What's the count these days Amos? No backsliding, I hope.

MOM wants to go down to that thee-ay-ter and see what you boys are up to. She thinks you snuck in through an unlocked back door.

It's gonna be curtains for you if you keep making a scene. I've flat out admitted before to having trod the boards, as my father did before me and my nephew has since. 'Shaw, it's in my blood -- the roar of the greasepaint, the smell of the groundlings. I'm a tough act to follow.

So now it appears you are no longer fencing but have come out in public as a thespian. Well, sunlight disinfects, as they say....

In fact, three generations of my family have now been active in the Little Theater group.

Nah, I was doing tech for the "progressive" community theater group, as opposed to the Little Theater group (which my father has played in) which was at the time doing either musicals or sugary awfuls. That's since changed -- my youngest brother played Willie Lohman a couple years ago, so they're doing serious stuff now as well as some fluff.

There was another scene where Lucy was seducing her fiance so he'd end up a vampire as well (or something)). Every night save the last they were kissing and carrying on, he was working her dress up, and after a 10-count entered her father and the vamp killer. On the last night the pause was a 25-count and the woman playing Lucy wasn't quite sure about how the scene was going to end up....

Nah, this was to highlight his entrance. You know: cape over his face in the bedroom window, and as he steps out of the window to bite Lucy Western in the neck he sweeps back the ol' cape? Well, there was so much smoke he entered fanning the cape so he could see.

Flash powder doesn't work for killing vampires, Rap, you need wooden stakes. Flash powder only works for zombies.

I got all nostalgic and stuff, watching the lights. It reminded me of when I did theater tech. Once I nearly set Dracula on fire simply by using up the rest of the flash powder of the last night of the run.

I haven't been over to that part of Brooklyn for a long time. Nice to revisit the place. Under the F train, looks like. Maybe down by Kings Highway?

In the catagory of Random (or not) Traces from All Over, I took African dance classes for several years, but long after the disco craze, to which I was completely oblivious.

Watching that clip, many of those moves have their genesis in West African dance, and while subtle, there is the hint of African polyrhythms in the disco beat. I don't know the history of the evolution of disco, and so don't know how the influence runs between disco and breakdancing. The influence of African music and dance in both is clear, regardless.

Now, having learned about the lives of stars, I'm headed back to Cosmos to be illuminated by the next episode.

Away across the quantum foam
We wait for our dear sister to come home
If the bosons and the leptons let her pass
We'll see her safe on the Getaway grass.
The Getaway is that kind of place,
It grabs you by your mind,
And takes you over major space
In a minus sort of time.
So save a song for us, Dear Jane,
While pondering cosmic issues weighty,
And we'll huzzah when we see you
Safe back from 1980!

Running through CD's, YouTube, the DT, etc., hoping to feel inspired to learn a few new songs before the Getaway.

No sparks flying so far - at least not for anything I think I could do halfway well.

Having not owned a television for the better part of the past 40 years, I am pleased to have discovered that HULU has the entire Carl Sagan Cosmos series and think I will go watch another episode of that. Some would say I am 30 years behind the times. But Carl has convinced me that I am simply an old soul traveling at nearly the speed of light to reach 1980 just in time, as chance would have it, to watch this series and figure out how I got there.

Don't wait, I'll catch up with you shortly, if not before then.

By the way, it was my own mistake to translate your prose as "lungfish". The translator had come up with "fish-breathing you are", which is pretty close to "fish-breath". I thought to myself, "No, he must have meant 'lungfish'."

So, you see, it's not the robot translator that is so stupid as you think. It's me! (grin) I do need the help of that clever translator, else I would be lost, mon ami. Lost! I am too clever for my own good.

Actually, this is what you get for depending on unintelligent software to do your linguistic work for you, you see? In the first instance I did nopt call you "lungfish", but "fish-breath". What a world of difference in a small translating error! How can you expect to acheive subtlety and understated arrogance if you insist on floundering among such small-minded machinery??

LOL! Well, this is a first. I have NEVER been called a lungfish before by anyone! Shocking! And he dares use my own words against me. What an unprincipled and disrespectful act! Oh! I am incensed! Only a complete scoundrel would stoop to such tactics!

Now look here, Amos...I compose in English something that I think is amusing. That's the creative part, mon petit gateau. THAT is the part I excercise my mind upon. Then I simply get it translated into French by a robotic machine...yes...but merely because I think it sounds more pretentious and amusing to put it in French. And I learned that trick from you...it's a trick you've been using for years here. I am simply returning the favour, mon ami.

So there.

Just because I will never equal you in the art of sheer pomposity, mon vieux, is no reason to go casting these unpleasant aspersions on my supposed lack of creative ability. ;-)

If I were to use a foreign language I actually do know, I would use Spanish. However, I prefer to use French when talking to you, because it sounds more supercilious, more pompous, and much more snooty than Spanish does. I prefer to serve you a meal you are already accustomed to. French, I feel, is the ultimate language to use when looking snidely down one's nose at a pitiably inferior wretch whom one has deigned to offer a brief bit of one's own incisive repartee...much as a king deigns to throw a crust of bread to the poor.

And I learned it all from you! ;-D I am, needless to say, forever in your debt.

No, the sentiments, though mundane and uninspired, are certainly your own. But the language is not your own art, but churned out by a dull witted robotic website for your amusement. Thus, it is a pale and dusty copy of the actual ability to use the tongue.

There's an ironic joke they tell in Indian country that you come across when reading NA authors, about a bunch of NDN crawdads that have been caught and dropped in a bucket. Each time one gets near the top and almost escapes, one of the others pulls it back down into the bucket.

That's kind of what is going on with this health care argument. So many people have such wacko ideas about those who don't have coverage and they feel like they will personally be pulling the weight for the undeserving poor. They'd pull the whole system apart to protect their sense of entitlement, not realizing how such a repair will improve conditions for literally millions of people.

Twisitng in the great wind, Rapaire?

My quote, which I believe originally came from Dante Alighieri, translates as "For that matter, one rarely sees an ape wearing a hat, speaking on the phone, or packing a revolver, except in the wild visions of a madman...". Which makes perfect sense in the light of LH's prior remark, which I also understood better nor you, sir.

Li'l Hawk said, "On voit rarement un chien utiliser un chapeau ou s'engager en désaccords inutiles avec une tortue espagnole!"

That means:

A dog rarely uses a hat for vomit or engages in a useless fight with a Spanish turtle.

Again, you gotta consider the source.

Fer those of you who don't speak whatever Amos is yapping about, I'll translate:

Per quella materia una vede raramente una scimmia portare un cappello, comunicare sul telefono, o imballare un revolver, tranne nelle visioni di un pazzo.

"For what material is rarely green [is] a shimmering smack to the head, calling by telephone, or spinning a revolver, doesn't see the train in the piazza."

Sure, it don't make sense, but consider who wrote it.

Yes, Amos, I can.
--------------
My shoulder surgery, according to the EOBs we've received so far, cost in excess of US $27,800. Of that, we will have to pay less than $400 and the insurance picked up the rest.

If I had not had the surgery I would have eventually ended up with a left arm I couldn't raise above shoulder high. In addition to making surrendering difficult, I would have found it hard to hold a job, especially one that required manual labor -- digging a ditch, for example, or roofing a house. I won't even mention hugging a child or other loved one.

I could have elected to have the VA do the surgery, in SLC at the VA Hospital. That's only because I'm a "disabled" veteran. Someone who served and got out without a "disability" couldn't get that.

In addition to the surgery there is the tries made for 10 months to fix the problem with less radical methods. Right now, probably $30,000 has been expended on my left shoulder and physical therapy is ongoing.

Let's just let the poor, the uninsured, the uninsurable, die. What the hell do they ever contribute? Take someone who has to live in powered chair, so crippled up he has to even use a special thing to speak: do you think he's going to make some sort of contribution to astrophysics or something? Or that a guy in a wheelchair could be President of the US or some lunger could end up on Mt. Rushmore? They'd cost us too much -- let 'em die.
