Amos, we have had a lot of fun with Babelfish, though. It's a wonderful toy! I love the way it can take the meaning further from what was intended as you move from one language to another and circle back to the original.

Amos, we have had the much recreation with Babelfish, though. It is a giocattolo wonderful! I appreciate the way that can more more make examination meaning than that that has been expected and moves of a language for the other and in circles behind for it originates it them.

Rapaire....loook, man....we all know about Babelfish. It's not secret or leading edge or superior knowledge or special priveleged information. It went from "wired" to "tired" about 36 months ago, man. Do try to keep up.

To the brick scheissehausen
'Neath the linden tree
Away, away, come away with me,
And I will show you the blitzenscheisse.

"Dunderhead" is a great word. It's even better than "chucklehead". I really think it must derive from rum drinking.

Definitions of dunderhead on the Web:

dunce: these words are used to express a low opinion of someone's intelligence

wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

The Dictionary of Americanisms offers: "DUNDERHEAD. Blockhead; dolt. The same as the English provincialisms dunder-knoll and dummer-head."

The American Heritage concurs in the possibility of the term deriving from doner, thunder, in Middle Dutch.

Odd. Babel Fish just translated "dunder" (from German to English) as "more dunder."

Why can't there be Neo-norse mythology? All the hairy little gods know I've seen enough warped and twisted Irish/celtoid, egyptian, greek and roman stuff out there.

I particularly liked reading the story of Morrigan and Osiris. It went into a lot of detail about the threefold aspect of Morrigan/Diana/Freya.

'struth!

Rap: I am assuming nothing, good sir. ;-) I looked it up. You are the one who is assuming.

It means thunder in German too, as far as I know.

I think that the English term dunderhead might relate to thunder inside the skull...or it might more likely relate to drunkenness...since dunder is a byproduct of making rum. Yes, very likely it was drunken sailors staggering about and acting like fools who provided the inspiration for the first use of the term "dunderhead".

You really should read the link about the ship. It was quite impressive.

, it's a derivative meaning, based on the notion that some folks, naming no names, are so taken with the noises generated within their skulls that they lose perspective; they became known as "dunderheads", and by extension over time the word came to mean "fumbling or stupid". That's my story, and I am sticking to it.

As for my contributions to the history of Norse mythology, you are much too kind.

Sufferin' JAYSUS, Amos! You have set Norse mythology back ten thousand years with your bizarre ramblings.... ;-)

Now, listen carefully....this is the English definition of the word "dunder":

Dun´der
n. 1. The lees or dregs of cane juice, used in the distillation of rum.
The use of dunder in the making of rum answers the purpose of yeast in the fermentation of flour.
- B. Edwards.

Further to that, the word "dunder" in the Swedish language means "thunder", as in "dunderberg" (thunder mountain).

Here is a link to an article about the American ironclad "Dunderberg", launched in 1865. They did not name it so to indicate that it was stupid, Amos, they named it so to indicate that it was impressively large and that its guns thundered.

USS Dunderberg, ironclad, 1865

Dunner, of course, means "thin", while "Dunder" means dull or clumsy. It is a very different thing to say "Der LeedleHawk dunder ist" than to say "Der Leddlehawk dunner ist", as I am sure you will appreciate.

That "Dunnerhund" was actually a corruption of the word "Dunderhund" (see Philli and Mares, 1972, et al.) and is related to the term "dunderhead".

Some archeologists believe that the stone paintings of Kokipelli which are often associated with what many believe to be lighning bolts are actually being misread. The "lightning" these forward thinkers believe, is actually a representation of stairsteps - and "kokipelli" (usually portrayed with a huge erection) is a corruption of "caught on belly" - obviosuly a euphimism.

I believe there is a germane body of mythological referent in the Norse tradition, which raises interesting issues of common ancestorhood. The Scandinavian legends speak of Langer Dünnerhund who is variously presented as a half-man half-god, or as a full-god who occasionally shows up in man's form, typically surprising poor families by sitting down at their dinner tables unexpectedly.

One of the stories about this mythic figure involves his falling in love with a mortal maiden of great beauty, as beautiful as any sunrise, and coming down the golden stairs from Asgard to capture her from her poor family and abscond with her to a big party in Valhalla. Her beauty was so overpowering, however, that Langer Dünnerhund began to experience enormous priapism while seeking to make good his escape up the golden staircase back to Asgard. This affectation so encumbered his progress that the damsel was able to wrest herself free from his grip and escape back to her parent's lowly hut on the farm (a decision she regretted for the rest of her life).

Palaquin didn't make it as a gunfighter - so he hired himself out as a beast of burden.

Hmmmmm, Wasn't Longdoggi the Mayan god of the ball game pitz - derived from the Olmec precursor and very similar to the Aztec ullamaliztli or Nahuatl Ulama?

Sacrifices to Longdoggi I believe were typically sausages made of various unidentifiable meat products and lots of beer. A strange ritual food known as kraakirdjachkz was also consumed in prodigious quantities in honour of Longdoggi

...total and absolute hegemony over all that he surveys, and most especially over anything that he has peed upon.

No, the poor fellow doesn't get erections at all, Amos. He was gelded, you see, some time prior to being in this family.

His main passion in life is food. It's a simple passion, but one that never fails to give him motivation.

My main passion these days seems to be talking on this forum, and doing various stuff relating to model aircraft...neither of which causes me any arousal of the specific type you were referring to...

They don't like being gelded that much for some reason...

Look, a god doesn't HAVE to walk up the stairs! Specially not on one of those steep Mayan or Aztec pyramids. Perish the thought. A dog that is a god gets CARRIED up the stairs on a palanquin by his adoring devotees. He rests serenely at the top, indicating by the twitch of an ear or an eyebrow who shall be sacrificed next. He yawns prodigiously, stretches, and watches approvingly as the unworthy die hideously and their heads and headless torsos are thrown down the stairs to the cheering mob below...

At least that's the way my dog imagines it.

Seems to me from a god point of view the erection is the primary obstruction. Maybe you should have him shaved, gelded and THEN gilded...but omit step two for your own head, as it might have dire consequences.

I've been growing my hair longer also, but it's on my neck and driving me nuts, so I'm going back to a look a couple of inches shorter. My hairdresser died six weeks ago and we were working on a new style. Now that his vision is gone (and I found someone who used to work with him, but she's less experienced) I'll go back to an earlier look I liked.

No dachshunds were harmed in my haircut, however.

Try rearraning you hair and giving your dachshund a haircut. You may have someone else rearrange your hair, but you have to shave your dachshund yourself.

"Shave your dachshund" sounds both vaguely threatening and smacking of strange sexual proclivities.
