Ah, but even if halved, or further, tis a wit and intellect revered. Thus I witness and acknowledge.

Me? His cigarette butts are still in the ashtray on my coffee table from last August. I feel small in this comic discussion of what some say really matters to matters.

Neither is "Tristam Shandy," Amos. I thought for certain that you would recognize both! Now my appreciation of your immense and god-like intellect is halved.

Doesth thou throw in tyops as a ruse? I certainly do not. My typos are simply feeble mindedness. Unless I do it on purpose. Here is how you can tell... >;-)

A sharp and telling image, BB! I love the phrase "boneless with fright".

Rapparree, you really must consider being intelligible once in a whiole. It would do you a world of good. Finnegan's Wake is notMOAB, as we all know.

Sonnet 07/05/02           Bhean Sidhe                 DCLXXXVIII

It was an odd noise that I heard, this night:
Not quite a scream, but far more than a gasp,
From moonless darkness, with no stars in sight.
What is this coldness, that my insides clasp?
Why do I weaken, hearing sound so far
Only the echo reaches ear, yet mind
Is twisted from intent? How can I bar
Gates of imagination, to wyrd bind?
I fall, boneless with fright, and sweat breaks out;
Bowels turn to water with despair. I weep,
To lose all. I moan, but cannot give shout
To more than whimper, nor my reason keep.
She passes, and I live! Yet dare not rise
For fear of seeing Death within her eyes.

"Well, you may take my word, that nine parts in ten of a man's sense or his nonsense, his successes and miscarriages in this world depend upon their motions and activity, and the different tracks and trains you put them into, so that when they are once set a-going, whether right or wrong, 'tis not a half-penny matter,--away they go cluttering like hey-go mad; and by treading the same steps over and over again, they presently make a road of it, as plain and as smooth as a garden-walk, which, when they are once used to, the Devil himself sometimes shall not be able to drive them off it."

Aside from the Austinese aspect of it, you expose, not to say, espouse, a great truth there.

Gene, Gene
Built a machine
Art, Art
Let a fart
And blew the machine
All apart

Now... that THERE is great literature.

It's been done. Here's a sample:

Sir Tristram, violer d'amores, fr'over the short sea, had passen-core rearrived from North Armorica on this side the scraggy isthmus of Europe Minor to wielderfight his penisolate war: nor had topsawyer's rocks by the stream Oconee exaggerated themselse to Laurens County's gorgios while they went doublin their mumper all the time: nor avoice from afire bellowsed mishe mishe to tauftauf thuartpeatrick not yet, though venissoon after, had a kidscad buttended a bland old isaac: not yet, though all's fair in vanessy, were sosie sesthers wroth with twone nathandjoe. Rot a peck of pa's malt had Jhem or Shen brewed by arclight and rory end to the regginbrow was to be seen ringsome on the aquaface.

The fall (bababadalgharaghtakamminarronnkonnbronntonner-ronntuonnthunntrovarrhounawnskawntoohoohoordenenthur — nuk!) of a once wallstrait oldparr is retaled early in bed and later on life down through all christian minstrelsy. The great fall of the offwall entailed at such short notice the pftjschute of Finnegan, erse solid man, that the humptyhillhead of humself prumptly sends an unquiring one well to the west in quest of his tumptytumtoes: and their upturnpikepointandplace is at the knock out in the park where oranges have been laid to rust upon the green since dev-linsfirst loved livvy.

And here's another:

I wish either my father or my mother, or indeed both of them, as they were in duty both equally bound to it, had minded what they were about when they begot me; had they duly consider'd how much depended upon what they were then doing;--that not only the production of a rational Being was concerned in it, but that possibly the happy formation and temperature of his body, perhaps his genius and the very cast of his mind;--and, for aught they knew to the contrary, even the fortunes of his whole house might take their turn from the humours and dispositions which were then uppermost;--Had they duly weighed and considered all this, and proceeded accordingly,--I am verily persuaded I should have made a quite different figure in the world, from that in which the reader is likely to see me.--Believe me, good folks, this is not so inconsiderable a thing as many of you may think it;--you have all, I dare say, heard of the animal spirits, as how they are transfused from father to son, &c. &c.--and a great deal to that purpose:--Well, you may take my word, that nine parts in ten of a man's sense or his nonsense, his successes and miscarriages in this world depend upon their motions and activity, and the different tracks and trains you put them into, so that when they are once set a-going, whether right or wrong, 'tis not a half-penny matter,--away they go cluttering like hey-go mad; and by treading the same steps over and over again, they presently make a road of it, as plain and as smooth as a garden-walk, which, when they are once used to, the Devil himself sometimes shall not be able to drive them off it.

Both books are considered Great Literature, of course.

I've alway's been big on apostrophe's and use them when e'er I can, e'en if one is uncall'd for. My brother's and I were known far 'n' wide as Mike 'n' Tony 'n' Ted (alternately, "Them Three Troublemaker's").

Why is it that only one apostrophe is used in these constructions, when clearly two letters are omitted. It should be Mut 'n' Jeff, etc.

"N" is more useful in popular culture as the intersection between Mac 'n cheese, pork 'n beans, etc. Mutt 'n Jeff.

"N" is a mystic sign of the Idaho Legion. The meaning is deep and inscrutable to the uninitiated, but you may assume that it means "North."

However writ, it's a long, ponderous, dangerous coast with wild surfline and wind-carved sculptured rocks, water=carved intricacies of driftwood piled on the sandslopes, and an endless wind down from Kamchatka and over from the Trobriands.

But you can see why the deep forest has had such a lasting impression upon the human psyche. And as for the surf -- those people were skilled with their boats.

APologies for the typo. They call it "Clay-Lock" so there's no telling how ti was orignally spelled. What is really impressive about it is that the pre-Columbian natives named it "safe place to land", when in fact the surf zone all along that coast except for the stream deltas is ferocious and would require really skilled, tireless boatsmanship to land a boat through, especially a log canoe.

Thanks for the map, Stilly--I am still haunted by those images of the deep primeval woods.

Oh, fer...Amos, I said "Standard Temperature and Pressure" (abbreviated "STP"). That is, the NIST standard of a temperature of 20°C (293.15 K, 68°F)and an absolute pressure of 101.325 kPa (14.696 psi, 1 atm). You've got the data you need and this is NOT an "open book" test.

Yes, the Olympic Peninsula could be called "waaaaaaaay cool." We even spent a couple of days in Neah.

I have returned from sailing a day on Lake union; from meandering up the long wooded trail tot he Falls of Crescent Lake; from pounding the high steps to the Big Cedar; from ambling the tide-pools on Beach Four north of Klahalock; from dancing with the Fenton Troll and dowsing in the hot springs of Sol Duc; from pondering the snow-capped Olympics from the heights of Hurricane Ridge and from the mossy depths of the Hoh Rain Forest where the barred owl rules. I have smelled the sweat of the glass-blowers and heard the joys of the folksingers at the FolkLife festival, murmured over old Martins at Dusty Springs and meditated on the wild salmon facing their tribulations as they pass the locks. I have climbed the Needle of Space and walked the shadows of the Pike Market underground, and mastered the torment of the Seattle West bridge and the 99 south. All this and more have I done this week hence.

And I alone have come to Mom to tell thee.

If a projectile has an initial velocity of 2000 mps and mass of 100 grams at an angle of 62 degrees, and assuming standard temperature and pressure along the entire trajectory, how far must the projectile travel for its mass to be reduced by 7 grams if the projectile is composed of a) bronze, b) iron, and c) yttrium? Please show your work and do not copy from your neighbor, who is probably wrong. You may assume 1.3 gravities.

Stand is cool. Fall down dead? Not so much.

Let Bacchus' sons be not dismayed
But join with me, each jovial blade
Come, drink and sing and lend your aid
To help me with the chorus:

cho: Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale
And pay the reckoning on the nail;
No man for debt shall go to jail
From Garryowen in glory.

We'll beat the bailiffs out of fun,
We'll make the mayor and sheriffs run
We are the boys no man dares dun
If he regards a whole skin.

Our hearts so stout have got no fame
For soon 'tis known from whence we came
Where'er we go they fear the name
Of Garryowen in glory.

And then.. yer fucked.
