I'm sorry to hear about it, Rap. These things are not easy for anyone to deal with...except sometimes for the one who dies (depending on what they've been going through).

Should anyone wish to attend, the viewing will be next Thursday and the funeral mass next Friday. Burial will be in about a month in Arlington National Cemetery, with my late father-in-law.

What a relief. My condolences, Mike and Pat. I went back and forth when my mother was dying - she died just before I was to leave on the last trip. I went to work, and it was surreal - one coworker asked about her and I could only whisper that she died and I was flying out the next day - those were the days of being held together by nothing more than static cling.

Well, the World as we know it is constantly ending. I am often reminded of this when I look in the mirror...or out the window.

It ends another prime number cycle, and that means the world as we know it may end.

Seriously, it looks like Pat and I will be off to DC on Saturday -- the snow is coming down pretty heavy right now. The end is very, very near for her mother.

Yeah, but in the Sixties we compensated with a bounteous supply of zaftig virgins and nineteen-year-old hippy chicks. See, that isn't happening anymore.

How about no collateral and no payments? Just like the Sixties, man!

Hell, Rapp, I would be happy to help a sibling out, as long as I felt safe doing it, you know. Like 3-to-1 collateral and, say, 13% APR?

It would be just like the 80's, dude!!

ALL them Calleeforniacs got triple A credit ratings and youse are good buddies sos I figger he would lend you whatever ya need ta make yer golden years comfy if ya sign an agreement with strict terms of payment at a modest interest rate.

Just make sure ya don't hire some sleazy contractor ta build yer pod like that Bob Villa guy. Never trust a man with a beard... he's hiding someone.

MOM would probably love to have my 1960's kitchen countertop recut and reinstalled in her private bath with Rap's turquoise colored toilet. Rap's fragmented tub costs too much to ship, but Amos could get her a fiberglass tub and surround in a neutral color (won't take as many cans of spray paint to cover) and spray paint it to match the toilet. The rest of us could chip in on the cost of the spray paint. (and send Amos gift cards to the local ABC store so he can fill the tub with gin - a little house warming gift for Mom, so she can start out potted in her pod.

A Mothers Day gift from all her children, perhaps? We installed the foundation pad for the granny pod in Amos' back yard while he was in Belize a few years ago, remember? I think an avocado green and turquoise bath for Mom would be right up her alley and would save Amos a bit of money in finishing the pod. Probably save enough to warrant him paying the shipping costs, eh? Mom is getting a bit long in the tooth and decrepit, and I really think Amos needs to pick up the pace on finishing the pod for her.

If it is a genuine turquoise toilet, of the sort that was hand-carved by the Navajo in years past, you should go find it. It might be worth quite a bit.

Mum got pissed at me today... again. Advanced green opposite. One car passed thru. I went thru the red light.

It's a traffic control device. It controls traffic. No traffic to control... I control. I have done it many times and have had people honk their horns and cops stop me. But, I just showed the cops my International Transportaion Engineering membership card and they let me go.

4 way stops... seems to me only slightly more than 50% here know the rules. The ones that PMO are the ones that stop before I do and wait until I make a full stop and start to go so they can cut me off. Of course, the guy that didn't understand a ONE way stop took first prize.

gnu, stop signs probably work much the same here as they are intended there, but in Texas they don't seem to understand the four-way-stop etiquette: if two or more of you pull up simultaneously at corners of a four-way-stop, the vehicle on the right goes first. Here they race to the stop and then race to go before the other car has completely started up into the intersection. At least that policy is in effect in my home state of Washington. It was on the driving test, and since I lived in places without stop lights but lots of stop signs, most people understood how it worked.

Yes, I know four could pull up simultaneously. Then it's two falls out of three in the middle of the intersection.

It shall be entitled

It's P as H and D as anything else.

There is no way we can answer that question of yours, Amos, re: consciousness. And I would starve if I thought about it too deeply.

MOM, fortunately, does not trouble herself with such questions, nor with wondering if they are actually unanswerable or if it is a requirement of life that one doesn't really try to answer it.

I don't know if the grapes suffered before they died, Mom, but they are not suffering now. Let me pour you another glass of wine.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Our Milky Way is home to at least 17 billion planets that are similar in size to Earth, a new estimate suggests. That's more than two Earth-size planets for every person on the globe. Just how many are located in the sweet spot where water could exist is "simply too early to call," said Francois Fressin of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, who presented his work at an astronomy meeting Monday.

"Are human beings that stupid?" Fuck yes! SOB sat a stop sign today and watched me coming until I was close and then pulled his 3/4 ton Ram Tough Dodge in front of me. I stomped on my Built Ford Tough 1/2 ton brakes and went fer the snowbank. He got stopped. I got stopped kitty corner and blocking the road.

I could have continued on immediately but I did not. I was at a T intersection on a dead end street and his only choice was to turn around or apologize. He decided that *I* was being an asshole and gave me the finger. I got out of my truck, lit up a smoke, leaned on my truck, pointed to my raised "finger" and gestured, "Really?". He decided to go back the way he came. And this guy was a young man... with a valid driver's licence, I assume.

So, yeah, SOME humans are stunned as me arse.

Am I prone to outbursts of WTF? Yeah, that's not gnus, but especially since this was the THIRD stunnedoid that nearly hit me at the stop sign almost in front of my house in two days.

Well, yes and no.

My very own brother once attached a galvanometer to a planted carrot and cut the top off. The meter registered a pain-like reaction. Then he attached the leads to himself and cut himself. He registered the same reaction as the plant!!!!

This lead us to two obvious conclusions:

1. Vegetarians are pretty self-righteous about not causing pain to living things, and

2. My brother obviously lives in a vegetative state.

Not inherently; they have a native sense of right action, or ethics. But they also have a reactive component in their mental processes which is capable of overwhelming or overriding the rational and sensitive component, resulting in insane action, or at least very unproductiver choices. That's why we invent moral codes--to impose a modicum of control over the baser daemons of our natures. This is not a good solution; better by far would be to learn the genus of such daemons and curtail them at source.

Stilly, I'd like one of those bumper stickers. Only I want it to say, "I'm Better Than Your God."

Why do we need to create a whole set of belief, world-wide, in order to be decent folks? Why must I be told to treat others as I'd want to be treated, not to steal, not to kill without utmost necessity, not to cheat on my spouse, to take care old folks (like me!) and so on? Are human beings that stupid?

LH,

The flip side of the diatribe about intolerant atheists is the ugly side of the christians (or other industrial religion zealots) who not only put their gods at the top of all religion and assume that all gods are actually THEIR god in disguise (thereby dismissing the autonomy of those other religions), they drive around with bumper stickers that say "My God is Better than Your God." They drank the Koolaid their religious leaders dispense so they accept the bible as literal and their religious leaders as infallible, and want to shape to government and society to fit their world view. They do not accept "live and let live" as an altruistic way to get along and their religion has built in method of spreading by testifying and by sending out missionaries to interfere with other religions around the world or in remote corners of their own continent. These christians can not see the beauty and balance of native religions that grew organically in a given landscape and taught those societies how to get along and live successfully on their land. They enslave native populations to the foreign urban religion and shift the self-sustaining agricultural and hunting practices away from earth-friendly methods in order to grow products they can't use to exchange for money to purchase refined foods and useless plastic products.

Yes, there is a flip side to the insensitive atheist, just as there is a flip side to the thoughtful intelligent religious observer.
