Finally got through, and now that I'm here, I don't have anything to say. Bummer!

And new research has discovered that our planet used to fart more than it does now:

A team of University of Minnesota scientists has discovered how iron- and chromium-rich rocks can generate natural gas (methane) and related hydrocarbons when reacted with superheated fluids circulating deep beneath the floor of the Atlantic Ocean. Because the process is completely nonbiological, the hydrocarbons could have been a source of "food" for some of the first organisms to inhabit the Earth. Also, methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and this process may have contributed to global warming early in geologic time, the researchers said.

This doesn't really lead to anything but it makes me chuckle.

AND my rifle stock came today. Now I can eventually finish the flintlock Jaeger I started over a year ago.

And yes, the carving is VERY nice indeed. Oak leaves, acorns, and three-pointed Celtic knots.

Bigfoot fever erupted last month when some fish farm workers claimed to have spotted three of the beasts -- two adults and a youngster -- on the edge of a forest reserve in southern Johor state.

Their improbable tale was lent some authority soon after when an Orang Asli -- an indigenous ethnic group known for their expertise in the jungle -- also said he had stumbled across one of the legendary ape-men.

"He saw the creature which was hairy and brownish in colour, it was about 12 feet (four metres) tall," said Johor National Parks director Hashim Yusoff.

"It was not aggressive, but the Orang Asli was startled by the creature and ran away.

"My personal feeling is that there is a possibility it could be what we call in Malaysia the 'mawas' ... more of a primate," he said. "But we don't deny the sightings," he added, insisting that the Orang Asli "do not lie."

"We've got to prove it and we've got to do it scientifically."

Wildlife authorities have embarked on a quest to verify the claims, and are considering mounting camera traps to capture images of anything roaming the jungles.

...............

Man, this is the week that WAS. Hyperdrive and Bigfoot in ONE WEEK!!! Wowwwwwww.

Organising a blues festival I don't know about specifically, but on the general principals of organising festival stuff, go mad now.
It'll mean people are used to it by the event. Much better than going mad the week before it. You're posting to Moab, so that's a good start.

The next popular exercise is getting artistic types to actually give you a useful answer if they're going to be there or not. Unlees you pin them down, they'll still be telling you maybe until three days after it's finished.
A useful warm-up for this is trying to heard an infinite number of cats away from several plates of salmon, without annoying any of them...

Whilst doing this, you should be using your other hand to try and hold off the real world, comprising such necessary evils as venues, caterers etc, who also like to know what they're supposed to be doing.

Promise yourself that you'll get someone else to organise the next one. I know a couple who took a year off organising our annual trip to a festival, by getting married. They organised a wedding as light relief instead that year.

And remember to enjoy it!!!!

Ya gotta have about 400 years of oppression, an angst certificate from somebody like BB King, be on parole or just outa Central State (penitentary, not University), be able to play your axe 'til your fingers bleed and your mouth organ until your lips bleed, a woman that done you wrong, and a pickup that...no, wait, that last is for country music.

Oh, yeah, it helps to have a name like "Howlin' Wolf" or "Blind Lemon Pledge" too.

I'm weaning myself off ties, even at work. Sometimes I wear 'em, sometimes I don't, and sometimes I wear a bolo -- big ol' chunk of silver in the shape of a griz, or a slide with white turquoise or something.

That is, when I remember to wear a shirt.

Why do we wear those damn tie things, anyway? I count myself fortunate I no longer have to, working in an informal engineering firm, but if I were President I'd do shirtsleeves and no tie fpr all but the most formal occasions. I don't understand 'em, ties. They think they are so important, but all they do is hang around....

I stumble along muttering to myself, sipping Geritol out of a paper bag, drooling, my teeth mostly gone and whatever is left yellowish black and rotten. Soup stains cover my tattered sweater and would cover my ragged pants if I wore pants. And it all depends upon my Depends anyway.

I was typing that quickly to beat number predators, in case any cretins were aiming at round numbers. It is a really old joke.

A group of cannibals were so lucky as to snag a missionary and his canoe in the wilds of ________ (the way Jane Austen did it--fill in the blank yourself). He was traveling with his personal goods and some foodstuffs, including a case of Seven-Up.

The cannibals cooked and consumed the missionary, eating everything except his thing. . . and as I already gave away below, when asked about why they didn't eat the thing, the answer was "things go better with Coke."

You may have to be of a certain age to remember that slogan. Or do they still use it?

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (Reuters) -- King Kong may be a far-fetched creation of Hollywood but scientists say the big ape has some basis in biological fact: animals on islands often evolve into gigantic versions of their mainland kin.

"There is a whole body of research on islands which suggests gigantism occurs on them but of course nothing on the scale of King Kong," said Sue Lieberman, an evolutionary biologist and director of the global species program for WWF International.

"There is evidence that this happens because of isolation and a lack of competition ... the further an island is from the mainland the more potential there is for the evolution of new species," she told Reuters by telephone from Rome.

I believe this also reflects on the growth of egos. Although no man is an island, it is clear that any individual can emulate insularity by either erecting barriers to block off his inherent connections with all life, or by choosing some obsessive computation that makes him or her feel more "right" than any other, necessitating the reduction of any other in his viewpoint. Either mechanism will serve, and both produce augmented insularity in the individual world view. Because this is an artifact and not the natural condition of the individual it absorbs a great deal of mental effort, usually below the conscious level, to maintain the state of pseudo-separation.

Under these conditions, the growth of the indigenous fauna -- notably the Ego -- can be irritated to respond by developing a condition of gigantism, which in the makeup of an individual is something like a case of hives -- painful, itchy, inescapable, and dominating.

I leave it as an exercise for the reader to identify any he or she may know to whom this applies.

I got the baskets without the struggle I expected. Just as well. eBay has had some nice items lately. I picked up a beautiful Santa Clara deeply carved Avanyu pot for a very nice price a couple of weeks ago. Only reason was I was up late waiting for the kids to come in from their Dad's house (for christmas eve) so I had a couple of hours to kill. I don't fill the stockings until after the kiddos are in bed. Anyway, this wonderful pot came by and I was the only bidder. Got it for probably 1/3 or 1/4 of what I usually see them go for.

Every so often you get lucky. But Mom knows that!

I wandered lonely as a nun
Through empty halls and dusty rooms.
Then, all at once, I heard the sound
Of a million flowering, swelling wombs
And newborn lives and souls reborn
From far-off Han to LA Yuppie
Re-learning wisdom rudely torn,
As human, lion, panda, guppie!
Across the planet, by the clock
New lives on every hand grew bold
And cohorts formed of gleaming eyes
And wisdom's robes of blue and gold.
And this time, I could see it plain,
We would leave the old mistakes behind
Outgrow old madness, and old pain,
And build a wiser time and mind
For those of every form and kind.

Since I first heard of Drexler' and Feynman and their vision of building with the very very small, I have dreamed of a day when the entire energy budget of a home would be met by the ambient impact of solar, wind, noise, vibration, cosmic rays and what have you on the structure of the house itself.

So -- to me, anyway -- this may be important,. Because it could not only lead to a major step toward energy independence for the US, but also untie millions of poorer cultures from their energy-driven shackles:

os Alamos National Laboratory scientists have discovered that a phenomenon called carrier multiplication, in which semiconductor nanocrystals respond to photons by producing multiple electrons, is applicable to a broader array of materials that previously thought. The discovery increases the potential for the use of nanoscrystals as solar cell materials to produce higher electrical outputs than current solar cells.

In papers published recently in the journals Nature Physics and Applied Physics Letters, the scientists demonstrate that carrier multiplication is not unique to lead selenide nanocrystals, but also occurs with very high efficiency in nanocrystals of other compositions, such as cadmium selenide. In addition, these new results shed light on the mechanism for carrier multiplication, which likely occurs via the instantaneous photoexcitation of multiple electrons. Such a process has never been observed in macroscopic materials and it explicitly relies on the unique physics of the nanoscale size regime.

According to Richard Schaller, a Los Alamos scientist on the team, "Our research of carrier multiplication in previous years was really focused on analyzing the response of lead selenide nanocrystals to very short laser pulses. We discovered that the absorption of a single photon could produce two or even three excited electrons. We knew, somewhat instinctively, that carrier multiplication was probably not confined to lead selenide, but we needed to pursue the question."

Lead project scientist Victor Klimov explains, "Carrier multiplication actually relies upon very strong interactions between electrons squeezed within the tiny volume of a nanoscale semiconductor particle. That is why it is the particle size, not its composition that mostly determines the efficiency of the effect. In nanosize crystals, strong electron-electron interactions make a high-energy electron unstable. This electron only exists in its so-called 'virtual state' for an instant before rapidly transforming into a more stable state comprising two or more electrons."

Full article can be found here.

In other news of great interest, University of Iowa researchers have found a star orbiting a "medium-sized" black hole -- about 1,000 times more massive than the sun -- in the nearby starburst galaxy M82, a development that may help explain how medium-sized black holes form and evolve, according to a paper to be published in the Jan. 5 issue of Science Express, the online version of the journal Science. Full story at http://www.physorg.com/news9605.html.

And in an investigation smacking of forensic detective work, scientists have measured the rate of star death and rebirth in our galaxy by combing through the sparse remains of exploded stars from the last few million years. They conclude the Milky Way produces seven new stars a year.

So, Lena was fresh over and got a job as a maid for a rich family. One day she was cleaning in the master bedroom and saw a used condom in the trash can. She started to wail and scream and cry, and the lady of the house came running.

Lena couldn't talk, but just pointed to the trash can and it's contents.

"What!" the lady snapped. "Don't you have sex in Norway?"

"Yah," replied Lena through her tear, "but not so hard to make the skin come off."

Ole lay slowly dying in his bedroom. The family moved around the house speaking in hushed voices, women were in the kitchen preparing food for the visitors who would arrive after the announcement of his death.

Lena visited Ole, sitting on the edge of his bed as the family moved in around the edges.

"Is that you, Lena?" Ole asked.
"Yes, Ole, and the family is here also."
"Is everyone here?" he asked weakly.
"Yes, Ole," she replied, wiping a tear from her cheek.
"If you're all in here, then why is the kitchen light still on?"
