I'm back! Amos, you forgot "peripatetic."

Looks like I'm going to have to pull out the old Halicrafter and check out the vacuum tubes to contribute to this latest topic.

There are also a few items to catch up on. Looks like kibby F-5 is up to speed. It won't hurt the MOM to visit with Dave Barry on occasion. :) I would also like to call your attention to the Pulitzer laureate Horsey on the west coast.

Last full day in NYC we were walking down the west side of Manhattan in the park there. Spotted a great water park for tots, then a few blocks later, spotted a dog park, and got a great idea. They had a couple of wading pools set up, and the dogs were finding all sorts of reasons to take their tennis balls into the pools to cool off. An "aha! moment" occured. First thing when I got home yesterday, I hauled out the wading pool and filled it a few inches. Put the dog in, told her to sit, then to lie down. She started to roll over and caught on real quick. This morning she's leaping around the yard, chasing plastic balls, and leaping in and out of the pool. It's supposed to be 101 today.

First find the tolerance band, it will typically be gold ( 5%) and sometimes silver (10%).

Starting from the other end, identify the first band - write down the number associated with that color; in this case Blue is 6.

Now 'read' the next color, here it is red so write down a '2' next to the six. (you should have '62' so far.)

Now read the third or 'multiplier' band and write down that number of zeros.

In this example it is two so we get '6200' or '6,200'. If the 'multiplier' band is Black (for zero) don't write any zeros down.

If the 'multiplier' band is Gold move the decimal point one to the left. If the 'multiplier' band is Silver move the decimal point two places to the left. If the resistor has one more band past the tolerance band it is a quality band.

Read the number as the '% Failure rate per 1000 hour' This is rated assuming full wattage being applied to the resistors. (To get better failure rates, resistors are typically specified to have twice the needed wattage dissipation that the circuit produces) 1% resistors have three bands to read digits to the left of the multiplier. They have a different temperature coefficient in order to provide the 1% tolerance.

At 1% most error is in the temperature coefficent - ie 20ppm.

1. Mom? I think I may have done a no-no bragging about my visitation from GG. I just had a really long, really involved post (to *that* thread - I will admit) disappear into the aether.

The Great Mystery: Why does soft-serve pseudo ice cream give one a much more severe case of "ice cream headache" or "brain freeze" than real ice cream? I can eat regular ice cream by the wheelbarrow-load with no headache, but squirt a little vanilla soft-serve onto a slice of apple pie at some AYCE buffet and I soon remember why I usually have banana pudding. It can't just be a matter of temperature. Heck, most home freezers keep ice cream at 0°F. Maybe they put some kind of chemical additive in the stuff that causes headaches and makes people not want to go back for seconds?

as ReMOAT entered The Puberty of Life.
More beer and MOATaritas went around, in volume.
All Life celebrated the Remote ReMOAT. ROAD TRIP!
The ReMOAT is all things Penguin Thong, Coconut Bra and Yahoo.
Then The Titans showed up and said,
"BeGone Again! Check into the MOATelle! And bring your stuff!"

MOATies come and MOATies go.

And the Father Dave glanced at the MOATelle and said, "Ah, again!"

A New Zealand man is resisting demands to take down hundreds of women's bras strung on his farm's fence, according to a Local 6 News report.

"It was probably a novelty for the first six months but I think it's passed and we need to move on," said chairman Bill Gordon. "This town has got lot of Japanese students who get educated here. They are very offended by it as a lot of Asian cultures, South Africans."

For years, women returning from a pub in the nearby town of Wanaka have stopped at the fence and removed their bras.

A local sheep farmer, John Lee, has become the unofficial guardian of the site.

"They have got a magic quality about them, bras," Lee said. "For me, they have all my life."

Women have recently added their own to the fence, gaining the property worldwide publicity.

However, the Wanaka Community Board believes some locals are fed up with the unlikely tourist attraction and want it taken down.

No, in the case of Freds, they shuffle through subway stations rattling cups to collect change, or lounge outside buildings with odd objects scattered around them. It's guaranteed to have them formally NOT noticed by almost everyone.

The Ralphs are more apparent. You find them in the form of middle-aged Chinese women who stand and say insulting things to your face in Chinese when you didn't notice a part of the sign for the price of individual lichees (don't want to buy a pound, just a couple? Offer a coin and have her point at a smudge on a taped cardboard sign and begin the muttering). Har! sounds different in Chinese, but I couldn't begin to type it for you here.

Off to the waterfront this morning.

Back in the apartment, it's late, and last time I looked at that blister, it was half-again as big as the toe it's under. Moonglow is now up to a knee brace (picked up two days ago), moleskin, bandaids, blister pads, and as of this afernoon, an ankle brace. She's hanging in there, but will no doubt limp onto the plane on Tuesday.

I think the Freds have been here in New York City. And the Ralphs. They're disguised as tourists. Clever of them!

Hello from the Big Apple, Amos, Rapaire, BWL and all! I would have rescued mom from the nether regions of the page had I been home to do so. But I was in Brooklyn with my daughter eating Lebonese food then walking around the promenade at Brooklyn Heights. I'm in Manhattan now, testing out the new keyboard, mouse, and monitor I've purchased for the friend who is letting us stay at his apartment in the north end of Greenwich Village (14th St. at 7th Ave.). He isn't here now, he left for a few days, so these are a surprise. He bought a new computer 18 months ago, but kept the old peripherals to use. His old monitor was from sometime around the mid-1990s and his keyboard was practically Neanderthal. His mouse didn't have a wheel for scrolling, just the old two-button mouse job. The cost of this gift is that of a modest hotel for a few nights, not even covering the entire time we're here. He is going to go ballistic before he falls in love with this stuff, but by then I'll be back in Fort Worth. His old monitor was a horror, dark, not adjustible. The keyboard had no media controls (I found one that has a few discreetly placed buttons along the top).

Keep mom afloat! I won't be on the computer often until mid-week.
