What did the bad nuns teach you?

The good nuns taught me that all prayers -- ALL! -- are answered. Eventually and perhaps in ways you don't expect.

Like the time I prayed and prayed for a passing grade on an arithmetic test but got a character-building experience instead.

Amos - that's great! Can I send it to my-nephew-the-priest?

Most of them don't even know what the hell "exegisis" means!

Well, was the floor mature enough to assert its faith before you sprinkled it? IF so, even water-jacket water becomes sanctified through some divine process of sublimation, and your prayers may be answered1.

1Divine receipt of prayers even under approved conditions not guaranteed. Not all prayers which are received will be answered. Not all prayers which are answered will be answered in the exact form requested. Answers to prayers may vary from originating request in any dimension or attribute at the sole discretion of the Grantor. Not all answers to prayers will be timely, and some may be singularly untimely and appear inappropriate to your circumstances on arrival. Senders of prayers undertake absorption into the Divine Reality Distortion Field at their own risk. The Divinity assumes no fault or liability, implied or explicit, for any consequence of faith-based actions on the part of the Requestor or Aspirant. Your prayer-response experience may vary, and the Grantor assumes no obligation to reveal or explicate the variables governing the response in any way shape or form, other than in ways the Grantor may select in his sole discretion without prior notice or clarification. Offer void where prohibited.

Speaking of sprinkling water. . .

there has been a spot on my garage floor for a few weeks. Yesterday I took the pickup in to see if it was the radiator (proximity being my sole diagnostic tool in this matter). Nope. Water pump. Set me back $500 smackers this afternoon. Oy. Some heavenly intervention via a cash infusion would be mighty welcome about now!

AH, well. I stand reproved, for trying to make you dig it all up and condense it for me.

I cannot help but wonder whether those who get wrapped around the axle on the precis emoment of watering have any sense of the disproportionality between their exegisis and the take of Genesis.

Amos - there are over 80 thousand hits on google for "infant baptism versus adult".

*grin* I personally doubt if sprinkling, submerging, drinking, dunking or anything else with water makes any difference to God; but you know how hung up administrators get about procedure.

But infants operate ENTIRELY on faith -- they're MADE of the stuff!! THat's how they survive.

And, the other thing I miss about this question is the word "valid".

a. What does it mean in this context?

b. Whose decision is it to make or to announce?

My best friend when I was in elementary school was from a devout Catholic family. She distilled it down to its essence: "If you're ever in a car crash and you're sure you're going to die you can sprinkle yourself with some radiator water and that's good enough to get you to heaven."

I think it's a matter of whether or not baptism is valid without the individuals profession of faith - which an infant can't give

But--I must be missing something here--WHY is it an issue? What is the thesis and the counter-thesis?

What is a huge issue? Dunk versus dabble? What is the question(s) around which the issue turns?

"Believe in it?? Hell, I've seen it done!"

I think there's a ballad in there somewhere -- or perhaps a children's song.

MOM! Stand up straight. What will the neighbors think? THis is a straight and upright God-fearin' Baptist neighborhood, you know!! Draw them blinds next time you're wanting to keel over like that.

Nice!

Most days when I check the mail it's because I heard the truck pull up at the curb (my office is next to the front door). And there is usually a cat with me. So today for variety I brought Cinnamon into the house. She thought it was a lot of fun, sitting and looking through the glass door at the world pass by (usually she watches the world from the back yard) and then was happy to see Anthony come up the walk. I had to sign for a package so let go of her collar and told her to sit. And she sat very well for most of the transaction, though she did finally stand and politely sniff his shoe. Oh, those killer pit bulls. You never know what they're gonna do. (He said he dropped a bite of his hamburger on that shoe when he was eating lunch. She simply detected the few remaining ions of grease, and knowing this dog's nose and intelligence, probably also knew the breed of cow and what state the meat was shipped from.)

Speaking of dogs, one of the staff at work lost her golden retriever to old age last Fall. Yesterday they were down in Arimo (that's a town, not a condition) and fell hard for another golden. Well...you know danged good and well that they now have another dog.

I'm glad I took advantage of yesterday's lovely weather. Today is not cold, but it is overcast and windy. Not so nice. And I had to walk six whole blocks home in it from the car dealer up at the corner by the freeway ramp. I decided to take it in after I left the house so I didn't have a jacket (I usually drop off my son at the school bus and drive back home and head straight in the house so I don't need a jacket.) The truck is leaking coolant a few drops at a time for the last few weeks. Time to catch it before it becomes serious.

MOM agrees--within limits. She took her pickup truck in for work and it needed so much work that she had them do it then let them KEEP the truck to pay for the work. It's shank's mare these days.

I don't need an awful lotta luck --
Only three things I need in life,
To get me through the bog.
They're a smooth running pickup truck,
A beautiful affectionate wife,
And a clean-smelling, obedient dawg.

Most of the dark and windy nigh: hordes of rain drops, sweeping in giant formations down from the skies like malevolent, cold-eyed hussars from heaven, filling the reservoirs, ending the shortfall, flooding the streets, eroding the mountainside homes of the rich, drowning the mosquitos, soaking the motorcyclists and pedestrians, drowning worms and nourishing the lawns and flowers of Southern California. More expected today. Film at eleven.

Two is enough for us. They're clean and smell sweet and are quite frisky. I chose the warmest part of the afternoon for bath time, but with time left for sunshine so they could dry completely before sunset. It is still January, after all.

Just to make the whole Legion thing more interesting, it's started to snow and later today that will become rain AND snow. The Legionaires and Legionettes started running around, sticking to each other and to things and I'm not at all sure that I'd want to sleep with my face glued to Red Ale's posterior as Saddle Sammy had to.

It ain't a purty picher up there right now, nossir!

Just as soon as enough acetone gets here.

Arkansaw stuck himself to the tap on the beer car. Lizziebelle and Rowdy stuck themselves together. Peeleg managed to stick himself to his Ronny Ray Gun (shoots genuine sparks when you pull the trigger!) which he managed to stick to the Colonel-General's...backside. And she is stuck to the statue of the Unknown Idahoer out in front of the Hovel.

I told 'em, "The Legion Always Sticks Together!" but I think they're going to change the Legion's motto when this is over.

Dear old Rapaire, always ready and hot to trot when the subject turns to long, narrow explosive objects.

I think we ought to send the Legion into New York State to secure it for Obama.

YOU ever deal with the International Brother and Sister Hood of Cannoneers and Other Big Gunners (IBSHCOBG)? The Union has a short fuse, is quite touchy, and explodes if they think you're ramming it to their membership! They'll recoil from any slight, perceived or real, and target you for firing a member whether it's effective or not.

They found some old (very old!) ammo for the 75. Those who found it also had superglue on their fingers. This is going make things a little difficult.

Well, the Legion is ready for them. The old French 75 has been cleaned up and is ready to go, if they can find the ammunition for it. Likewise the Bofors 40mm twin mount. The troops have been issued the rifles from the armory and have taken themselves to The Bunker over on 6th Avenue for supplies and rations and the daily issue of "rum" (one liter per person, 151 proof). Several problems have arisen and perhaps someone can help:

1. How do you wrap puttees so they don't fall apart?
2. Where can you get a lot of ammunition for .57-90 caliber rifles?
3. The Legion needs a large sign that reads "Be SURE to tighten the cinch before mounting the horse!"
4. Another large sign is needed that reads "The saddle horn goes to the front!"

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Good analogy. I wanted to share, but didn't have anything to elevate, except the moment itself. I'm tired of sorting and boxing books. I have cabin fever after several days of bad weather. I have to do SOMETHING to reach outward. (I'm not so desperate to swing by the Legion Hall, though. That would be suicidal. . . )
