That was clever, allright, gnu. My Dad was such a workaholic that he wasn't around much to hear me play my guitar. He was busy trying to become the next Henry Ford or J.P. Morgan or Du Pont or something along that line...an objective he never managed to obtain, despite the most heroic efforts.

Meanwhile, I was intent on becoming an idealistic folksinger (a la Joan Baez, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Bob Dylan) and a radical socialist in support of revolutionary causes. We agreed on virtually nothing whatsoever...for the rest of our lives...and it was sheer bloody hell most of the way.

Yeah... well, my old man was a crafty SOB! He bought me a Kent electric guitar. NO AMP! He taught me how to play. When I practiced, I REALLY had to listen to myself and he never had to cringe at my mistakes because he couldn't hear them because an electric guitar without an amp sounds like

Of course, I eventually was Enlightened and learned to play The Trumpet, the very instrument of (the) God(s). Now with my trumpet by my side I have achieved satori, nirvana, and dwell in both Fólkvangr and Valhalla. But I usually sit with the Gjallarhorn at my side in my house Himinbjörg, where the Bifrost Bridge meets Heaven.

Careful now . . . this is bleeding over into some serious music discussion. Don't want to shock the folks upstairs by moving this thread above the line!

I am not impressed by your grandiose tales of playing the Sears & Roebuck guitar, Rap. I started out on a perfect little bastard of an instrument that my uninformed parents bought for me at some small town music store that specialized in ripping off its customers by selling them worthless junk. I don't remember what the brand name of the cursed thing was, but I do remember other details. It was small. It had a black pickguard. The action was so high off the neck that you had to have the grip of an eagle just to press the strings down and get a single note to sound. The intonation was WAY off, so it was impossible to tune the damn thing so that any chord sounded right. The tuning heads tended to slip, so it was always going flat. It had a tonal quality best described as the sound of "a horseball hitting the bottom of a bamboo bucket".

To play that guitar was to SUFFER! I ended up not playing it much, because it was hopeless. When I later discovered what a decent quality guitar is like, it was like a revelation.

I suspect my father bought that first guitar for me for one simple reason: it was extremely cheap! I hope he gets to play it in Heaven.

Plays a Martin Dreadnought
Sings and talks and jokes
Dylan, Baez, Seeger,
Paxton, Jessup, Ochs,
Chords he knows but three but that will hold him for a while,
He's playing there on You Tube
Puttin' on the style.

All your talk about Martins and Gibsons and Avalons -- I learned on a genuine Sears and Roebuck 1955 Special! Nylon strings that you had to re-tune ever 15 seconds! A neck that needed a C-clamp to keep it attached to the body!

By God, we learned to play back in those days! Not like your wimpy D-38s and C-4s and P51s or whatever they are. We were REAL guitar players! I could outplay anybody in my fourth grade class, by cracky! Wussies!

Great! ;-D Amos could teach me a whole lot about Blues guitar...I've never been much good at that guitar style. And his vocal is right on the mark. He appears to be playing a Martin D-28...or D-35? It's pretty similar to the HD-28 I've been playing since 2005.

Lately, though, I've been playing the Avalon guitar I bought from Lynn Miles instead, and the Martin's been getting neglected. I love the smaller body on the Avalon, and the Martin dreadnought just feels too big now.

Wow, Amos! I just watched your "Cowboys are secretly, frequently, etc.." performance on Youtube. Superb!!! You have the trailworn grandeur, humor, and authority of Ian Tyson, not to mention the resonant and convincing voice. Ye gollies! I could swear I was watching the reincarnated spirit of Augustus McCrae, returned to serenade us all.

It's funny how the guy on your right looks so dead serious all through the song. He only cracked a smile once.

I am truly impressed. Damn shame you don't live closer to South Ontario, cos we could use you at the local song circles.

Normal, sure, but for what? Normal narcissism is very different from normal paranoia. And you do me a grave injustice with your "fat man on a motorbike" scam, Rapp. Narcissist or not, lying does not change reality.

A recent video clip will satisfy you, I am sure, how grievously wrong you have been, and cause you to crumble in shattered smithereens of self-hatred. It would only be right. And one thing we know about the Normal Few is they dearly love being right. It's what keep[s them normal.

I think I start a school to teach normalcy. I'll call it a "Normal School" and make lots of money at it. If you ever manage to pay off your tuition and fees you'll get a genuine certificate stating that you are normal (within the school-defined curve of normal distribution).

As for my absence earlier today, I am in a motel in Jackson, WY, having undergone a series of cognition and brain function tests sponsored by the VA.

Know what they found out?

I have normal cognition and brain function. Normal. Normal. NORMAL. NORMAL!!!!

No "ab" and no "near", but normal.

Looks like I'm talking to myself today. I hope Rap isn't laid up with a hernia after moving all of that furniture around the house. And it looks like winter isn't finished with some of our northern friends. Stay warm and dry - and use a dog whistle to bring Gluon running if you want to transform matter to entertain yourselves. Think about transforming the snow bank outside your house into a bubbling hotspring. Don't forget a robe and flipflops to walk across the snowy yard to the pool.

MOM, languishing at the bottom of the page is not an elegant beginning to the day. Take my hand and lets move back up where there's a better view.

Looks like Moonglow's brother is going to take a Spring Break vacation with Tucson friends this year, not fly home to see his Tejas buddies. The focus is shifting westward, to California. There are lots of reasons to head there - beaches, friends whose families are from there, Silicon Valley and other hot-beds of tech activity. Phone numbers for uncles and aunts in El Cajon and Cerritos will be sent to the tall sprout (yeah, like a 21-year-old is going to go on spring break to visit his parents' sibs).

You guys must be sleeping in today. Is it a cold morning? You're not sticking your noses out from under the covers? Then you'll love this news - next week you need to get up an hour earlier. Yup. It's time for torture - the idiot move to daylight savings time. MOM usually sacrifices an alarm clock every spring by throwing one out the window when that racket starts an hour early on Monday morning after the change.

When my FIL was stationed in Wales back in '43 he ran his bike into a stone wall and fractured his forehead. The review board found that it was an accident and no alcohol was involved -- mind you, the best man at his wedding was the chair of the review board.

He's still after me ta let him record one a my all time best songs... "Been Kinda Lonely In Tha Saddle Since Ma Horse Died". I told Will... Now, if I wouldn't let Johnny do it with Chet on geetar, what makes ya think I'll give you a thumb up yer sorry arse on it? Gee... like he needs the money er what, eh? No, we have to rearrange furniture and we did take some hard maple dressers to St. Vinnie's. The "Matthew Brady Chair" -- so called because some studio photos taken by Matt have an identical chair in them -- came through in beautiful shape. So did 'most everything else.
