysical or hard to understand. Maybe you have created a variety of metaphysical quarks that confuse more than elucidate like "chasing the significance". There is a minefield of jargon that was probably invented by charlatans to charge for extra lectures or authors who needed more than 3 chapters to get published.
Sometimes complexity is invented for egotisical reasons. Perish the thought, we all know that you would never self agrandize or proclaim prima donna status. However I have read more than a 100 posts of yours that seemed to be intentionaly designed to confound. Then again I ain't that smart and can be confounded easily in the 4th dimension.

Hey have you ever asked your unconscious or a dimensional being to explain something unknown to you in terms you might understand and have the answer appear to you in 3D visual graphics? I did this a lot but to actually say it out loud might cause some people with different word definitions to ascribe a disorder to the process rather than call it a normal phenomenon.

(we tossed the ball to Amos Andy tossed it back a 1000 yards further)

Editorial mode ON:

This, The Mother of All BS Threads, is also like a Zen koan. We MOABites seek enlightenment by spouting BS, having intuited that the juncture of consciousness and absurd wit is one place at which it may be found. It's a bit like Arthur Dent in A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy learning to fly by falling and forgetting to hit the ground. Too much seriousness in the MOAB makes it difficult to fall and down right impossible to forget to hit the ground.

Editorial mode OFF.

WHen in doubt, fall back on a breakfast recipe from 2001. WHich, now being NINE YEARS AGO instead of "just yesterday", is practically antediluvian in perspective, ancient, corroded, old-fashioned and out of date, back there with zoot suits, disco, golden eagles, oxcarts, hand-made bows, muskets, and three-pole travois in the Closet of the Long FOrgotten Old Stuff.

Hey, mom!! You up? Here's a diet smoothie for ya.

As to metaphysics, I did not mean theimagniation is metaphysical, but it is certainly in that boundary zone; it disobeys the laws of physics, and has its own inertial powers, and its own laws. Call it what you will. My core assertion is that it is a fine destination, but less useful as a place of retreat.

Don't panic, Jim! It's not true. I did not create William Shatner. William Shatner was created in the usual fashion...his parents had sexual intercourse, and about nine months later William burst forth upon an unsuspecting world. At first, only a few people noticed, but by the time he had reached the age to attend university at McGill in Montreal, Canada, William was turning heads everywhere with his incredible grasp of the principles of both drama and seduction. He went on to boldly emote on the Shakespearian stage as none had emoted before! Critics were impressed. The public was stunned. And that was only the beginning.

Never fear, Jim, I did not create William Shatner. But if I could have...I definitely would have.

Feeling like a fool can certainly occur for a number of reasons. One would be actually being a fool and catching oneself out at it. Another might be being badly imagined by an author who is oneself something of a fool. A third might be believing one is the imagined product of someone of whom one is NOT in fact the imagined product.

In your case, Captain, all three might apply, but you have demonstrated over and over again you have the courage to face puzzling situations, so I am sure you will sort this one out in short order. If all else fails, ask Spock. He digs logic.

By just forgetting to, like an
ALzheimer's patient who never goes
To the bathroom...
Would this be terrific? Out of space,
Out of time, Down on Newton
And out of this calaboose by
Simply forgetting the laws.
This holds terrific promise
As a way to empty prisons everywhere
And send the rascals flying.

This man is obviously an impostor. He would never arm photon torpedoes in a diplomatic situation.

A torpedo made of photons does not acheive its destructive power through aggregate mass, Rapaire. It is too light, indeed...therein lies the art of its devilish design. Like certain girls from my college days, it works not through doing work but through excitation into states of incandescent irrepressibility.

Penelope IS Winston's wife, you moron!

Here's what I envision: Chongo pounding Amos's pointy little head into a shapeless mass as Amos's paramour Chinga gets fed through a trash compactor by rampaging gorillas who have taken offense at her licentious lifestyle and her utterly unsavoury reputation (which is an insult to all self-respecting primates).

Kirk arrives with Doctor McCoy, having just beamed down on a fact-finding mission. Chongo dusts himself off, says, "Take over, guys," and walks away. McCoy bends down over the prone body of Amos, pulls out a little tricoder thingie and passes it over the San Diego Dimwit. It emits a low buzzing sound. McCoy looks up and says,

"He's dead, Jim."

"No! Really? You're shitting me," says Kirk, rolling his eyes sarcastically. "And what about this one?" (pointing to the hamburger-like remains of Chinga).

"Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not Jesus Christ!" objects McCoy. "I only identify the dead, I don't raise them."

Kirk and McCoy leave the scene. Corridus emerges cautiously from under the trash compactor, cleans his whiskers, looks around brightly and scuttles off in search of further adventure.

A sense of calm and completion settles over the empty stage. The world has somehow become a safer, kinder, friendlier place...

Shane walks out from stage left, scratches himself, yawns, stretches, belches loudly, and lights up a joint. "Geez!" he remarks. "Smells like somethin' died around here, eh?"

The curtain closes.
