There is hope. We'll soon go from being miserably wet to miserably hot. This was in the paper this morning:

No, seriously, it'll stop raining

Our recent almost-daily rains bring to mind a song by Texas-born bluesman T-Bone Walker: Call it Stormy Monday, But Tuesday Is Just As Bad.

This Tuesday, however, we just might get a break, according to the National Weather Service.

The forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of rain early today and a 40 percent chance this afternoon. Then the now-tiresome stormy skies should lighten to partly cloudy for the foreseeable future.

High temperatures are expected to hit around 90 degrees Tuesday and through the weekend. Nights are expected to get slightly warmer, with a low of about 69 degrees tonight and Tuesday, followed by about 75 for the rest of the week.

I think it might have drizzled last night, but my guage in the morning is a glance out the window at the wooden fence out back. It could simply be the soggy wood is wicking up water standing on the ground. At this point the amount of rain is beyond ridiculous and it's making everyday tasks difficult. I offer as evidence the thread about the North Texas Scottish Festival. Those of us in this area had to mow before we could go. We all know that it if gets any taller and any wetter we'll never get through it. You take your opportunity to mow when you can.

On the other hand, my vitex in the front yard is having a marvelous spring. It is a good xeriscape plant, but has tolerated the extra moisture and is in full blue bloom. Every day I have people stop their cars and ask me what it is. One guy was so interested I told him I had dug up a couple of small ones out of flower beds that I was going to sell in a garage sale soon. He bought them on the spot--and a real bargain. The area nursery would probably charge him 5 times the price. I just wanted them to go to a good home. "Give them good drainage and don't plant them too deep!" was my only advice. I wonder if I should have pointed out that he should wait until the ground dries a little. Anything transplanted right now will probably rot in the ground. The low spots in the neighborhood are beginning to take on a kind of "eau de compost" aroma.

forgot a word. that should have read "year of our grandfather's birth" - 1890.

I never claimed to have functional brain cells.

It finally rained Sunday evening - light soak for about 1/2 hour, followed by quite heavy - and then soaking rain again overnight.

We needed it - one of the nearby towns has flood warnings AND a water restriction going at the same time.

"a Silver Dollar minted in the year of our birth"

US Silver dollars were not minted between 1936 and 1963. And a '64(Denver only) is both illegal to own and very valuable! None from 1965 to 1970, either.

The only time I was in Vegas was in the early 60's ; was nothing like it is now.

But all the gas stations crossing Nevada had one arm bandits. And my Dad got us each a Silver Dollar minted in the year of our birth. (Made the poor guy go through umpty rolls of silver dollars to find them)

There are large parts of the town that have no odor of the gambling hell about them, with very pleasant homes and a whole economy based on other things than gambling. But understandably the thing that sticks in memory is the gigantic monuments to human avarice and whacky tatse. We had breakfast in an outlying casino called Whiskey Pete's which for reasons known only to the designers is builot to look like a large castle, with masonry turrets and crenellations all over; but the theme is the hard-wock miner, who probably never saw a castle. The attached hotel is excellent in the high-volume all American 20th century sense, but the giant hall, like so may others is a bizarre snakepit of flasing and gonging and tired croupiers and dealers, mirrors and blinking lights and row after row of the electronic equivalent of the one-armed bandit. And everywhere, at every hour, the sorry, hypnotic souls drift from machine to machine, dreaming of jackpots. Most bizarre.

The big ones on the Strip itself are even worse. But, as I say, we weree visiting real folks away to the north end of town, and had a lovelyy time far outside the miasma of avarice and megabling.

I've never been partial to Las Vegas. I've had to spend time in the airport between flights, and find it so odd to find all of the one-armed bandits in full use. As you say, throwing money away.

Oh ow ow ow ow. My commiseration to poor bro. BBW is still recovering from her rotatorcuff surgery. Nothing awry but a lot of pain in thehealing.

Rustic, you are a breath indeed and of freash air too!

Stilly: have you considered SOuthern California? We never get floods.

MM: hope things dry up for you!! :D

One thing I can tell you: the Mojave Desert is very, very dry and so is Las Vegas.

The party was great. We rolled out this morning at 0630 and stopped at a casino outside of town for breakfast about 7, and the damn machine-hall was still riddled with hypnotized people throwing money into the hole. Just an amazing sight.

Dear Mom,

Here I sit in Valporaiso, IN -- drove in a bit ago after seeing the nephew graduate and visiting with the other brother outside Springfield, IL. I'll be flying back to SLC tomorrow evening, so this might be my only post for a couple days. Maybe. But as soon as I get back I'll explain about the graduation and how the tuba player drowned.

And how my brother ripped up his rotator cuff unloading a riding lawn mower.

Your fave rave son,
Rapaire

Well SHIT, Mom! I rained again last night. I mowed a little bit of the back yard, as much as I could (tough pushing and the mower kept almost stalling out) before it got dark. I hoped to do a little more today, but it rained, and blew hard enough to knock over the patio chairs.

Thank you!

Rustic, good to see you, sorry you came through when no-one seems to have been home.

Rain is good, but when you get it every day in what is usually a dry climate, it starts to do strange things. At the festival today, it had the composting smell like a barnyard because the turf is beginning to rot. There was standing water everywhere and mud and the chairs were sinking, so the audience in the various tents were trying to not sink with their chairs into the quagmire.

I need to get my head inspected. . . 90 minutes later I finished my front yard and the next door front yard (they're out of town). I must say, when you actually intend to grow Bermuda, and you fertilize and water it, that stuff is dense and hard to mow. My homogenous mix of broadleaf little green things in with the bermuda and wild grasses is much easier to push the mower over (and it wasn't easy this time, what with the more than adequate rainfall). I did volunteer to mow. But I should have rented a heard of goats instead.

My kids are in Dallas until Sunday. I'm going to work today, a funeral tomorrow morning, then I'm going to go listen to Mudcatter Jed Marum at the North Texas Scottish Festival. I'll try to log on occasionally to see if Mom needs a boost. I hope that since Rapaire is home he'll stop collecting golf balls in the back yard occasionally and go check on MOM.

Though perhaps not technicolor, I must report that on my large looping road trip this evening from southwest Fort Worth into the south end of Dallas, intersecting the city on the major north/south interstate highway, then exiting the far north end via a different interstate highway headed back west and following a leisurely "S" swoop through downtown Fort Worth, that there were lots of colorful lights. [Five extra points on your test if you correctly diagram that sentence.] The State of Texas has finally gotten serious about the drivers who race past highway work crews. Not only are the signs clearly place indicating "double fines when workers are present," they now sent out a auto armada, a fleet of Fords, perhaps even a bevy of Chevies (yeah, I know. . .automatopoeia failed on that last one. . .sorry, I couldn't resist. . .) but they put flashing strobes and blue and red bars on top and yellow blinking arrows and fully-flashing police vehicles to chase down offenders. There were lots of these crews out. And if you were so fortunate as to be in an area free of the Ford Flotillas, then you were in the land of Barnett Shale and the many and sundry gas wells springing up like toadstools on the landscape. Tall very brightly lit towers, each rising from broad base crouching on the crushed stone bed they prepared for it.

And now that I'm home there aren't blinking lights, but it is 1am in the morning and there are foxes singing their yipping song and a mockingbird going hammer-and-tongs trying to indict some poor other bird with the charge of disturbing the peace. It always gives him away as a mockingbird when he does the car alarm. The grackles can't do alarms nearly so well.

You'll hear about technicolor and plenty more if I get hit by lightning at the Scottish festival this weekend. I'm planning to go, and it is planning to rain and thunder (isolated).

The kids are gearing up for their A-KON anime convention in Dallas. I'll drive them over in a little while. Moonglow downsized her plans some since she has been a little tired, but I think they'll still have plenty of fun. And I'll have the house to myself for two days! I'm awaiting the unveiling of this year's costumes. Now that's where you get the technicolor!

I almost had a heart attack
I thought that Mom had fallen slack
And dropped right off the bottom row
Into the darkness deep, below!
My hair stood out in sudden fear,
I heard my heart pound in my ears,
That Mom -- our truest,m staunchest friend
Should meet such an untimely end!

But then I blinked, and vision cleared,
And though the thread-list still looked weird
I saw with lightening relief
There were no grounds for shock and grief,
Mom -- still the brightest thread in town,
Was nestled there, 'bout half-way down
And so I thought, "Let's bring her up
Back the top, my butter cup!"

So posting merrily, I wrote these lines
To Mother's altitude refine
And saw her lifted to the top once more,
Newly triumphant, as she was before.
So now, at peace, I go to get my rest,
Knowing I've helped keep Mom the best.

Suffice to say for now that we saw bison (lots!), pronghorns, eagles (Bald and Golden), pelicans, a griz with a cub (from a safe distance!), elk, moose (got pix!), mulies, and a bighorn sheep, to say the least.

Hi, Mom-o-Mom!!

It did not remain here rain with us.

Sorry--I have been maundering around trying to get my wits around linguistics, and that dragged me into Suppes' remarkable cross-disciplinary genius which led me to the following charming account, excerpted here:

The Bell inequalities give necessary and sufficient conditions
for such correlated phenomena as the spin of particles, often represented
in entanglement experiments by the polarization of photons, to
have hidden variables as common causes of the correlations. The point
of the inequalities is to give a condition just in terms of the observable
correlations for there to be such hidden causes. It turns out, not
initially clear that this is the case, that the inequalities are equivalent
to requiring that the random variables or probabilistic events having
the pairwise correlations must have a joint probability distribution of
all four together. So Bell's requirement was just equivalent to a wellknown
probabilistic problem for a great variety of special cases: when
do random variables having certain marginal distributions have a joint
distribution?

The subject is messy and full of tantalizing partial results.
Some of the nice earlier results, with no connection with quantum
mechanics, were given by the distinguished French mathematician
Maurice Frechet, whom I met in the 1960s in Paris, but, as is usually
so for me and other academics who talk to a lot of different people, I
cannot remember anything about our conversations. (John Bell I did
meet once and had a very good talk about the foundations of physics
at the Stanford Faculty Club; Bell, like a lot of other scientists who are
well-known for conceptual innovations, had a strong natural interest in
philosophy.

I d0on't mind telling you, I am coming to the conclusion that I cannot be myself as a hobby with stuff like this coming at me from strange directions. It's a full-time job!!!

BBW continues to grow strong and is fiercely independent even when she could use some help with her sling-and-arm. She's under very narrow constraints of movement -- must not move left arm using own shoulder muscles under any corcumstances. She can move it passively, such as by laying it on a counter and moving back from it, or having someone move it through degrees of motion.

The pain attacks from her surgery are well under control and she is down to one Vicodin in the evening, and occasional Ibuprofen other times, to keep it manageable. She is an astonishing, strong, bright woman.

Aren't ya glad I married her, Mom?   I yam. You have no IDEA how much trouble I would have been, if I hadn't done that.
