Baja Times (English Edition)
Volume XXXII, Number 147, p.12

A fight to end all fights broke out in Tijuana last Thursday when an American, who is yet to be identified, beat several local men who were drinking in a local park. The American, who is from San Diego, assaulted the men without cause, screaming "Muerto! Muerto!" One of the men attacked was able to hit the American heavily on the jaw. The attacker fled before police arrived. An extradition is expected shortly as the police claim to have positive evidence of the attacker's identity.

A dentist visit? Sure, Amos, sure. We believe you. Sure.

Nephew has given me a 2000 Taurus in pretty decent shape for Sum Yung Sun to drive. We went up to WV this weekend to get it. After following the dear boy for 300+ miles in heavy freeway traffic, I am quite pleased with his sensible driving.

Thank you, Gnu, for reminding me why I endure the heat and humidity of southern summers.

Thank you for sharing those photos, Amos. The day shall probably come that I will waltz through that door, bearing some item, perhaps, of Rapparee's personal property. But now I will go eat a piece of avocado in your honor. Beautiful stained glass! I hope your jaw heals soon.

Eiseley

If the gods of good fortune grace us with a visit from Ms Eiseley, Rapp, I shall not fear, for I will break your spell and free her from your thrall. Do not doubt it. But, so she does not have to return to Idaho empty-handed, I will gift her with an avocado from these parts.

It's gonna look SWELL on my house! Eiseley's on her way, so if you feel a slight breeze, Amos, you'll know she's been by.

At Old Faithful tonight and tomorrow night, and then we head home. Tuesday night in Bozeman, a very pleasant town indeed. Tomorrow we want to hike the Upper Geyser Basin.

Thanks, Stilly! The extraction has begun healing nicely and although tender is not hurting much. The Mexican dentist is extraordinarily competent and meticulous, and very thoughtful, and always chooses to do the right thing. He made me a little plastic plate with a temp tooth on it to put in my mouth for show. Eventually we shall have a sturdy implant and a new bridge in the gap. Meanwhile I look like a moonshiner on payday when I smile.

Amos, you need some of gnu's snow to pack on your jaw. Go up there, or have him ship you some.

Eiseley, do me a favor and go get it for me, please. Amos won't miss it; he's in too much pain and stuff. You know, the kind of "stuff" you get in Tiajuana. I shan't go into any detail.

Yes, we did have a reservation for this evening and after entering the last post we discovered that the room was actually ready, so we moved into it right away. Then a wildlife tour -- coyotes, elk, bison, dippers, golden-eye, and big horn sheep. There were also several Wooly Mammoths (after which Mammoth Hot Springs is named), in their Winter "white phase." Also snowy egrets, swans, ermine, snowshoe hares, and a whole flock of Great Snowy Owls. And trout and extremophiles.

All in all, a nice day. Tomorrow we're off to Old Facefull and Snow Lodge, where there is Internet in the rooms.

God, this is exhausting!

Gnu, someone spilled WHiteOut all over your photos.

Mom, I just limped home with an aching jaw and a bleary stare from having spent two and a half hours in the dentists chair (well actually, the chair for his patient, not his chair). One extraction, one temp crown, and a goddamned bite=plate thingy that makes me feel like a pre-teen. Oy!! Plus, slogging over half of Tijuana in the pouring rain. Yes, it is raining again. I dunno what is becoming of this world. Anyway I am feeling pretty beat up. So do not let the sibs give me any crap, okay? You tell 'em.Mom we have the most BEAUTIFUL front door now!! Hand-crafted beech and BBW's mother made a beautiful stained-glass section for the center panel. It is stunning!

Of course I do. I have one part I call "left arm" and another I call "my head" and others have other names. I have even named my bones: metatarsals and phalanges are but two examples.

It was tough today, doing lots of nothing much. Tomorrow we take wildlife tour...all we saw today were elk, elk, elk. Probably early to bed tonight, too. Oh, this is soooooooo hard to take! But when it becomes difficult I think of Amos, slaving away, and everything becomes alright again and I redouble my efforts at relaxing, knowing that I have to do it for him as well.

Eiseley, I have photographed rare tracks of snow snakes!

Since the hotel at Mammoth Hot Springs is old, there is no Internet in the rooms. Therefore, I am sitting here in the lounge enjoying an appetizer of smoked trout, a Moose Drool, and the company of a beautiful brunette. Outside it is cold and snowy, but it's quite nice in here.

Amos, whatever DO you working stiffs do? I am umbeset by the luxury of relaxing -- only a hot tubbing this evening and NOTHING on the schedule tomorrow. Of course, there is the Lamar Valley wildlife tour on Saturday, but I'll do my best to hold up my end.

Remember those Google Book Ngrams we were playing with a while back? I sent a link to that site to an English professor who is surveying the canon by collecting tables of contents of anthologies. As far back as they can find them. It seems the occurrence of names over the years will turn up, and you can do successive searches in Google Books to find where they actually are used.

Gonna go over to Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellerstone np tomorrow, spend three nights there, then down to Snow Lodge at Old Faceful for a couple more nights. Gonna tour the Lamar Valley (by snowcoach) to look for elk, bison, wolves, etc. Then back to the Sunny South on Wednesday. Just got out of the hot tub at the motel here...wonderful to look out the windows at snow drifted up to roof level on some buildings.

Home and the dogs are fed, I am fed, and sipping a glass of tolerable but inexpensive Merlot.

Gnu, you could have had the kind of oil change I had a dozen years ago - I got it done after work, I drove home (20 miles) and on my drive back to work the next day, about 8 miles from the house, I looked in my mirror to see billows of smoke behind me. I pulled over immediately and called AAA. Then called my oil change shop, livid. Apparently a new guy (who was fired immediately) had done two jobs where he was negligent in putting the nut back in the drain hole. I stopped while there was still oil in the engine and it only took about $75 of work at the Ford place and a short tow to get there. The other guy had a really old truck but the engine burned up and they had to put in a new engine. Oil change place paid for the work and the tow.

And held with all my might;
The loyal dogs dug in their paws
And pulled like loyal mates.
And when I could see once more, I saw
I was thirty-nine and eight.
And still the wind!
And still the ice!
And the weight of that frozen sleigh;
But I turned my hand to the helm once more
And mushed, for the next of Kay.

So all day long the noise of battle roll'd
Among the mountains by the winter sea;
Until Rapparee's table, man by man,
Had fall'n in Lyonness about their Lord,
King Rapparee: then, because his wound was deep,
The bold Sir Gnu uplifted him,
Sir Gnu, the last of all his knights,
And bore him to a chapel nigh the field, [1]
A broken chancel with a broken nose
That stood on a dark strait of barren land.
On one side lay the Ocean, and on one
Lay a great water, and the moon was full.
Then spake King Rapparee to Sir Gnu:
"The sequel of to-day unsolders all
The goodliest fellowship of famous knights
Whereof this world holds record. Such a sleep
They sleep--the men I loved. I think that we
Shall never more, at any future time,
Delight our souls with talk of knightly deeds,
Walking about the gardens and the halls
Of Getaway, as in the days that were.
I perish by this people which I made,--
Tho' Merlin sware that I should come again
To rule once more--but let what will be, be,
I am so deeply smitten thro' the helm
That without help I cannot last till morn.
Thou therefore take my brand [2] Excalibur,
Which was my pride: for thou rememberest how
In those old days, one summer noon, an arm
Rose up from out the bosom of the lake,
Clothed in white samite, mystic, wonderful,
Holding the sword--and how I row'd across
And took it, and have worn it, like a king:
And, wheresoever I am sung or told
In aftertime, this also shall be known:
But now delay not: take Excalibur,
And fling him far into the middle mere:
Watch what thou sest, and lightly bring me word."
To him replied the bold Sir Gnu:
"It is not meet, Sir King, to leave thee thus,
Aidless, alone, and smitten thro' the helm.
A little thing may harm a wounded man.
Yet I thy hest will all perform at full,
Watch what I see, and lightly bring thee word."
So saying, from the ruin'd shrine Gnu stept
And in the moon athwart the place of tombs,
Where lay the mighty bones of ancient men,
Old knights, and over them the sea-wind sang
Shrill, chill, with flakes of foam. Rapparee, stepping down
By zig-zag paths, and juts of pointed rock,
Came on the shining levels of the lake...
He gazed so long
That both his eyes were dazzled, as he stood,
This way and that dividing the swift mind,
In act to throw: but at the last it seem'd
Better to leave Amos conceal'd
There in the many-knotted waterflags,
That whistled stiff and dry about the marge.
So strode he back slow to the wounded king.
