Ahem. I have just toured the Lincoln Presidential Museum. Got in free 'cause me and Abe were tight, baby. I mean, like, I suggested "Four score and seven" instead of "Eighty-seven" like he wanted to say.

Back to the Tim's Brier now... maybe cook some pork chops... if I can do so with one hand whilst I hold myself up with my cane in the other hand.

I, for one, shall avoid 40k as I wouldn't want anyone to think that a Johnny Come Lately would be so rude as to waltz in and steal it away from those more "deserving". Now, mind you, there are 'Catters out there who have never even posted herewithin that will be eying 40k as is their ilk so I expect youse guys to be on top of this for your own sakes.

This was not an assigned mission, you know, Hawk, and it was not cleared with Mom to bring some fly-by-night amateur into her house for the momentous celebration of a decade of Ks. P'raps you could just rest aisy, lad?

Angelina won't do it. What now? I guess maybe I could call up Shane. He'll do anything for a free beer.

The inventory statistics are pretty interesting, and when you think about it, the prospect of having someone physically examine each of our 1.2 million books over the course of a year (and the collection folks act on everything we find) we're pacing ourselves and taking turns by department. This month is Admin's turn to do a bunch of books in the liberal arts area.

That's a fabulous idea, though the ads with coupons would have to be quite durable. Some of our books don't leave the shelves for decades at a time. We're in the process of an inventory right now, that will be finished by the end of the fiscal year. So far they've found 3,000 books that didn't have barcodes. This is after an extensive effort about 10 years ago to barcode every book, and all new books are bar coded as they are received.

Put little images on springs and place them amongst the books on the shelves -- better still, have someone else do it. The springs are compressed by the book, so when you take it out, voila! A pop-up (or -out)!

Come to think of it, this is a way libraries could supplement their budgets - by selling advertising space on pop-outs. The advertising could even be market oriented: restaurants and food stores in among the cookbooks (DDC 641.5), antique stores in the 700s, then there's the untapped market in 612.6....

Next door the computer is dead! Long live the computer! The Dell is kaput, and after I showed my neighbor where the hard drive is ("take it out of there, please") she put the case in the garage to go out to Goodwill or someplace. The new Lenovo (I prefer HP, but the Lenovo was a little cheaper and it was her money) is finally up, after we struggled through the blutooth settings on the mouse and keyboard, and I put her data back in after updating it and such. Several hours spent, but she now has a very nice all in one touchscreen and should have many hours of lovely browsing. It's so fast compared to the old one - that is what will hit her first.

She has a 1Tb computer and I put in 1 CD (700meg) of data that she accumulated from the last 9 years on the Dell. Talk about overkill!

MOM's form of browsing is perusing the books in the front room, but that's fine. There are days when I much prefer pages that don't involve popups.

A kayaker took advantage of one of the fast inflows of water generated by the Tsunami as he cruised into Quivira basin in Mission Bay as a lifeguard boat looked on.

Ben Schlabs, from San Dimas, watched for the Tsunami while laying on his back in the sand at Mission Beach.

San Diego City Lifeguard Lt. Andy Lerum video recorded the slow rise and fall of the water in the Mission Bay Channel from atop the lifeguard control tower in Mission Bay.

Dozens of people stood on the shoreline and milled about on the boardwalk in Mission Beach at 8:45am on Friday, hoping to see Tsunami waves.

The tsunami generated by an 8.9 earthquake off Japan on Friday briefly produced 1.1' waves at the Scripps Pier in La Jolla, says the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The wave heights were recorded at 8:50 a.m. on a gauge at the end of the pier.

Earlier, scientists said the tsunami could produce waves up to 2.3' in La Jolla, 2.2' in northern Imperial Beach, and 1' at San Diego's Navy Pier, inside the bay.

Nah, it's probably passed by now. You're on high [moral?] ground anyway. Just enjoy the light streaming in from your new door glass. No need to hide your head.

Walk right out to the edge of the beach, Amos, to get a really gooood look. ;-) That's what I always do when there are tsunami warnings issued.

EIseley has volunteered as the Designated Reader, so the rest of you can continue drinking. But Eiseley, I am not in Oregon, and I don't think we'll see much impact. I may swing by the cove to see how high it has gotten this afternoon.

Using my Librarian Instincts and Abilities, I was able to ferret out this small excerpt from a forthcoming book by Someone Well Know To Mom:

"Dear, where's that stuff we put in the dishwasher to keep spots off the glasses? The dispenser is empty."

"It's in the back -- beyond the Cascade."

A book full of danger, thrills, love, laughter, philosophical mutterings, kraken, pirates, and all sort of exciting stuff.

Is that Max's film? I was reading about it today on his About.me page (I'm thinking about setting one up, if Max finds it was helpful).

Mike, funerals are entities to themselves. You'll be processing the information and will sort out your brother from the ceremony in the coming months and years. And, as the Internet is saying these days, it gets better. Easier, at any rate.

I have two Bette/ys in my life these days, and they both have had computer problems this week. I spent several hours next door before pronouncing her 2002 Dell almost-dead; it clearly has computer Alzheimer's. The mother board or the hard drive - and neither is worth the trouble. Either the expense of a mother board or the trouble of reistalling antique software on a new hard drive. I'll go with her Friday to look at new computers (I am recommending that she get an HP all-in-one this time. It doesn't have the bulk of the desktop but it is a lot faster than the laptop and she isn't interested in taking it anywhere). My other Bette is long distance, near Tucson, and she was on the floor unplugging the data plug from her old desktop in order to plug it into and then restart her laptop. All of this time she's been playing solitaire on her laptop because she didn't know how to plug it in. [knocks forehead on desk] She's 77, she needed some help. I wish I'd called weeks earlier.

Mom!!!

"Beyond the Cascade"   has just received a rave review by one of its development reviewers, an Oscar winning film director.   He writes, simply,

"YOU DID IT!!!!
You freakin' did it!"

Which after some fifteen years of writing, re-writing and editing, is consummate acknowledgment. Big win for the day.

It was a raw Spring day, windy and damp without the warmth promised by the ambient temperature. We left the funeral home in procession to the church. A Requiem Mass was read and at the end the white pall replaced by the American flag. We processed to the cemetery, where my brother lies between the graves of my parents and maternal grandparents. Another set of spiritual reading and prayers, and then two officers in dress blues (one a woman) folded the flag and presented it to Teri, Ted's widow. The Honor Guard fired three volleys and "Taps" was played; the bugler turned out to be an old sort-of friend.

Afterward we went to the community room at the parish school we had all attended for a lunch, and the Catholics can out-Jello the Mormons any day. I had two helping of what I thought was gelatinous space alien brain matter but which turned out to be blue Jello with blueberries. Too much sugar! Also industrial sized pans of tuna-noodle casserole, since this is Ash Wednesday and a day of fast and abstinence, one of only a few remaining, and which everyone except the church ladies had forgotten.

And that's the story of the funeral, Eiseley. We'll be back in Idaho this coming Sunday evening, and leave for DC for a week the following Wednesday or Thursday. "...the thrill is a long time gone...."

Thank you, gnu. Yes, the electrical system is grounded to the old pipe that is still sticking through the foundation and deep, deep into the soil. It would be shocking if it weren't.

The best way to ground something is to get William Shatner to sit on it.

New blue pipe... if it replACES COPPER, MAKE SURE YOUR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS PROPERLY GROUNDED.

I had a short conversation with Mr Shatner today. I'm afraid I have bad news. There is almost no chance that he will show up here to post the 40,000th post.

It's tough, but we're just going to have to tighten our belts and get through it somehow without him.

Thank goodness for moles---the equipment that has a pencil-shaped rod that bangs its way through soil and rocks and pretty much anything in its way. There is now a slick blue pipe running from the water main, up under the embankment, through the foundation in two places, and it will soon be connected to the old pipe with a crimp and a prayer. The whole process was painful on the pocketbook, but fairly smooth otherwise. Hey, it's only money.

The break was somewhere along the 90-year-old pipe, probably somewhere under the front yard. The guys couldn't really tell. But it was obviously not on the city's property. I'll try to post some photos if I can figure out how Amos did it with his front door pictures. The maple tree is still intact.

Right now I'm more interested in how Ted's funeral went.

If the line was broken by the tree roots it's likely the city's problem since the tree is on their easement. In fact, if your basement is flooded and the break in outside of the property line, well, the city carries insurance.

"... a water leak somewhere between the main and my house."

Details please. The most LIKELY spot for the leak is at the valve just before your property line. Such would be the responsibility of the local government.

Of course, you also said "... under the maple tree..." soooo, that's the second most likely spot. Hmmm... is it YOUR maple tree? If so, do you have a wood burning appliance? You can always borrow a chainsaw.
