It's terrible here as I enjoy the weather Amos wishes he had.

Well, gnu, our birds and bees and buds just got an atmospheric sandblasting overnight, setting back all plans of reproduction back a couple of weeks until damaged limbs heal themselves, nests are rebuilt, and gardens replanted or the broken plants recover. We're limping toward spring with hail in our shoes this morning. Hours later there are still now-quarter-sized pellets lying unmelted on the ground.

I am certain that Amos could defend himself from A Fate Worse Than Death. If naught else his Good Dog would throw herself into the fray and defend his honor or honour.

My goodness, Amos! What vainglorious boasting. Do you really imagine that a middle class gent such as you could seduce la Rutledge that easily? You are getting carried away with yourself, my good man. Now, Olive Whatnoll....I'm sure she'd be giving you the glad eye, probably show a little leg, maybe put you in a hammerlock if you hesitated and say with a leer, "NOW it's YOUR lucky day, boyo!" as she dragged you off screaming toward the nearest couch, bed, or other horizontal surface. Those 'Ull working class women just carn't be trusted wif any blighter wot still can stand and breathe!

Saw my first robin today. Probably been robins before this but I don't get out much since I heard the surgeon say, "We may need a suture." Also today, I heard Blue Jays singing that distinct spring song. Since I can't replicate that song herein, I will interpret it for humans (English version). It goes, "Wanna fuck? Wanna fuck?"

Certainly, Madame. As for Penelope, she'd be pulling off her drawers within the first thirty minutes, so it's just as well you don't send her over.

Chongo is too busy right now to be arranging meetings with Amos, and Penelope probably just couldn't be bothered.

Nevertheless, I think you should have your friends call upon him and arrange a meeting. Pistols or swords, but I think swords would be be best as neither of you should attempt machinery at your ages.

I make no apologies; his perpetual condescension is both facile, jejune, and groundless. Let him take responsibility for a country where free individuals must form and voice their opinions. He will find it quite beyond his ability to fathom.   'Nuff said.

I am not in the least ruffled by your squawks of muffled protest, Amos, just glad I am not trapped within the rusty, decaying bars of your great, insane political gulag down there. Though I am, of course, living in one of its nearer colonies, so to speak...out here in the uber-imperial realm of expanded corporate/bankster takeovers that extends to most of the nations of the world at this point. Your elections are an empty show, though I do note that your citizens are getting quite restless, and may yet storm the bastille of conventional power and overturn the apple cart.

Valueless? Suppose the 2008 version had never gone on, do you think the change in our composite values would have happened anyway--the deficit reduction, the expansion of healthcare, and so on and so on? Valueless my left foot, sir. And as an alien, it is not your business to evaluate the internal processes of another nation of free (relatively) people.

Amos, any number of things can happen in such a case, but the smart thing to do is just wait, and in time the imaginary character will return. They enjoy the attention.

Rapp: I have read it twice, long ago. The notion of mathematical forms existing a priori and accounting for alternative universes (such as those Heinlein depicted) is appealing. The question of variable solidity is, I suppose, just a question of willpower, huh? This also explains the Big Lie syndrome.

Amos, have you read "The Number of the Beast" by the late Robert A. Heinlein? As the novel develops so does the answer to your question, and it is completely answered in the last chapter.

There is a fairly non-technical explanation here.

(A note to those who read the last chapter only: To understand this one you really should read the entire book.)

You have evaded the answer to my question. While it is to some degree comforting to be assured by LH that Chongo has not escaped, the question remains unanswered: what happens when an imaginary character escapes?

It is not yet 12 hours since the last post, but there MOM is, perched at the bottom rung again.

A huge mea culpa this evening - I got home late after a meeting and realized the cover had been in place over the dog door all day. I can't remember when I put it there - and there were puddles and a pile in the house. Poor pups! I apologized profusely, especially after finding the poop first, and Cinnamon groveled, fessing up to the deed. And then I noticed the blocked door! My poor puppies.

What happens when an imaginary friend escapes?   Does it head for the conceptual underbrush, the thickets of half-finished thoughts and wild-root impulses, hoping to evade recapture?

Or does it evaporate into a thin mist of potential thought the minute it hits sunlight?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Have you been making yourself useful in Hawaii, Rap? Catching any frogs or other invasive species? Now might be a great time to develop a taste for frog's legs (tiny, but tasty, eh?)

Yes indeed, Amos! I meant to give Chinga her due, for it was she that gave the movie a depth of meaning rarely, if ever, achieved. The climactic scene where Chinga saves Bogart from...well, I shiver to think of it. Possibly the greatest movie ever made, bar none.

Regarding the alleged chant by the sea, Rap, I don't think Shane is even capable of managing to pronounce any of those words. His linguistic skills are not all that advanced, you know.

Chongo? Yeah, Chongo could probably manage it. He's considerably more cultured than Shane. But would he? How does Cthulhu jibe with a worldview that is based on old Humphrey Bogart films? Not too well....

Well, those kind of ceremonials are a way of formalizing on the outside the various feelings that people are attempting to process on the inside when they have lost a friend or relative. If handled properly, I should think they could be quite helpful to some people no matter what religious tradition or form they are taking place in. It's all a question of who is conducting those ceremonials and how much sensitivity they bring to the process.

I've attended Christian funerals, Wiccan funerals, North American traditional Native funerals, and Hindu funerals. They all served basically the same purpose, though the formalities differed. In most cases, I'd say they had a useful effect for many of those who were there. It's a way of showing respect and memorializing someone you've known. You don't have to be "religious" to want to do that.

Calls to the great Goat Beast by a chimp? Jaysus.

Last night I went to a funeral, Mom. A Catholic funeral, and I can only hope mine gets as well-attended. Seriously there were five generations of Italian-descent, plus scores of other sorts drifting around, a huge spread of the best Italian foods, followed by a very long service, led by a man in a white hat and robe thing.

God only knows I am not a loyal Christian, but I can see how comforting and strengthening it might be to roll with a tribe like that, using well=oiled rituals and detailed imagery that others can't see to sort of weld the many into a one. While it is not my path, it is certainly interesting.

Anyway, the dog was very happy to see us when we finally got home.

Truly, I should not do this, but decency prompts me.

A very trustworthy source states that Chongx and Shame were seen and videotaped by a surveillance camera standing on the beach at the old Massachusetts seaport of Innsmouth, chanting "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn" over and over. An agency of the US government is said to have responded to this information with, "Oh, not again! I thought we'd cleaned that up for good in the 1920s!"

I will leave it to others to determine, as I have, the meaning of this information.
