Gosh, Rapparree, you have inspired me some. Let me see, now. Who could I shoot? Well, there's James the mailman. The dog always barks when he comes around and it disturbs my concentration. And them newlyweds three houses down with the new baby! Why they're downright uppity! And if old man Slybones across the street hadn't a died last week, I wouldn't have minded plugging him for general uselessness. By Gawd, and there's a Republican or two lives along the cross-street there, I heard them extolling the virtues of Donald Trump, which is surely a shooting sin! Yes, I see the error in my thinking now; why, there's just ALL kinds of folks around here need a good dose of lead sent off in their direction.

Now all I have to do is find that $799 dollars. Oh, my, now, THAT is gonna be a challenge. Say Rapp, whyn't you just get me that sidearm for Christmas? I like the blued model with the long barrel. Thanks so awfully much!

No one to shoot at? WHAT?!? For God's sake man! Annoy your neighbors! Or better, have them annoy you! Surely they have some annoying habits! Perhaps their cats keep you awake at night or poop in your flowers! Can't you find that they've encroached there fence onto your property? Aren't they rustling your stock? Hasn't even one of them shot your paw or yer ma? Ain't none of them dishonored yer sister or stolen yer gal? You mean to tell me that there isn't a nester, farmer, sheep herder, or claim-jumper in the lot? Get in a poker game and you'll find fast enough that they use shiners, deal from a frozen deck or off the bottom, use readers, or do other things! WORK at it, man, WORK at it! You don't want to be known as a lily-livered, panty-waisted, dry-gulching, lute-picking, back-stabbing, running-ironed, milksop of a dude, do you? Show 'em yer a REAL man! Git out there and shoot somebody!!!!

Oh, you mean this little gal--a sweetheart for single-shot 6-round revolver. I like the longer barrel .45. What do you think? There's a place down on Ruffin Road carried them. Oh, but wait--I don't have anyone to shoot at where I live. Never mind.

Ah, the joys of living in the Great Frozen, Cold, Blizzard of the North!

Amos, a TRUE story!

One of the chaps in our Cowboy Shooting group needed a new revolver. So he went 'round to Sam's and bought hisself a Ruger Vacquero (yes, it's real and you can look it up; it's also not cheap). Well, he should have known better, because when he had some very minor trouble with it, related to breaking the in mechanism, he took it back to Sam. Sam knew the problems would soon smooth themselves out, so he told the guy it was a left-handed revolver and he was shooting it right-handed. Sam also told him that since the barrel had a right-hand twist to the rifling and he was shooting it right-handed the only way to offset the problems was to use left-handed bullets. The guy only twigged when he called Ruger, told the technician on the other end of the phone what Sam had said, and the tech laughed for better than five minutes straight. The Tech then explained that the guy had been had -- and it would work well after the parts "wore in." The guy tells this on himself now and nearly chokes with laughter about how he could have been so "green."

Had my windows open until 8PM. A glorious fall day. 15C!!!! No wind!!! I shall now retire to my bedroom where the windows will also be soon shut (the door is closed to contain the cold fall air to that room alone) and I shall shiver into the rest I so deserve under a sheet and single blanket after one really fucking shitty day.

Jake... if you get the peanuts tomorrow, I'm cool with that.

I suspect you, yourself, are probably made up of left hand rope, myself. Your sinister twisting gives you away.

Jealous of being arrested? Hardly!

And I researched your friend. Anyone who knows "High Toned Dance" and similar stuff must have some authenticity. See, Lennie Sly was from Cincinnati and when I lived around there I met folks who knew him. I even know folks who knew his boy Dusty when Dusty lived in Middlefield, Ohio.   Now, Gene, I don't know. Tom Mix and Andy Devine, Gabby Hayes, Pat Butram, Will Rogers, Slim Pickens, Haywire Mac, and all the rest -- I knew 'em all. I never had any truck with Boone Helm, Soapy Smith and them characters though because my Momma raised me up right!

Yes, I've seen the forecasts. We're in for balmy weather below 6,000 feet and lots of snow above that so our aquifers keep filled. From the Pocatello/Salt Lake City corridor, however, there is forecast to be really, really lousy winter weather. Blizzards, -40C temperatures, a lot of snow and ice and sleet and hail, even a tsunami in late March. Of course the only reason SLC is exempt is because we may be flying in and out of there, especially in late February when we may go to Hawai'i.

They could go to the mountains of Tennessee and find people who can understand each other but who no one from outside the area can understand. And forget trying to talk to any of them on the phone.

Supposed to be stormy here on Wednesday. Time to bring in a few more plants and finish up winterizing the patio. MOM, you'd better take that porch hammock down this year, last winter it nearly tore down the posts it was attached to because it ended up so full of debris and snow.

YEs, to all the above. He actually once even did the full Hollywood moment being asked to sing a song while out rounding up sleepers. He knows why a dally is de rigueur over a hold-fast and has had his share of bones broken by rowdy mustangs. He knows the ins and outs of both actual cowboying and Hollywood work; he has been in a dozen cheap Westerns and does his own stunt riding in them. He knows that Roy Rogers was an athlete but Gene Autrey wasn't. He's bobbed, branded, looped, tied and broken with the best of them. He even knows why it's okay for real old-timers to wear just one spur. Ask him the next time you see him.

Can he twirl a rope while standing on the back of a horse? Can he sing a stampede into quietude? Can he throw a houlihan, catch the calf, toss it, tie it, brand it, earnotch it, cut it, and turn it bawling back to its mama within a minute and a half? Can he shoot the head off a rattler by shooting under his horse's neck while at a full gallop? Has he eaten beans cooked over a fire of cow chips or drank coffee made from alkali water? Has he been on the crooked trail to Holbrook? Does he wear boots made from the hide of somethin' you'd be scared to stomp? Can he play guitar and sing whilst cantering 'midst the coulees? Does he give a gulp at a gully or gulch? Can he tell the difference between a butte and a mesa? between right- and left- hand laid rope?

Inquiring minds wish to know!

T'aint nuffin. Friday morning I hauled a car full of folding chairs, and welcomed Steve Cormier to town. Set yup the living room full of chairs, moved the couch and tables and laid out the wine and the food dishes; welcomed the guests and dialed int he sound system and opened the evening for STeve and led the cheerleading for his impeccable cowboy styling.

Saturday morning despite the hangover I washed the dishes and glasses and re4stored all the furniture, hauled all the chairs back out to the car, dragged them down tot he company and returned them to my ex-boss. Then loaded up Steve car and sat in the back while he drove for three hours to Apple Valley, set up the house concert in a quaint slump rock adobe style house int he high desert of Apple Valley and repeated the opening numbers for Steve's wonderful cowboy songs. Slept in a storage room in the back and then packed up and sat int he back while Steve drove three hours back to San Diego. Finally unpacked and walked the poor dog. hat a weekend.

I gotta tell you though, that Steve Cormier does one helluva cowboay presentation. The Real Deal.

Everyone was happy, so I can go on living for a while yet. The mimosas were good, although Kobels and not Moet et Chandon was used and the orange juice wasn't freshly squeezed, but this wasn't part of my duties. The popovers expanded to about six inches over the top of the cups. I, of course, stayed in the corner with the ashes and served those at table and was only kicked six or eight times!

People coming for brunch: popovers, fruit, breakfast strata, mimosas, and other stuff like that. Even scrubbed the kitchen floor on my hands and knees, rubbing with the brown lye soap in boiling water, until my hands and knees were raw and bleeding. I cooked until my fingers were worn to the bone, and then I set the table (Noritake, silver, Waterford....). And me in excruciating pain from the dental surgery! But if it makes others happy then it is worth it. I only live to make others happy.

To catalog the books both Pat and I use Book Collector (http://www.collectorz.com/book/). You buy it but it's really good AND you can upload it to the cloud and then download it onto a smartphone, iphone, etc. Pat and I both have it on our iPods and being able to check for duplicates has already saved us more than the cost of the software. AND you can buy a scanner and input that way by ISBN, or by author/title, or LCCN. Overall, we find it an excellent buy (thus sayeth two pro librarians, albeit now retired, both of whom are OCLC charter members). See the PM from me.

Amos, the biggest reason I kept the tooth was that it has a gold crown on it. Not a lot of gold, but it'll buy a good dinner and drinks for two around here. As the oral surgeon said, "Eight hundred dollars to go in and worth maybe sixty when it's out."

Rap, I need to catalog the books and the quilts here. I'll look into the it's all covered under the "Contents Clause" of the homeowner's policy that you mentioned.

You kept back a wisdom tooth??

No wonder! This explains everything. It had gone bad. When wisdom teeth go bad, wisdom fails completely; it cannot but follow as the night the day, that as the wisdom tooth rots, so goes the wisdom.

There is no evidence that removing it will improve matters, but I suppose one can use hope in place of wisdom.

This will turn you into a socialist, but that's a risk we all have to take. It's the price you pay for backing cookies instead of Lou Gehrig.

You pays yer money and you takes yer chances.

Now, Mother being saved from A Fate Worse Than Death, I will say:

I'm on drugs man! Like the good stuff that medical types have! Like for the third time this year I had like general anesthesia! The oral surgeon took out my last remaining wisdom tooth, so I am no longer wise, and gave it to me, gold crown and all. The tooth's all red, but the gold is gold. So like I can get some money from that for another, like, fix. Of course, I might have some stuff in the medicine cabinets, including the T-4 I just got. Tomorrow at 1320 MST I must away to the barber-chirgeon to have a tooth (which is not bothering me) extracted. Because the fellow with the pull is an oral surgeon and because stitches will be involved, there will be IV anesthesia.

My curse upon your venom'd stang,
That shoots my tortur'd gums alang,
An' thro' my lug gies mony a twang,
Wi' gnawing vengeance,
Tearing my nerves wi' bitter pang,
Like racking engines!

When fevers burn, or argues freezes,
Rheumatics gnaw, or colics squeezes,
Our neibor's sympathy can ease us,
Wi' pitying moan;
But thee-thou hell o' a' diseases-
Aye mocks our groan.

Adown my beard the slavers trickle
I throw the wee stools o'er the mickle,
While round the fire the giglets keckle,
To see me loup,
While, raving mad, I wish a heckle
Were in their doup!

In a' the numerous human dools,
Ill hairsts, daft bargains, cutty stools,
Or worthy frien's rak'd i' the mools, -
Sad sight to see!
The tricks o' knaves, or fash o'fools,
Thou bear'st the gree!

Where'er that place be priests ca' hell,
Where a' the tones o' misery yell,
An' ranked plagues their numbers tell,
In dreadfu' raw,
Thou, Toothache, surely bear'st the bell,
Amang them a'!

O thou grim, mischief-making chiel,
That gars the notes o' discord squeel,
Till daft mankind aft dance a reel
In gore, a shoe-thick,
Gie a' the faes o' Scotland's weal
A townmond's toothache!

Shucks and durns, it's all covered under the "Contents Clause" of the homeowner's policy. But the agent did say that he'd never been asked that before.

So Pat hit him with her quilt collection. Same answer, unless the things are worth a LOT more than we think.

Okay, I have the annual, good old, wonderful, appointment with the insurance dude this afternoon. Gonna hit him up with what is probably a new one to him: How do Pat and I insure our books?

I have 1,914 cataloged and inventoried, she has 1,100. Using SLJ's average prices for 2015, I have a collection worth better than USD 39,000 and hers, being much more specialized is worth at least USD 31,000. Of course, not everything is cataloged and inventoried yet! And then there are her quilts -- the mid-18th Century one she just got has a center panel dyed with lapis lazuli (yes, that was done).

Then there's the fabr...fab...fa...f...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Shucks, you could spread tar on pieces of cedar shingle, leave it in the break room, and the library staff would eat it. I shan't say where, but at one library a cataloger with cupcake on her breath disappeared after laying down the break room.

MOM met my Zeke at the dog door recently. He showed her how you can open the real door beside the dog door insert, so she won't ever be locked out again. He uses a big chocolate lab nose and somehow turns it into a wedge that just pushes the door open. MOM will use her hands.

Today was a charming one, of small rebellions. Beginning a trend, I hope.

The woman in charge of my place of employment has created such an environment of unhappiness, tamping down ingenuity and initiative, that you have to do what you can when you can. Fingers crossed that she decides to leave - sooner rather than later.
