Well, I guess that is better than being humiliated by your pride, huh?

Absolutely! That is, departing from the so lutely.

Back when I was a tad, we used to go to church and then march around the block in a procession, praying the Litany of the Saints in Latin. These were called "Rogation Days" (if we'd prayed for our hair to be restored they would have been called "Rogaine Days"). Since this isn't done any more, are those days now Abrogation Days?

Rapaire:

If you stand by them, then you are on one leg, an Ahab of Ab, lacking understanding. As for Rustic's bra that is between her and the worshippers of the Golden Curve. I have it on good authority, however, that it not an impediment when she is posting to our sacred Mother.

What of the "AB" in "MOAB"? Or "Abra-cadabra? Or is that "A bra, Cad, a bra!"
And what of Rustic Rebel's bra? Why have we not discussed this? Do bees also infringe upon it as well? Does it have fringe? Is it lunatic fringe?
When will we, collectively speaking, get there? Are we there yet?
Who's driving this rig, anyway?

Khnerdnard who is aslo Tweege

Legal Latin ain't real Latin, or at least it's not the Latin I learned back when Latin was the "in" language to learn. I am aware that it bears the same relationship to the tongue of Ceasare and Cicero that Liturgical Latin does, i.e., not much at all. Nevertheless, I stand by the assertions I made ab initio.

Amos, admit it: you're just flexing your abs.

I believe you mean RES LOQUITUR IPSA (or, RES IPSA LOQUITUR). The matter speaks for itself. --Cicero, Pro Milone, 53

Abdominal: away from the dominal. Actually, it means relating to the belly, from the Latin word for belly, which was abdomen, possibly the part placed away or concealed.

Absurd: departing from the surd. Actually ab- here has a different meaning, as an intensifier, compounded with surdus Latin, deaf.

Abrogate: leaving the rogate. Actually more along the lines of "to do away with" from ab- (away) and rogare (to request or ask).

Abnormal: away from the not apples (or, perhaps, the evil). Actually "normal" comes from the concept "made according tot he square" from a Latin word for a carpenter's square, normalis. Abnormal is "off-square", not plumb.

Abbreviation: departing from the breviation. Actually a condensation of the compound of "ad-" and "brevire", to shorten. In this sense ad- is an intensifier.

Aboriginal: departing from the original. Actually "from the beginning", a Latin mythological reference to peoples whose history is lost in prehistory. Ab- plus "origine", beginning.

From the Free Dictionary:

Ab-

1. A prefix in many words of Latin origin. It signifies from, away , separating, or departure, as in abduct, abstract, abscond. See A-(6).

See? See? Repent, Rapaire!! Thou shalt not prevail!!

Ab oro. From the very beginning. Stasnos, in the epic poem called the Little Iliad, does not rush in medias res, but begins with the eggs of Leda, from one of which Helen was born. If Leda had not laid this egg, Helen would never have been born. If Helen had not been born, Paris could not have eloped with her. If Paris had not eloped with Helen, there would have been no Trojan War, etc.
Ab ovo usque ad mala. From the first dish to the last. A Roman cœna (dinner) consisted of three parts. The first course was the appetiser, and consisted chiefly of eggs, with stimulants; the second was the "dinner proper;" and the third the dessert, at which mla (i.e., all sorts of apples, pears, quinces, pomegrauates, and so on) formed the most conspicuous part.
   —Hor. Sat. I. iii. 5.

Thus, with little effort, one more meaning to the sturdy foundation building block, ab-. Repent, sirrah!

Sir,

I beg to inform you that my "knowledge of knowledge is encyclopedic" -- this was attested to in an article in no lesser publication than The South Bend Tribune (in 1991 -- copies available upon request and the receipt of a same fee to cover postage & handling). There are no "lacunae" in my knowlege -- only blastulae.

Ab, a prefix meaning "not", as in "abnormal."
Original, a word meaning original.

Does "aboriginal" mean "pertaining to aborigines" or "not original?" Or both?

It is sometimes valuable to emphasize what is important as the river of dross gallops toward certain obscurity. This, then, should be the true Slogan of the MOAB:

For what is real, and what is aboriginal, cannot be fucked with.

And it is only in recognizing this deep truth from Downstairs that we of MOAB can proceed fucking with everything else under the sun in the good name of MOAB and BS everywhere.

*The fact that ketchup (or catsup) is considered "king" in Idaho should in no way be understood to reflect negatively on King Khandu, who is also Tweed. The term "king" in this context is a hyperbolic expression used to indicate the importance Idahoers attach to this condiment as opposed to, say, Grey Poopon mustard.

Way out West, where the taters grow
Way out West, where ketchup's king*
Way out West, they made a new thing.

Took some ketchup an' some mayoNASE
Mixed 'em together with the greatest of aize
Took it down to Macdonald's 'n' ordered some fries
Dipped the fries in the...stuff...'n' ate it.

Way out West, in Idaho
Way out West, where masochists grow
Way out West, where they made Fry Dip
Way out West, where their taste buds slip.

Yeah, they call it Fry Dip and it's a local thing
Sometimes classic, sometimes with zing,
They dip french fries, even eat it on bread --
Ain't you glad you ain't way out West, in Idaho?

Grad Student Soup

As much ketchup as you have or can get from the little packets in restaurants.

Hot Water

Mix the ketchup in the hot water. Serve in a styrofoam cup, coffee mug, bowl, or the pan you heated the water in. Eat with crackers or bread or stuff in it, if you have any.

Spaghetti With Out Sauce

Uncooked spaghetti

Boiling water

Put the spaghetti in the water. Boil it until it is soft. Pour off the water. Eat the spaghetti.

(For a gourmet thrill, squeeze little packets of ketchup on it for spaghetti sauce.)

American Heritage On Line offers:

VARIANT FORMS: also catch·up ( kchp, kch-) or cat·sup ( ktsp,   kchp, kch-)

NOUN: A condiment consisting of a thick, smooth-textured, spicy sauce usually made from tomatoes.

ETYMOLOGY: Probably Malay kicap, fish sauce, possibly from Chinese (Cantonese) k-chap, equivalent to Chinese (Mandarin) qié, eggplant + Chinese (Mandarin) zh, sap, gravy.

WORD HISTORY: The word ketchup exemplifies the types of modifications that can take place in borrowing—both of words and substances. The source of our word ketchup may be the Malay word kchap, possibly taken into Malay from the Cantonese dialect of Chinese. Kchap, like ketchup, was a sauce, but one without tomatoes; rather, it contained fish brine, herbs, and spices. Sailors seem to have brought the sauce to Europe, where it was made with locally available ingredients such as the juice of mushrooms or walnuts. At some unknown point, when the juice of tomatoes was first used, ketchup as we know it was born. But it is important to realize that in the 18th and 19th centuries ketchup was a generic term for sauces whose only common ingredient was vinegar. The word is first recorded in English in 1690 in the form catchup, in 1711 in the form ketchup, and in 1730 in the form catsup. All three spelling variants of this foreign borrowing remain current.

1 bushel dark but juicy black walnut hulls
1 gallon vinegar
1/2 kilogram dried habanero peppers, stemmed but with the seeds
1 liter dark 151 proof rum

Layer the walnut hulls, vinegar and peppers in a cider press and slooooooooooooowly squeeze out all the juice you can over three or four days. Do not collect this juice in anything, but let it run into the ground. While watching the juice drain, drink the rum.
