Ugly.

You'll need speakers and a media player.

I'm a-gittin' tired of this....

Pop to the top - which is differenet then hop on pop
which I for one don't want to picture Mom doing -
though i do want Mom to be on top -

and this whole thing is giving mental images that could cost me a bundle in psych care.

"The bullshitter . . . does not reject the authority of the truth, as the liar does, and oppose himself to it. He pays no attention to it at all. By virtue of this, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are."

Excerpt:

On Bullshit

Harry G. Frankfurt

Princeton University

One of the most salient features of our cul-ture is that there is so much bullshit. Everyone knows this. Each of us contributes his share. But we tend to take the situation for granted. Most people are rather confident of their ability to recognize bullshit and to avoid being taken in by it. So the phenomenon has not aroused much deliberate concern, or attracted much sustained inquiry. In conse-quence, we have no clear understanding of what bullshit is, why there is so much of it, or what functions it serves. And we lack a conscientiously developed appreciation of what it means to us. In other words, we have no theory. I propose to begin the development of a theoretical understanding of bullshit, mainly by providing some tentative and exploratory philosophical analysis. I shall not consider the rhetorical uses and misuses of bullshit. My aim is simply to give a rough account of what bullshit is and how it differs from what it is not, or (putting it somewhat differently) to articulate, more or less sketchily, the structure of its concept. Any suggestion about what conditions are logically both necessary and sufficient for the constitution of bullshit is bound to be somewhat arbitrary.

Yeah, I believe in People's choice or somesuch other kind of awards. The english language is dynamic and should be allowed to change and evolve. Words should be allowed to mean what the majority of users want them to mean. Mostly. Somewhat. Here and there.

there's my protest. Martin can have his award. :D

Speaking of banjos, I noticed that Steve Martin didn't have his with him when he appeared on the Mark Twain Award program for Lorne Michaels last night. (They did play a clip of the first Blues Brothers song, and Paul Simon was there to sing "Still Crazy After All These Years.")

The judges have completed their deliberations, and the winner of the "Name 'that tendency of a small, insular group of people to argue incessantly among themselves over the exact meaning, derivation and pronunciation of obscure words with which the majority of the population is largely unfamiliar' Contest" is...

Mmario for his just-in-the-nick-of-time entry "MOABosis"!

The judging committee was leaning toward Amos, for "cluckfester" until someone pointed out that the word is already used in some circles to describe chicken hemorrhoids so it was disqualified.

Congratulations, Mmario! Your prize, as always, is a carefree no-expense-paid weekend at the beautiful Sandy Landing Yacht and Racquet Club in lovely Munson, Florida. Bring your own camping gear, mosquito repellent and snake-bite kit. And you might want to bring some Vaseleine or K-Y in case Bubba and Jim Bob happen to be camping on that same sandbar. Them boys get sorta rowdy and start imaginin' they're in that "Deliverance" movie. Might wanta practice up a bit on squeelin' like a pig while yer at it.

"Cluckfester" was added to the English language well before the deadline at 10:17 on March 2, along with the formal forms: "tribal logoneurotic pathology, or verbal cluckfester."

I would dispute this definition. A majority of the population would be familiar with most of the words we discuss. Probably. Sort of

And we're not insular. We welcome anybody willing to put up with us....

The rest is spot on, though.

"Bickering" is too simple a term to describe the convoluted discourse on this thread. It describes a tone of voice that is largely absent from this forum. (There is some whining, however, and pontificating, and well, lots of BS . . . )

BTW although it became adopted by earlier computer specialists, it goes back to the early 60's among merchant marine engineers tom my certain knowledge. I believe as well it could be found in the Navy.

I've never before heard kludge, which webster.com says also has alternate spelling kluge. They also kindly pronounce it for you, rhyming it with stooge, or alternate pronounciation is two sylables klug-ee. Etymology unknown, the meaning is a lot more restricted only having to do with computers. There are a lot of sound changes that are regular between German and English, and g to j is not a common one. That doesn't mean it can't be though, lots of fluke sound changes as well as the regular ones.

Bee Dubya, I think what we are doing is commonly known as bickering. Isn't it a fun game?

Here's a definition in need of a word:

"The tendency of a small, insular group of people to argue incessantly among temselves over the exact meaning, derivation and pronunciation of obscure words with which the majority of the population is largely unfamiliar."

You may adapt an existing word to this new meaning or make up an entirely new word. All entries must be posted by 12 noon MCT, Thursday, March 3rd. The decision of the judges shall be final.

Well, maybe I mis-represented theexample-- rouge is the closest rhyme I can think of but kluge is a little lumpier in the g.

Definitions of kluge on the Web:

1. A ramshackle, barely competent device, whether in hardware or software. 2. A clever programming trick intended to solve a particular nasty case in an expedient, if unclear, manner. Often used to repair bugs. 3. Something that works for the wrong reason. In 1947, the "New York Folklore Quarterly" reported a story Murgatroyd the Kluge Maker then current in the U.S. Armed Forces, in which a kluge was a complex and puzzling artifact with a trivial function. kluge was also Navy slang during World War II for any piece of electronics that worked well on shore but consistently failed at sea. The variant kludge was popularized by Jackson Granholme, [How to Design a Kludge, Datamation, February 1962, 30-31] who defined it as: "An ill-assorted collection of poorly matching parts, forming a distressing whole."

I don't know what louge is, but rouge and stooge don't rhyme they way I say them. Stooge has a g that is like j in jump and the rouge is a soft one like they have in french, like in beige or the way some people say garage.
