There's my old childhood library, the Everett Public. Great children's librarians in there--opened a world of reading for me, even as a child from a librarian's family. It was/is in an old Carnegie library building. And the B'ham library--didn't go there often when I was in college, but I used it a few times.

I'm really worried about Amos, what with the recent train wrecks and all. I'd really had to see Amos go to Getaway and get wrecked.

Mom, you need a lift. You'll be glad to know that we've got some GOOD pictures of the woman who stole the purse at the Library yesterday.

Seems like the stuff that was posted yesterday was the old data, not the new. The previous is the new data, comparing us (Marshall Public) with others around the region in the same population group.

It's still good.

"he attributed it to the faeries at the bottom of his garden"

Finally some honesty! Rapaire is a forthright man with the courage to state it like it is and let the buffalo chips fall where they may. That is why Chongo picked him for his VP. No wonder Katie Couric was a bit flummoxed. After all, it's very unusual for politicians to tell the unvarnished truth about anything when they are being interviewed. She probably needed a stiff drink and some deep breathing to recover from the shock.

But is the American public ready to hear the Truth?

Chongo is betting that they are.

"In a recent interview with CBS' Katie Couric, the suddenly famous library director was asked the secret of his success. Much to the surprise of listeners in every walk of American life, he attributed it to the faeries at the bottom of his garden. Ms. Couric, for perhaps the first time in her professional career, was completely non-plussed and was forced to take an unscheduled commercial break to recover herself."

Adieu, friends and MOABites. I leave in a few hours for the trials and tribulations of air travel in Bush's America. It is slightly better than traveling by schooner to the Hawaiian islands to start a missionary career in 1871, but not by much.

WHOOPEE!!! YAY!!!

Hurray for us! Hennen's American Public Library Ratings has come out for 2008 (based on 2005 date that the Feds released late) and my Library is ranked, once again, tops in Idaho for cities of 50-99K population!

Marshall Public Library: score 665, 76.6%
Meridan Public: 627, 70.5%
Idaho Falls: 621, 69.6%
Nampa: 592, 64.4%
Kootenai-Shoshone District: 524, 53.4%

I am somewhat pleased. Perhaps you can tell.

Take the white part of chicken droppings and dry it. Give one teaspoonful at every meal to cure fits.

To prevent cramps while swimming, rub urine all over your body before entering the water.

Chamber lye is very good for cramps.

Melt hog manure on the stove and let it get quite cold. Put a few drops of turpentine on it. Cures the worst case of piles.

Grind dried chicken dung into a powder and put a pinch of it into a prune. Give this to anyone with hysterics.

Poultice gout with a mixture of goat milk butter and cow manure.

Lose freckles by washing them with your own urine.

If you want to take off freckles, cover your face with cow manure.

If your hogs have cholera, put chamber lye in the slop.

As soon as possible after stepping on a nail, put the foot in a bucket of fresh cow manure.

dung was collected for the fields - but "white dung" (the aged dung of dogs was especially prized) was also used in leather making and papermaking

Yes, urine has many practical uses. Dung, on the other hand, has only a few...unless you are a dachshund, in which case it is a vital "beauty" ingredient that they search out in order to give themselves that special "something" that sets them apart from the common herd.

Gives a whole new meaning to the song "Goober Peas", doesn't it?

Sittin' by the roadside on summer day
Chattin' with my messmates, passin' time away
Standin' in the shadows, underneath the trees
Goodness how delightful, takin' good ol' pees!

Pees, pees, pees, pees, takin' good ol' pees
Goodness how deligtful takin' good ol' pee!

Just before the battle the General hears a row,
"I think the Yanks are comin', I hear their cannons' now!"
Just then he turns around and whadda think he sees?
The Georgia militia, takin' good ol' pees!

Stale urine was used extensively in the past, Amos. "Chamber lye," as it was called, was used as a cosmetic face wash, a shampoo, and even in the making of saltpeter for gunpowder.

IT is a major omission in most period movies, as to how these matters were dealt with. I noticed how surprised I was watching a film about aristocrats in Sicily at the time of Garibaldi's uprising. There was a fancy dress ball going on, and one shot followed a gentleman into the restroom where he was prettying himself up. Over his shoulder you could see into a back room which was lined with lovely tall china collection bowls, each of which was brimming with human urine. It was a shock to realize what you were seeing.

Thank god for flush toilets.

My brother and I always wanted to re-enact night soil collectors in a restored village.

A cart, a couple of barrels partially filled with...night soil..., a couple long handled shovels, and a certain business odor and we'd be all set.

Just picture the tourists at Colonial Williamsburg, say, coming out of the restaurants on Duke of Gloucester Street, their bellies full and them full of good cheer, being greeted with a noisome cart being pulled by two filthy, stinking, guys crying, "Night soil! Night soil! We'll take all the shit you can give! Clean out yer privy, guv? Only tuppence!"

There was a desert culture in Sonora, Mexico that after eating the cactus fruit everyone took care of business in a certain area. And after a while it was dried enough to be sifted through for the seeds.

I'm not entirely sure I do get your drift, Stilly, but it sounds interesting. I think people in the present culture are mostly far more squeamish about their own bodily functions than they need to be. Some people are downright obsessive about it, matter of fact. I don't know what the problem is, but I suspect it goes back to their toilet training or something.

To put it bluntly, they can't deal with their own shit, because they're so afraid of it! ;-) That can be interpreted either literally or metaphorically, needless to say.

LH, there is an essay I want you to read in Gathering the Desert, by an acquaintance of mine, Gary Paul Nabhan. It discusses food production and where people go. In the same essay. Has to do with scouring the hulls off of cactus seeds with whatever intestinal tracts were available. If you get my drift.

Indians didn't have that problem. They shat fairly much as animals do, when and where the moment required, and the whole natural world was the "outhouse". No Indian was so stupid as to make a little tiny building that you go in to shit because that concentrates all the shit on one tiny piece of ground, and that's not good. You just end up with a hell of a mess there eventually when you do that, and it doesn't benefit the general environment...it often poisons the water supply. Shit needs to be spread around some on the surface ground, not concentrated in one little spot.

They did, though, have a lot more open land available than we do. I'll grant that. And it wasn't all divided up into little bits owned by this or that person. It was all in effect public land. That's natural socialism for you! ;-) No wonder they were regarded as an impediment to "civilization". You can't get rich buying and selling land if it's owned in common by everybody, can you?

Yes, alas, I shall sing my songs alone, alone and unheard by any but the coyotes, the wolves, the pumas, the bears, the deer, the elk, and the stars which sweep across the night sky like a cascade of lights falling and dancing like a brook that winds its way singing and skipping over stones to the sea.

No Getaway for me again this year. Again this year I shall sit here in my mountain fastness and let my soul chant the melodies of the Universe and sing of the vastness of that which is Human:

Please don't burn our shit-house down,
Mother has promised to pay.
Father's away on the ocean wave
And sister's in the family way.

Brother dear has gonorrhea
And times is fucking hard;
So please don't burn our shit-house down
Or we'll all have to shit in the yard.

Let's see: tomorrow I have a capital campaign meeting.
Wednesday I have to be in Idaho Falls, first for a Consortium meeting and then for the first of the Idaho Library Association.
Thursday I'll check out of the motel, attend the ILA meetings and the Awards Banquet and drive home, arriving about 10 p.m.
Friday I have to attend a Chamber of Commerce luncheon.
Saturday I have the "Big Read" kickoff in the evening, where I have to give a short talk to folks who include a Pulitzer prize winning author, the Mayor, the wife of the Governor, and the head of the National Endowment for the Arts.

Of course, yesterday I was down at the Library at 9 a.m. to investigate and repair the front door that had been shot out and in the evening had to tell the Masons how I could rebuild the town with a little water, a piece of string, and my mind (and why they wouldn't have to go through all that trouble).

Gee, I'd like to Getaway. But unlike Some People We Know, I have some real work to do....
