gnu - I may be able to help you, specially if they are USA coins, as I'm more knowledgable about those. If they're gold or silver coins, I can definitely find out what they're worth, providing I know the condition they're in. The best thing is probably if you send me some photos and a detailed description of the dates, mint marks, etc. I'll pm you my email address and you can follow up on that.

Gold and silver bullion have gone way high in price in the last year, so it's probably a good time to cash in on old coins in those metals...although one can never be certain whether the value will still keep going up. The most well-informed people I know think gold and silver are over-priced right now and heading for a correction...but no one knows that for sure. Gold is at about $1600/oz now, down from a high of almost $1900 last year, and silver's at about $28/oz...which has put the raw bullion value of a lot of collector coins above the old collector value of same. Chris at the coin shop thinks gold ought to be priced at about $1200 at best right now if it were being priced realistically.

The really crazy thing is, though....no one can ever be 100% positive where the trend is going to go. It depends on a lot of unpredictable factors.

Most coins of circulated types from the last eighty years are of very little value, I was sorry to find out. We had about three kilos of them handed down in a shoebox from my father in law, including some interesting prewar francs, some Japanese Occupation army scrip, a whole kaboodle of pence and shillings, and some Chinese coins from before the Revolultion; somehow none of them appraised for much. We gave them to my son for safekeeping to start his son's collection, if he grew up to be interested.

LH... perhaps you could help me with the value of some coins. Maybe pics could work? if you have time. Of course, if they are worth anything, I'll give you a cut. Maybe ship them to you and you give me a cut? Just a few weeks ago, I found a 100 Franc (French) coin which is, alas, now worthless.

It's a quiet, lovely, balmy morning in Southern California. My great excitement is that yesterday I received my new Allen&Heath ZED-10FX Mixer and have wrangled my way through the forest of buttons and knobs enough to get it to record and playback via my media Mac running SoundStudio. No small feat considering how little I really know about the intricacies of sound engineering. I have a pro coming Sunday to walk me through optimizing the recording session.

There is hope!

I just got off the phone with a friend in the Bay Area (see, I really do know people in California besides Amos!). I haven't spoken with her in several years -- she went through some VERY tough time and is now in a powered chair. I got in contact again with her because her father died just last week -- a true legend Back Home, he was. She was also working for AIG when AIG fired everyone and then went under...they had literally begged her to come back to work there.

Lovely! Sounds like you had a great day. I had an interesting visit to the local coin shop (in Barrie)today, sold some old coins for a really decent price. The guy there is a true hobbyist, does it for the love of it, and pays you what the stuff is worth instead of ripping you off.

Given that I already know what the stuff is worth, having done quite a bit of research first, I've avoided getting shafted by various less scrupulous outfits of which there are many around these days. Chris gives me 85 to 90% of what he'll sell the same item for. The gold and silver shops that have sprung up all over will sometimes give uninformed (and most often elderly) people as little as 10 or 15% of what the item is really worth!

With this sort of thing, as with most things, it's best not to be in a hurry, but to spend some time investigating and getting a number of different quotes before making a decision.

Now if ONLY I still had that old Hula Hoop! ;-)

Sorry, MOM, I was too busy for a little while to visit. We had Art and Jenn Brooks come by and spend the night last night, on their way to San Antone. It was great to get to meet them (and plot evil deeds for the next Secret Santa exchange. . . )

I have nothing of importance or news to report herein so I shant post herein. What's your excuse?

Of course, banter, especially silly banter, is always fun. Anybody got any?

I attended a small family reunion today. My cousin and I regaled the old folks with much silly banter and stoies of our perceptions of "life on Lower Robinson Street" from when we were tads. Prompted them to tell theirs. Didn't get around to the story of the penny matches and the fire. Good thing perhaps. Supper was beyond delicious. A true Acadian chicken dinner.

Sorry for the gobble. Back to youse. Anyone have anything of substance?

I find Chongo much realer than Rap's delusionary excesses. Why? Well, he's more modest, that's why. Rapparee needs to attend a self-help course to cure himself of monumental grandiosity.

As for you, Amos, your continued attacks upon poor Chongo do you no credit, but reveal a nasty undercurrent of specist prejudice that is as shameful as it is uncalled for. Only a heartfelt apology can clear the air. I hope you realize that, my good man.

Here's the rub, Rapp: the imagination which you claim is the figmenter of all of us figments itself, in truth, a figment of your imagination; the truth is that we are not, ourselves figments of your imagination, but rather that your impressions of us are figments of your figmentary imagination, which is a product, in turn, of your actual imagination. Not that it doesn't take considerable horsepower to dummy up a whole extra layer like that and then imagine everything into it, but much as I respect the heroic aspects of your delusion, it's a case of loving honor more and all that.

You are all figments of MY imagination. Chonga is a figment of a figment. Her/his ideas are figments of a figment of a figment. I believe that Apple would sell and iPod to anything with the money, especially since they are already sold by any store which can cough up the wholesale price. Face it: Apple, while making decent products in their Chinese factories, sold out years ago. Where is the vision that created the Macintosh or the Lisa? -- gone, sold for as figurative thirty pieces of silver! No further proof is needed than the Apple/Samsung lawsuit: "Your product is rectangular! You breached out patents on rounded corners! We patented the color black! Waaaaaa!"

Neener, neener--Apple wouldn't even SELL an iPhone to a simian.

(sigh)

Canadian history is, for the most part, a bit more sober and less dramatic than that (with a couple of exciting parts when the USA tried to take us over, admittedly....oh, and there was the Riel Rebellion, but I digress...).

gnu, I thought it was Sergeant Renfrew and his dog Cuddles. Are you sure it's Corporal Renfrew?

Oh, another thing, gnu...I noticed you engaging in furious combat with the legions of the terminally self-righteous over on another "gun control"-related thread. My heart went out to you, as it does to anyone who gets drawn into such fractious and profitless and mean-spirited discussions, all of which soon descend into gross stereotyping and personal attack on one set of people by another set of people. One is better off to just avoid such threads entirely, I think, and I usually do make sure to avoid (posting on) them....but then a shocking thought occurred to me! Your member name gnu is an anagram for the word.....gun! Yikes! I wonder if the holier-than-thou who have the moral solution to everything have noticed THAT!!!!

Let's hope not. ;-D It could get even worse if they do.

There's a race of men that don't fit in,
A race that can't stay still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin,
And they roam the world at will.

They range the field and they rove the flood,
And they climb the mountain's crest;
Theirs is the curse of the gypsy blood,
And they don't know how to rest.

If they just went straight they might go far,
They are strong and brave and true;
But they're always tired of the things that are,
And they want the strange and new.

They say: "Could I find my proper groove,
What a deep mark I would make!"
So they chop and change, and each fresh move
Is only a fresh mistake.

And each forgets, as he strips and runs
With a brilliant, fitful pace,
It's the steady, quiet, plodding ones
Who win in the lifelong race.

And each forgets that his youth has fled,
Forgets that his prime is past,
Till he stands one day, with a hope that's dead,
In the glare of the truth at last.

He has failed, he has failed; he has missed his chance;
He has just done things by half.
Life's been a jolly good joke on him,
And now is the time to laugh.

Ha, ha! He is one of the Legion Lost;
He was never meant to win;
He's a rolling stone, and it's bred in the bone;
He's a man who won't fit in.

Seems to me it's about time for words like "moil" and "marge," i.e.,

There are strange things done in the midnight sun
      By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
      That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
      But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
      I cremated Sam McGee.

Forget this Preston stuff. That was TV. Telly. The Boob Toob. Or that radio, which is better, but still not as good as poetry.

As for William Preston, world-renowned Mountie, I of course recognized the name instanter. But that was merely the FIGMENT William Preston.

The REAL William Preston has done so many things it is unbelievable--he was an Irish poet, a Confederate general, a senator, Presiding Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints...the list goes on and on:

William Preston (actor) (1921–1998)
William Preston (Freemason) (1742–1818), Scottish author of Illustrations of Masonry
William Preston (Kentucky) (1816–1887), U.S. politician, ambassador, and Confederate officer
William Preston (poet) (1753–1807), Irish poet
William Preston (Virginia) (1729–1783), Irish-born frontier Virginia leader, signer of the Fincastle Resolutions
William Preston (Royal Navy officer), captain in the British Royal Navy who, along with James Stirling, was responsible for the foundations of Perth and Fremantle in Western Australia
William Preston (UK politician) (1874–1941), Conservative M.P. for Walsall, 1924–1929
William Alfred Preston (1848–1944), MPP in Ontario, Canada
William B. Preston (Mormon) (1830–1908), Presiding Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1884–1907
William Ballard Preston (1805–1862), U.S. politician from Virginia
William C. Preston (1794–1860), U.S. senator from the South Carolina
William Campbell Preston (1794–1860), U.S. politician from Pennsylvania and Virginia
William G. Preston, American architect
Billy Preston (1946–2006), American musician
