I allus said Still was a class act.

Rapp, no, you did not get6 my money. If I were a betting man, I would never bet on you being a straight bookie.

Actually you sent a check. I was able to parlay that into enough money to take a vacation in the Southwest for the first two full weeks of March.

Sucker.

Hi, Stilly. Not a bad idea to have Beauregard start posting on the forum! If I (and he) get time, I think it would be pretty cool to have a Napoleonic Budgie's input show up here on a regular basis. ;-)

THere's such a fine line between creative imagination and lying about another person, Rapparee. You should study it up. Keep you safe at night, and all that.

I can see how that would fly as a apoken piece, LH. It's brilliant. A far as another deranged, odd personality in this forum, go for it. There's always room for one more.

If there is anyone who can flounce off screen in a fit of pique, leaving a few feathers behind to drift in the air, it would be a bird of your creation, LH.

It's certainly not my place to decide that you are deranged, Rapp. I think Little Hawk understands this.

Oh, I do, I do. ;-)

Stilly, the bird you are referring to may be the Perennially Aggrieved Eastern Plover, popularly known as the Periwinkle. The Periwinkle is almost always offended by prevailing conditions, whatever they may be, and is usually glimpsed departing the area as you say...in a fit of pique, and with its nose in the air. No Periwinkle is never really satisfied nor is it likely to stick around long, because nothing ever meets its unqualified approval. It is a migratory bird.

Well, Rapparee seems anxious to have someone confirm his darkest suspicions about his own derangement; so I will step forward and take one for Mom's team. Your darkest suspicions, sir, are completely, horribly, true.

YES! But don't despair. There may be a part open for you in the Chongo campaign. They can take you around in a steel cage as a traveling exhibit to demonstrate the basic principles and horrendous vices of rank specism combined with mental instability. You will be well paid, and you will have the satisfaction of helping to bring a new age of freedom and equality to the society you love.

Well, that's good. I'm glad Amos told me. Otherwise I would spend a lot of time and worry on whether or not I was deranged. Now my heart and mind are at peace and I can Get On With Life.

Have I mentioned my long, sharp knives lately? They're really sharp and the blades are nice and long. I like my long sharp knives. They're long and sharp and have nice points. They're good knives, long and sharp and with good points. I don't think I've mentioned them lately.

They are good knives, they last a long time, but their methods of selling weren't that great back when I was in college as was approached about selling them. How did you buy them?

A young man came with a recommendation from a friend--typical time-honored sales presentation; but the friend had been so enthusiastic about the knives and the actual knives so good that we were persuaded. As a result we have gotten rid of about twenty miscellaneous knives we had collected over the decades and have a nice orderly knife block and new cutting board pleasantly arrayed in the galley.

BTW if you ever get a chance to see a play called "In the Wake" by Lisa Kron, do not miss it., It is one of the most emotionally honest and deep-reaching things I have ever seen.

I been thinkin' of gettin' a set of really sharp knives and learnin' some top flight knife throwin' skills. I got the idea from watchin' this Chinese Kungfu film. HOO-HAH!!! There was this little Black Belt Chinese gal in the film who could throw knives and little axes faster than a tommy gun spits lead. I was more than impressed. She was in this scene where she is fightin' about 500 completely insane little Chinese guys with axes inside a 2 story clubhouse that belonged to the big gangster kingpin. KREE-GAH!!! You shoulda seen it! There was little crazy Chinese guys gettin' diced up so fast it looked like that scene in Ratatouille where the lady chef Collete is choppin' up the vegetables. Every now and then a fat one would try to kill her too...but they all went down just the same.

CHOPPITY! CHOPPITY CHOP! EEEEE-YAAAAAHGH! CHOP! BANG! ARRGH! SLICE! SHRIEK! AAAAAAYEEEEEE!

Man, I LOVE these Kungfu films! Specially with the female lead.

I just gotta get me a set of them Kungfu throwing knives. And some Nunchucks too. I will practice on the wooden cigar store Gorilla I got standin' in the front office.

You do that. Learn to throw them with your feet as well. And your tail -- don't forget that you can throw them with your tail. Then you and me can have a face-down -- you can throw knives and I'll use a rifle.

Good morning, Mom. Little Hawk has made you Rapparree crepes for breakfast, with home-grown honey and fresh biscuits on the side.

I am running a Word macro to highlight any sentences in a book longer than 45 words, and it is taking forever to complete. Valuable though. You know how I tend to run on sometimes.

The sun has come out, and the SIL and BBW are off to the world-renowned San Diego Zoo. Peace reigns, black coffee and birdsong color the sunlit morning, and life, by Gawd, is good.

Thing I really hate about week-ends is it takes me one and a half days to recover my equanimity and center my soul, and half-a-day later I am back to the sobering and slightly stultifying business of doing others' tasks for money. Not to complain--the money makes many other things possible, all of which I value. I am just sayin', ya know?

Have a delightful sun-rich day, Mater!!

He thinks only as his Controllers allow him to think. He is a spy, a scout, for a coming invasion of Earth by bug-eyed monsters from another planet who (for some reason) want to steal our women, probably because our women are better looking. Chingoo must be neutralized in a way that Earth isn't threatened. Perhaps a lobotomy and an orchiectomy would do it if coupled with sessions of ECT. It's not like he has any use for those parts anyway.

There's Little Hawk and gnu
There's Stilly down in Texas
And Amos out in SoCal.

And Eiseley also pops in
Lots of imaginary folk
From freds to Chongo Chimppunk.

The Tay Bridge Disaster
Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay!
Alas! I am very sorry to say
That ninety lives have been taken away
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

'Twas about seven o'clock at night,
And the wind it blew with all its might,
And the rain came pouring down,
And the dark clouds seem'd to frown,
And the Demon of the air seem'd to say-
"I'll blow down the Bridge of Tay."

When the train left Edinburgh
The passengers' hearts were light and felt no sorrow,
But Boreas blew a terrific gale,
Which made their hearts for to quail,
And many of the passengers with fear did say-
"I hope God will send us safe across the Bridge of Tay."

But when the train came near to Wormit Bay,
Boreas he did loud and angry bray,
And shook the central girders of the Bridge of Tay
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

So the train sped on with all its might,
And Bonnie Dundee soon hove in sight,
And the passengers' hearts felt light,
Thinking they would enjoy themselves on the New Year,
With their friends at home they lov'd most dear,
And wish them all a happy New Year.

So the train mov'd slowly along the Bridge of Tay,
Until it was about midway,
Then the central girders with a crash gave way,
And down went the train and passengers into the Tay!
The Storm Fiend did loudly bray,
Because ninety lives had been taken away,
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

As soon as the catastrophe came to be known
The alarm from mouth to mouth was blown,
And the cry rang out all o'er the town,
Good Heavens! the Tay Bridge is blown down,
And a passenger train from Edinburgh,
Which fill'd all the peoples hearts with sorrow,
And made them for to turn pale,
Because none of the passengers were sav'd to tell the tale
How the disaster happen'd on the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

It must have been an awful sight,
To witness in the dusky moonlight,
While the Storm Fiend did laugh, and angry did bray,
Along the Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay,
Oh! ill-fated Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay,
I must now conclude my lay
By telling the world fearlessly without the least dismay,
That your central girders would not have given way,
At least many sensible men do say,
Had they been supported on each side with buttresses,
At least many sensible men confesses,
For the stronger we our houses do build,
The less chance we have of being killed.

Dreadful Accident on the Tay Bridge
Loss of Passenger Train
Dundee, Sunday Midnight
To-night a heavy gale swept over Dundee and a portion of the Tay bridge was blown down while a train from Edinburgh due at 7.15 was passing. It is believed that the train is in the water, but the gale is still so strong that a steamboat has not yet been able to reach the bridge. The train was duly signalled from Fife as having entered the bridge at 7.14. It was seen running along the rails, and then suddenly was observed a flash of fire. The opinion was that the train left the rails, and went over the bridge. Those who saw the incident repaired immediately to the Tay-bridge station at Dundee and informed the station master of what they had seen. He immediately put himself in communication with the man in charge of the signal-box at the north end of the bridge. The telegraph wires are stretched across the bridge, but when the instrument was tried it was soon seen that the wires were broken.

Mr. Smith, the station-master and Mr. Roberts, locomotive superintendent, determined, notwithstanding the fierce gale, to walk across the bridge as far as possible from the north side, with the view of ascertaining the extent of the disaster. They were able to get out a considerable distance, and the first thing that caught their eye was the water spurting from a pipe which was laid across the bridge for the supply of Newport, a village on the south side, from the Dundee reservoirs. Going a little further, they could distinctly see by the aid of the strong moonlight that there was a large gap in the bridge caused by the fall, so far as they could discern, of two or three of the largest spars. They thought, however, that they observed a red light on the south part of the bridge, and were of the opinion that the train had been brought to a standstill on the driver noticing the accident. This conjecture has, unfortunately, been proved incorrect. At Broughtyferry, four miles from the bridge, several mail bags have come ashore, and there is no doubt that the train is in the river. No precise information as to the number of passengers can be obtained, but it is variously estimated at from 150 to 200.

The Provost and a number of leading citizens of Dundee started at half-past 10 o'clock in a steam-boat for the bridge, the gale being moderated; but they have not yet returned.

Monday, 1.30 A.M.
The scene at the Tay-bridge station to-night is simply appalling. Many thousand persons are congregated around the buildings, and strong men and women are wringing their hands in despair. On the 2d of October 1877, while the bridge was in course of construction, one of the girders was blown down during a gale similar to that of to-day, but the only one of the workmen lost his life. The return of the steamboat is anxiously awaited.

The Times, 29th December 1879

My friend Bryan Sutton (not the famous guitarist but another Bryan Sutton) tells me that the locals in Scotland ever after referred to the locomotive invoved in the disaster as "the diver", showing typical black humour about the matter. It was presently raised from the bottom of the river, cleaned up, and then returned to service, but some people were reluctant to ride on it after that for superstitious reasons.

Well, fer.... Here a real, two-fisted, all-American poem and since it happened on the shores of Lake Erie Canada can claim part of it, too.

Ashtabula Disaster

Air -- "Gently Down the Stream of Time"

Have you heard of the dreadful fate
Of Mr. P. P. Bliss and wife?
Of their death I will relate,
And also others lost their life;
Ashtabula Bridge disaster,
Where so many people died
Without a thought that destruction
Would plunge them 'neath the wheel of tide.

CHORUS:

Swiftly passed the engine's call,
Hastening souls on to death,
Warning not one of them all;
It brought despair right and left.

Among the ruins are many friends,
Crushed to death amidst the roar;
On one thread all may depend,
And hope they've reached the other shore.
P. P. Bliss showed great devotion
To his faithful wife, his pride,
When he saw that she must perish,
He died a martyr by her side.

P. P. Bliss went home above --
Left all friends, earth and fame,
To rest in God's holy love;
Left on earth his work and name.
The people love his work by numbers,
It is read by great and small,
He by it will be remembered,
He has left it for us all.

His good name from time to time
Will rise on land and sea;
It is known in distant climes,
Let it echo wide and free.
One good man among the number,
Found sweet rest in a short time,
His weary soul may sweetly slumber
Within the vale, heaven sublime.

Destruction lay on every side,
Confusion, fire and despair;
No help, no hope, so they died,
Two hundred people over there.
Many ties was there broken,
Many a heart was filled with pain,
Each one left a little token,
For above they live again.

--Julia A Moore
