I was into Rolfing, myself, but then I took up Primal Screaming when I became a library director. Now I'm into Sleep Therapy and deep introspection.

He is not my projection, Amos, he is one of my many creations. There is a difference, you know, between a projection and a creation. If you had not succumbed years ago to the artifices of psuedo-intellectual Southern California psychobabble, you would know exactly what I mean. ;-)

Enough of this casting of idiocy! I confess that I did not give Eiseley's son an AK-74.

I gave him an RPG-16. It's just more, I dunno, Idaho.

You can look further than Shane for idiocy. Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Dubya, the examples are ample (and mostly GOP. . . )

How could you say that, LH? I mean, when he is your own projection?

Shane is living proof that there is no limit to idiocy.

To idiocy. I give them the benefit of a doubt, feeble though that benefit was at the time and is now.

I don't get why you redacted the word "idiots". Is there no limit?

The bullets vary, from copper-jacketed lead to tracer to a "penetrator" round with a tungsten rod centered in a steel core and capped with lead.

I was shooting black powder at a public range in Indiana once and two fellas were on the 100 yard range shooting a) a crew-served WW2 German heavy MG32, tripod mounted, belt fed, machine gun and, b) an AK-47 on full auto doing an "assault walk."

Now I've always felt that crew-served weapons or anything that fires full-auto isn't just for hunting anymore, but I minded my own business. Eventually the idiots other shooters packed it in. About that time a man came up to me with a spent 7.92mm bullet in his hand and asked if this was something I had fired. No, I replied, I'm shooting .50 caliber round ball from a muzzle loader and I'd talk to those guys over there on the 100 yard range.

I don't know if he did or not, but a few minutes later the State Police came around. I was packing up and demonstrated to the cops that I didn't do it -- it's easy to demonstrate your innocence when you're shooting something from the mid-19th Century and the bullet is obviously Not From Then. By then the others had left, but I suppose the police got their names from the range sign-in sheet. I hope they did, anyway.

I've always thought too that if you want to fire machine guns you should join the military. They can better afford the ammunition.

Got me to wonderin what the weights are of the bullet and powder after I read that the muzle velocity is 900 mps. Tried a few sites, no go. Not that it matters... just curious. A throwback from my days growin up with them gun-totin heroes on yer TV.

Plus, I grew up in a military family with a dad that was a Small Arms expert. (A 38 Parachuten on full auto will bring game wardens from a ways off in Ontario. Good story. Especcially when Dad told them that he and the lads heard the machine pistol from "that way" and pointed up the road from whence the wardens had come.)

The AK-74 is chambered for 5.45 x 39 Russian. I experienced a moment of numeric dyslexia.

Eiseley spoke about shooting "plastic bottles" last evening. "Plastic bottles" in Idahoese means "elk." They're out of season right now, but hey! this is Idaho, baby! What she was saying is that she and her boys shot at least two elk or something of the elk ilk. Perhaps something in the line of the downy-haired Idaho silk elk ilk. I just hope it wasn't a diseased decoy, you know, a sick slick silk elk ilk.

Now, the girls...girls didn't have many role models in those old movies and TV shows who were normally seen carrying a gun, so naturally girls were not generally interested in playing with guns either. The only female role model in that sense that I can think of back in the 40s, 50s, and 60s was Annie Oakley, who gained fame in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.

When you think about it, there's been quite a blurring of the once strongly separated gender roles in society. Young women are now much more inclined to adopt aggressive or assertive behaviours that were formerly seen almost exclusively as "male"...and in today's movies you see any number of female "action" heroes who play the kind of heroic roles once played almost exclusively by men. The girls aren't there just to scream, faint, and get rescued any longer. ;-D

Well, when I was a kid we did play with all those things too, of course, Stilly, but there was no greater joy for a young boy than to get hold of a BB gun, and I'll tell you why: because we all grew up on adventure movies and TV westerns, and in them our heroes were firing off guns, that's why. Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, Wyatt Earp, Jungle Jim, etc...they were all guys toting guns, okay? So a boy's natural sense of adventure was directly tied to toting a gun.

Believe me, if BB guns had been available when Tom Sawyer was a kid, every boy in America would have wanted one desperately. ;-D

Whatever happened to kids playing with old fashioned toys like sling shots? Pea shooters? Boomerangs? Balls and bats? All create projectiles or are rapidly moving objects that can break things, hurt when they hit, and do major property damage. But they're down a few levels in the scale of deadly force. Generally.

Tell them for me that rolling over onto a rifle, pistol or blade ain't exactly conducive to sleep -- roll over on a wad of keys and a cell phone and you'll get a faint idea of what it's like. And if you suffer from enuresis you have to clean it in the morning -- not to mention what the guy in the bottom bunk might feel about you.

There's BLM land about two blocks away from the house, so tonight the intrepid hunters and I clambered up the steep path and shot two plastic bottles to death up in the hills. The boys are trying to convince me to let them sleep with their weapons.

Nope!

Don't worry about it, Eisely. I blasted holes in thousands of tin cans during my youth, sank cardboard ships that I built, shot at dandelion tufts and bugs, popped away at plastic toy soldiers in earth bunkers and trenches I built in the ravine...and none of that has led to a life of crime and violence.

As a scholar, Rapaire again embrasses his noble self by confusing vowles "e" aand "i" in their micro-morphemic meanings. Life is an ante-particle, but antimatter is made of antiparticles. The debate about secession was one of the antecedents of the Civil War, but the Yankees were dedicate anti-cedents.

With a hard skin and they're all stringy and rubbery inside. The golfers as well as their balls, I mean. Mammoth is delicious; I prefer it with a Bourdelaise sauce, but won't turn it down if it's hickory-smoked and then barbecued.

Also delicious with the right sauce--mammoth, that is, not golfer. Golfers tend to taste a bit plaid, and their balls are small and hard.

Oh, Eiseley, I realized after I picked up the little guy that I probably should have had on gloves. I saw the mites on my arms, so hopped in the shower within minutes of returning it to it's nest. I'll be taking preventative measures re the house once the kiddos move on. I think they're some kind of sparrow--low in stature in the bird world, perhaps, but all birds are cute at this age.
