Colin Powell was never an astronaut, villein. He was, however, a very, very good general and, had he not been lied to, would perhaps have been our best ever Secretary of State.

It was Colin Powell's fault, Mister Book. He decided to become an astronaut.

Jig? The dance, or the workshop device, or what? And why would any of them be up? I suppose if one were to, say, dance a jig on the floor above someone else the "jig would be up".

Please to explain, good sirrah.

Your Shield of Obsessive Rightness and your Blader of Disingenuity will not help you now, Rapparee! The jig is up, man!!

Why, Amos, are you calling Eiseley a villain? She a nice person, most of the time.

There are three ways I can think of: Use a very small breadpan; make small loaves; cut very thick slices, like two per loaf. There might be other ways, too.

How do they bake all that bread that only has heels in the loaf? I've tried and tried but never succeeded.

Here, MOM, whether we are all just part of You or not, I'm sure you'd like this delicious bowl of French onion soup with a heel of crusty bread and some melted cheese on top.

MOM is with us all wherever we may go; a mother never leaves. This I know from hard experience. We are within Her; and her word is our very breath, and is the Word of BS. Let us rejoice in it. What choice do we have? Would you have us be Deluded?

Did MOM ever say she doesn't like to travel? How come she never goes on these trips with anyone?

Well it is a damn thing they didn't; once was more than sufficient. Besides it would have been a world record and caused you to have a swollen head.

By the way, Mom -- I'm where the Snake Falls Twice. I visited Geronimo's town, visited the stoned horses, and seen the conditions interns used live under. Tomorrow we hope to visit the petrified town and see where the spike was put. We shall overnight near the corporate headquarters of Browning Firearms and go home on Monday.

That's so true, Amos. I remember well the pain I had when I was born -- it wasn't MY idea. There I was, warm, nourished, not a care in the world and the next thing I knew it was very bright, cold, and somebody whumped my butt and I didn't even do anything yet. So I peed all over the delivery room staff. Lemme tell ya, they never had ME born again!

Pain is a complex, multi-faceted beast; it can come from sympathetic links across parts of the body, it can come from memories of times past and long forgotten, and it can come from current stress with no apparent connection -- working with someone who is a pain in the ass can give you an earache, for example. And putting your foot in your mouth can cause heart palpitations. How strange is that?

Hope it turns out. The GE I saw a while back said a pain in the guts can be hard to find... you can feel pain in one spot and it may be actually being caused by sommat elsewhere in the guts. I once traced a leak in a roof of a Ferry Terminal building some 200 feet from ceiling stains and drips to the ingress point and it took two months... every time it would rain I would get more clues. Hope it takes your doc 2 minutes or less.

My son has an occasional mystery gut pain. We've tried to get a diagnosis by getting him to the emergency room when it happens. A couple of times ago the doctor was all set to remove his appendix. "But it happens every so often," we told the doctor. "Well, think of it this way, next time you could rule out appendicitis."

Nope. Not a good enough reason to cut up my kid. We passed on the surgery, and the NEXT time it happened and we tried again the woman agreed - appendicitis doesn't come and go. We went to see a gastro guy and he has a medication to help stop the gut spasms if that happens, but even he didn't have an answer, except sometimes this happens. They think it isn't tied with migraine any more, but I have my suspicions.

MOM, good to see you're up and around today. The kids were letting you sleep in late, I guess. Rise and shine, and have some eggs and bacon, but careful on the bacon, it's really salty this time.

No fever.

There's a branch of flowering dogwood blooming in my house. I plucked it from my grandmother's yard last weekend and I hope it will send off some rootlets.

Kidney stone? Kid knee...nah. My wife once had a kinked ureter. In the mean time, drink lots of water.

BTW, the appendix is USUALLY on the right but it can be 'most anywhere in the intestinal cavity. If you also have a fever, hie thee to the doctor NOW!

You haven't been eating any raw European veggies, have you?

The limpid limpet limped into the limelight.

At the moment, that limpet would be me. If the pain were on my right side, I would suspect appendicitis. But it's not. It's on the left. I'm going to go to the doctor on Wednesday unless it gets worse, and then I'll go earlier.

Just thought I'd check in.

Eiseley

If you soak a limmer in water and add sugar do you get limmerade? Is this where the name of the city of Limerick came from? And the poetical form? Is someone who trims trees a limmer?

Amos, you have opened a can of secrets and inquiring minds need to know things!

The word itself can be used as an adjective: Yon Penelope hath a lean and limmer look. Relative: limmerer, limmerest. Adverb: limmer-like, limmerly?

So the adjectival form would be "limmerish" and the adverbial would "limmerly"?

Like in "It would be limmerly to have some of that limmerish in the candy store."

Sorry to have been away for so long, MOM, but I see the other kids have kept you entertained with their exploits. I hope Eiseley used her mp3 player to record the concert so you could listen back on headphones. And that no personal sounds like burps or snores came across form nearby concert patrons.

Gotta get back to scanning. I'm reading the instructions for Adobe Acrobat. Amazing how well that works, when making random choices among features I don't understand doesn't work.

With all the bustle and hustle going on in the busy world, you would think a great deal more would be getting done, wouldn't you? All the human effort it takes to keep things as they have been, and not make waves, and keep others purposes from blossoming--it's an incredible amount of dissipated heat and horsepower.

Oh some there are more fat than Mom,
And some who are much trimmer;
But we can say with great aplomb,
Our Mom, she ain't no limmer.

Today's word, in association with the remarkable Oxford English Dictionary, is

limmer (n. & adj.)

n. (1) A rogue, scoundrel. Obs.
(2) Applied to a woman.
(a) A light woman; a strumpet.
(b) In weaker sense: A jade, hussy, minx.
adj. Knavish, scoundrelly.

Used in a sentence in 1828 by Walter Scott:

"There have been a proper set of limmers about to scale your windows, father Simon."

I see you know your langours; The monotonous langour is the most common, but there are the occasional sightings, (if you are lucky) of the sultry langour.

The monotonous languor is a subspecies of the lemur family found mainly in the suburbs of Madagascar. It has a gray, bland coat, and is usually of average height and weight; it has the usual-length tail and a fairly normal set of behaviors. Its mating cry, feeding cry, tribe-alert cry, hunting call, and food-gathering call are all identical, consisting of one medium-length tone in midrange, sent out at average speed repeating at normal intervals without variation or interruption from sunrise to sunset. The monotonous languor has never broken out of its initial island environment, and is not given generally to any heroic or unusual efforts. It is not often hunted, being hard to see against the usual background and having no salient features or coloration.

Good heavens! Some people get up early!

Monotonous "Tony" Languor lived down the street from us when I was growing up. Nice kid, but always dressed in gray and spoke in a monotone. Never did anything much except sit around with a glass of gray Kool-Aid and read black & white comic books. Then, about the age of 14, he discovered girls and things changed. First he started wearing pink shirts and poodle skirts, but quickly discovered his mistake and wore simple white blouses with "Peter Pan" collars. I think he got a job, years later, with the singing group "The Village People."
