I don't know but it's certainly possible. Aside from these few friends, I am not strongly connected inside the UCSD bubble.

Interesting, Amos! I know a prof John Miles but of a different subject at a different university. Probably not the same guy. But small world, with the same name. Maybe they know of each other.

What an evening, Mom!! We drove up the road to the Faculty Club and sat in on the 90th Birthday party for our beloved Harold, the physicist who became the vice-chancellor of the University here. We got to talk physics withDmitri Barsov, the sweet-tempered Russian who chairs the physics department, and meet a whole mess of very Distinguished Souls. And drink champagne and good red wine, and have a jolly time with their families as well. What a hoot. I am glad to be home again.

MOM!! Did you know that from 1550, the earliest part of the Baroque era, to the Galante era which bridged into the CLassical period in the last third of the 18th century, there were over EIGHT HUNDRED AND EIGHTY known Baroque composes? Didja?? You want a list of them all? All 880 of them breathed and sighed, peed and farted and learned music with ferocious attention. All of them yearned, dreamed, slept, waned and died. And how many of their names do you know? Maybe six? Eight? Huh? I have a list.

Just think, less than one per cent of the composers of this remarkable school.

From Oshkosh out to frozen Nome
In every farm and store and home
The MOAB's watchers piss and moan
"That Hawkster stole a palindrome!"

I heard that Shane had to get a cast put on his "Little Dipper" after an excessively indulgent weekend spent with a stolen laptop...

I dunno how much of Rapparree's stuff is real and how much is delusion. Right now he's claiming to have been put in a cast. Next thing you know he'll tell us he's been a thespian for all these years.

Oh, thank you for the edified rectification of my presumptuous and erroneous ways, Rapparee. It is SO good to know you are there always watching over us.

Righto. I was aware of the birth control connection, Amos, but not of the other. That's why I was a bit puzzled by Stilly's post. Thanks for clearing that up.

The notion of accepting the lambskin dates back centuries and has two meanings. One, used here by our estimable and deservedly proud mother Stilly, is to willingly receive a diploma, of the kind that was once printed on lambskin before parchment was used, before the days of 8 1/2/x11 copier paper.

The other has no place in decent conversation, and refers to a method of birth control.

And Moonglow, congratulations on your success!! All of MOAB toasts your diligence and perseverance!!

Before someone raises their hand and shouts "who's there?" I want to point out that my lovely, talented, and brilliant daughter, Moonglow (in her rare Mudcat appearances) is now OFFICIALLY a college graduate! She accepted the lambskin this evening in a ceremony with +/- 700 of her closest campus friends. We drove back to town and went out for dinner in downtown Fort Worth. When she was a wee babe (18 mos) we moved here and at that time, downtown rolled up the sidewalks at 5pm. Now it's a vibrant and crowded scene. Good place to go for a family celebration of this sort.

Back to the Knock Knock game.

You've had the qualifying experience all the way there and back. Why, even your disingenuous question is a classic example of the art, in its quieter style.

There is only The One--irremediable, and unRapaireable
Who from the heaven's brow did spring, full-armed
And with a look that mortals find unbearablest of looks
Did stride into the world to Speake of Booques.
Leaving his mortal peers all full-alarmed.

But when his arms did meet their fate at last
Through helpful gestures made in aimless aid,
His peers did him impose a giant Caste
Of finest perlite plaster grains all made.

These grains each one, like pages were but small
But like a mighty BOoke when gathered all,
By tens and scores and thousands made the charm
That held him fast, and Rapaired good his Arme.

You are as Mercutio, putting on a dramatic display of feigned outrage for the benefit of those worthies standing about you in the street whilst snickering down your sleeve at the common follies of impressionable men. You are as Cyrano, spouting marvelous verse beneath the fair lady's balcony, whilst concealed in the bushes.

Why does my ass have mass?

Because it does. To suggest that my ass has inertia due to a force which surrounds it and impedes me from getting off the LazyBoy to get another beer during the football game is empirically inane to me.

However, if this theory is proven correct, it may have practical applications like having the beer float to me unimpeded by the molasses so that I don't have to get up and get a beer and miss Brady connect with The Gronk fer a TD.

Is there a particular research foundation I should donate to in order to further such ground breaking studies?

Yes, F=MA for most values of F :D but the question is why there is M, the resistance to acceleration in individual particles.

In people, it is sui-generis.

How'd ya make out Rap?

A... I had not addressed the Fitzgerald contraction proposition. Again, initially, it's seems empirically incorrect. The bus gets taller, wider and longer as it's coming to pick me up.

My view of the bus, if I miss it, gets shorter, more narrow and less wide while I am waving and swearing.

Again, I prefer comedy.

Comedy... hmmm... once upon a time... while heading for a hunt, my cousin, the aerospace engineer and I were discussing tau sheer in the bonding of carbon composite skins for stealth aircraft and it became fairly lengthy and deeply involved. My buddy, in the back seat of the vehicle finally piped up, "Hey! I am deaf in my right ear and all this shit is going in my left ear and getting stuck in my head so knock it off eh?" Oh how we laughed.

Gnu--I don't understand why the Lorenz contraction seems right along the axis of acceleration and not in other dimensions. But it is similar in some respects to the much better known Doppler effect in sound when a car or train goes by and changes the pitch of the sound. Like this.

"... The question is, where does this resistance come from?..."

Inertia f = m * a... no?

"... by proving that the speed of light is the same for all observers, regardless of their relative motion."

This proof emperically says to me that c is constant. That is, that c is not dependent upon the observer. IF the challenge addresses the observers' perception, I initially find it emperically incorrect... what if I am travelling at c - 1 and you are stationary? Would our perceptions not differ? Or is there a point of reference for each observer upon which to judge c?

Having stated and asked those, I really don't give two shits from Tuesday although I do enjoy The Big Bang Theory TV sitcom. I'd rather watch a light-hearted comedy ABOUT physics than take physics.

Lorentz-FitzGerald contraction, also called space contraction , in relativity physics, is the shortening of an object along the direction of its motion relative to an observer. Dimensions in other directions are not contracted. The concept of the contraction was proposed by the Irish physicist George FitzGerald in 1889, and it was thereafter independently developed by Hendrik Lorentz of the Netherlands.

The Michelson-Morley experiment in the 1880s had challenged the postulates of classical physics by proving that the speed of light is the same for all observers, regardless of their relative motion. FitzGerald and Lorentz attempted to preserve the classical concepts by demonstrating the manner in which space contraction of the measuring apparatus would reduce the apparent constancy of the speed of light to the status of an experimental artifact.

There will be a quiz.

It will be open-head.

"The mass of a particle, much like the mass of a truck, is the resistance you'd feel were you to push on it. The question is, where does this resistance come from? The answer, according to Higgs's idea, is that all of space is filled with an invisible substance — the Higgs field — which acts kind of like a pervasive molasses, exerting a drag force as particles try to accelerate through it. The "stickier" a particle is, the more the molasses-like Higgs field affects it, and the more massive the particle appears.

The emptiest of empty space, vacuumed clean of matter and radiation, would still be permeated by the Higgs field. Higgs thus suggested a rewriting of the very definition of nothingness, filling otherwise empty space with a substance capable of bestowing upon particles their mass".

I jus6t don't see why this is so compelling in contrast to the dismissal of the luminiferous aether. It makes me go "What the fuck?". This is why I am not a physicist.

As I have pointed out, Amos, you are yourself an imaginary construction, a self-created ego shell that prances about on the stage of life launching witty verbal shafts such as "jejune" and using fashionably outdated phrases such as "I swan" to reduce others to stunned silence as you bury them under an avalanche of equisitely crafted sesquipdelia.

As such, you act out an interesting and entertaining role to be sure, and one which I think has added color and amusement to our world, but never, sir, NEVER imagine that you are any realer than the various "fictional" characters I have created. You just seem realer in this specific vibratory spectrum we inhabit, that's all, but on the streets of Chongo's Chicago you would seem ghostly, insubstantial, a mere phantasm drifing eerily on the wind, soon to vanish like a puff of smoke.
