I never claimed, sir, to be First Letter. I am merely the first Vowel, and as to that you may ask any schoolchild in the English-speaking world.

Kha, on the other hand, is a very late consonant, thoroughly below the salt.

A

Whether or not A is the first vowel depends upon your alphabet. In Khmer the first letter is ka (the a with a bar over it) and is pronounced "ka". In Kannada it's "k", as it is in Malayalam. Of course, alphabets are usually arranged in our eurocentric way. You might look at classic Mayan or Linear A for other examples of alphabets that do not have "a" as the first letter.

Played at the Parkway Bar last night, an adequate performance, with a gang of wonderful friends and fellow musicians.

Hi, Mom! Love ya!

A
First Vowel.

It's Friday, perhaps topic suggestions will perk up. I plan to get out in the garden and trim the grass from under all of the happy tomato plants that are again producing. The grass is hiding much of the fruit. Time to start making green tomato relish.

Poor Mom -- left alone with clerical child abuse, Ebola, and water that doesn't fall from the sky.

Carole has big burly guards and bigger dogs. The dogs eat Irish Wolfhounds AND the wolves as a light luncheon repast. I don't know what the guards eat, but I've heard that they chew railroad spikes like candy -- vertically in the mouths.

The town was named for a thermos bottle because of what they call the thermos bottle miracle. As one docent explained it to me:

"You put something hot in a thermos bottle, and the bottle keeps it hot."

"Yes, that's for sure," I agreed.

"But if you put something cold in a thermos bottle, the thermos bottle keeps it COLD!", she continued, wide-eyed.

"Yes, yes. But what is your point?"

"Well,: she said proudly, "How does it know???"

Stanley is also named for a brand of thermos bottle. Nice place -- all log cabins.

"Fur trappers of the Hudson's Bay Company discovered the Stanley Basin in the 1820s, but it was mostly avoided due to scarcity of beaver."

I can understand that.

Actually, I favor moving the capital to the population center of the State, or as close as possible.

That would be Stanley. Stanley is also the closest town to Carole King's place...don't even TRY to visit her.

THere's a chance of catastrophic environmental system failure tomorrow, especially between 10 and 12 PST.

Will advise.

It's going to be dark tonight, after a sunny day with possible clouds. But the sun will be up there, if it comes up. There might be some rain -- there's a 50-50 chance. The high will be some temperature and so will the low. There's also a 50-50 chance of a blizzard for the rest of the week, and there's also a 50-50 chance of a tsunami washing Boise away.

No body ever lets him see anything cool. Poor chap, up there in the cold and ice and never anything cool (except snow and ice) to see. Even when he runs to the outhouse he only sees snow and ice because he has to run through a tunnel to get there. Sometimes the tunnel caves in and so does he.

The even better part of that story, gnu, is that yesterday my niece and her boyfriend announced that they are engaged! Lucy the Wonderdog may well have a role in the nuptials. My family are dog people. :)

Up a long ladder, down a short rope
Here's to King Bill, and to hell wid da Pope.

Anyway, I wish to cavort. Today I cavorted over to the Old Open Mic and played with many friends old and new on stringed instruments and vocals, which was a grand pleasure indeed. I actually performed a rendition of "You've Got To Serve Somebody" which had them clapping and stomping in the aisles. Hahha.

MOM, the dogs are in for the night. They want to know how Maggie the Wonder dog is because they like good dog stories. Like the one my niece told to her father, my brother. She and her boyfriend moved to Minnesota last summer, from sunny southern CA. They fit in well, and even added to the family, adopting a charming mixed breed (who looks like she should be her own breed, and probably has a lot of Australian shepherd and maybe some English pointer) pup named Lucy. They take now-one-year-old Lucy to dog parks regularly, and they visited a new park a few weeks ago. They saw Lucy paying particular attention to another dog, sniffing, playing, leaving but always going back to hang out with him. And he had her coloring. They spoke to the owner, a 13-year-old girl, and realized these two were litter mates! Of course she recognized him. They were adopted from the same shelter in the big city, and had information about age and birthday to compare and confirm.

They plan to go back to see if they get lucky and let the dogs play together again.

I have been asked to run (behind closed doors and by few). I declined in a heartbeat. I don't run any more than I ever did. I research for those that run but I do not run. Political office does not suit me. Imagine my first day in the legislature... "Mister/Madame Speaker... not a fuckin hope I am takin off me hat. Take yer antiquated bullshit decorum dress rules and shove em up yer arse. Now, let's talk about corruption in the legislature." Ya see where I am comin from? Just ain't gonna happen. The phrase "Loose Canuck." comes to mind. Simply a train wreck waiting to happen.

Four years from now? We'll see... if I am still alive.

Don't weep, Ebbie. Mom doesn't like it when people weep. It depresses her and makes everything wet. gnu doesn't need wet. It will dilute his (shudder!) Budweiser.

An old limerick:

There was a young lady, Ann Heiser,
Who said that no man could surprise her.
But a fellow named Blatz
Found a Schiltz in her pants,
And now she is sadder Budweiser.

On a mug I saw "How Long does it take to get thin?"

And I realized the correct answer is:

"As long as it took to get fat".

When asked why old folks drive slowly, I reply "Because we can." However, when one has to go to several shops and sees what I saw on the radar, old folks can drive just as fast as those with fancy weehicles and little skill. Plus, it helps if you have a big hulkin pickup truck... makes the Tonka Toys leery. Just sat me arse in the chair and Dog raised his big leg in the sky. Add a 40kph wind and she's wet as whale shit out there. Duck and worm weather.

In here where me arse is sat, it's dry and snuggly. Snagged some McCain's frozen pizza on sale for $4 per and I had $1 off coupons. Imagine my delight when I saw the Bud on sale! I even traded a five dollar bill for a looto ticket worth $10M. Great day so far eh?

I hope youse and yours are living the dream too.

P.S. That there Room 101 thread? Cranky old men.

Okay, so nobody disagrees. My theory has been peer-reviewed (as if anyone anywhere could could up to my standards of peerage!).

My only decisions left to make is first, in which learned journal to publish and, second, what to say in my speech accepting the Nobel prizes I'm sure to win. (I was taught the best way to handle great flame in grade school in the '50s. "Duck and cover" handles most situations.)

I have A Theory.

Global warming is proven, except for those who prefer to live in caves and scratch their fleas.

Hot air rises. Cold air "sinks." Clouds trap heat.

As the climate warms, hot air will rise but will be trapped by the clouds. This will force the cold air at the tops of mountains to sink into the valleys. Thus, as the mountaintops melt the valleys will freeze. Eventually the melted mountaintops will fill in the valleys and the Earth will be a flat, featureless plain. Then the weather will be flat and featureless as well...bland, no bite to it. Thus, the world ends not with a bang, but a whimper (to quote some poet).

Oh, yeah. Thomas Stearns Eliot. Ol' TS himself. One of Saint Louie's progeny.

Some the world will look like a patient etherized upon a table, to cite ol' TS again.

That's my theory, anyway.

Powder can be difficult to get around here I hear. However, Cabellas and Bass Pro are coming to town so reloaders shouldn't have a problem. Yesterday, I went to see the Cabellas building under construction about 2 km from me. BIG store! Gonna put the local shops and smiths out of business. They'll take a fair bit of business away from Crappy Tire too. Damn Yankees!

I am primed. Well, reasonably well oiled. Time for a semi pain free walk. I tidied Mum's garage and got some other stuff done but I had to lift some heavy items so I will be toast for several days after my prime time has timed out. Gotta get a walk in now because walking will be rather difficult as toast. Sooo... if anyone needs to get in contact with me, leave a message after the beep. If it's an emergency, dial 911 and scream "HELP M..." and then drop the phone.
