if you observe a kettle with boiling water to cook pasta ( see related thread), the pasta at the end of the entire process will be slighty different that it would have been, had you not observed it

of course - because everyone knows a watched pot does *not* boil - and therefore the pasta will not be slightly different - but QUITE different - because it really needs to be cooked in boiling water - not -almost but not boiling because it's being watched water- so instead of lovely tasty pasta you will end up more with heat coagulated glue.

Once upon a time there was a poor woodcutter named BillD. Bill D, his wife Rapairetta, and his two children Handsoff and Gretify were starving. A neighbour Amos gave them some intellectual food but Handsoff and Gretify wanted the real thing, so the goat ate the food. Their mother Rapairetta angrily sent them out and told them not to return until they have collected something sensible and edible, like berries. Handsoff and Gretify went to the woods where they come upon the kindly Catspaw who lived in a cottage made of waffle and maple syrup. She invited them to stay for a meal, but then quickly locked them up and started fattening them up with the intention of eating them spread on waffles.

Little hawk and brucie were passing by, singing a little canadian ditty about waffles. They could see maple syrup pouring from the nearby maple trees, and wandered into a little glen, where they stubled across the little house made of waffles.

Help! help! cried Handsoff and Gretify, we have been captured by the wicked Catspaw. They quickly explained their story to the previously unbelieving brucie and Little hawk, who listened patiently. Thanks, Handsoff and Gretify, said LH, we have been looking for that goat for some months now. And they raced off in the direction of the goat, leaving Handsoff and Gretify wondering how they would get away from the terrible smell in the Waffle House, which was sometimes just too much to bear....

Haw!!! Amos got question #5 wrong!!! There is no correlation between Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, The Holographic Theory of Learning, The MOAB, and Waffle House's recipe for grits!!! It was a trick question!!! It should have read "Explain the correlation between Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, The Holographic Theory of Learning, The MOAB, and Krispy Kreme Donuts." And the correct answer is, "I'll take what's behind door #1! No! Make that door #3! No! No! The curtain! Aw, fuck it! I'll take the cash!"

Theorem of Heisenberg 's Uncertainty Principle: if you observe a kettle with boiling water to cook pasta ( see related thread), the pasta at the end of the entire process will be slighty different that it would have been, had you not observed it. Right?

Beautiful city of Edinburgh, most wonderful to be seen,
With your ancient palace of Holyrood and Queen's Park Green,
And your big, magnificent, elegant New College,
Where people from all nations can be taught knowledge.

The New College of Edinburgh is certainly very grand
Which I consider to be an honour to fair Scotland,
Because it's the biggest in the world, without any doubt,
And is most beautiful in the inside as well as out.

And the Castle is wonderful to look upon,
Which has withstood many angry tempests in years bygone;
And the rock it's built upon is rugged and lovely to be seen
When the shrubberies surrounding it are blown full green.

Morningside is lovely and charming to be seen;
The gardens there are rich with flowers and shrubberies green
And sweet scented perfumes fill the air,
Emanating from the sweet flowers and beautiful plants there.

And as for Braidhill, it's a very romantic spot,
But a fine place to visit when the weather is hot;
There the air is nice and cool, which will help to drive away sorrow
When ye view from its summit the beautiful city of Edinburgh.

And as for the statues, they are very grand-
They cannot be surpassed in any foreign land;
And the scenery is attractive and fascinating to the eye,
And arrests the attention of tourists as they pass by.

Lord Melville's Monument is most elegant to be seen,
Which is situated in St. Andrew's Square, amongst shrubberies green,
Which seems most gorgeous to the eye,
Because it is towering so very high.

The Prince Albert Consort Statue looks very grand,
Especially the granite blocks whereon it doth stand,
Which is admired by all tourists as they pass by,
Because the big granite blocks seem magnificent to the eye.

Princes Street West End Garden Is fascinating to be seen,
With its beautiful big trees and shrubberies green,
And its magnificent water fountain in the valley below
Helps to drive away from the tourist all care and woe.

The Castle Hotel is elegant and grand,
And students visit it from every foreign land,
And the students of Edinburgh often call there
To rest and have luncheon, at a very cheap fare.

Queen Street Garden seems charming to the eye,
And a great boon it is to the tenantry near by,
As they walk along the grand gravel walks near there,
Amongst the big trees and shrubberies, and inhale pure air.

Then, all ye tourists, be advised by me,
Beautiful Edinburgh ye ought to go and see.
It's the only city I know of where ye can wile away the time
By viewing its lovely scenery and statues fine.

Magnificent city of Edinburgh, I must conclude my muse,
But to write in praise of thee I cannot refuse.
I will tell the world boldly without dismay
You have the biggest college in the world at the present day.

Of all the cities in the world, Edinburgh for me;
For no matter where I look, some lovely spot I see;
And for picturesque scenery unrivalled you do stand.
Therefore I pronounce you to be the Pride of Fair Scotland.

(Shrubberies, glorious shrubberies! Just can't get enough of 'em.)

Is there anybody out there???

PS. You Moab's, Oh brothers and sisters, for over a year I considered you freaks in arms, you obviously did not get naked and do a sun dance for me. I needed your energies, but all I got was ignories. I feel neglected and rejected. Abandonded of your energy and power to do at will..

Rain must have been in the more poweres that be, than all the MOAB put together.

I thought we were more powereful than that but let's just go on and praise Bill Shatner...
Okay
Love you and want you to know we still played on through rain.

I tried to eat at a Waffle House once, but I never even got to place my order because all the other people in the place kept changing their minds about what they wanted to eat. "I'll have the scrambled eggs with bacon and toast. No. Make that biscuits. And ham, not bacon. And change the scrambled to over-easy. Did I say biscuits? Could ya make that pancakes instead? And coffee. Black. No, make that cream and sugar...."

But a great deal less uncertain than a waffle house. In fact, a little known probable fact is that the Theorem of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle was first discovered when Schrodinger's cat dragged it into a Waffle House.

The MOAB has gone continental! So tell us, polaitaly, have you performed the sacred duty to be undertaken by all novice MOABites? In other words, have you read this piece of crap thread from beginning to end?

Here's a short quiz:

1) Whose bright idea was this piece of crap anyway?
2) With what common construction site appliance is CarolC often associated? (No! It's not an accordion!)
3) Why are Amos' posts so often indecipherable?
4) Why are Tweed's posts always indecipherable?
5) Explain the correlation between Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, The Holographic Theory of Learning, The MOAB, and Waffle House's recipe for grits.

No, Tweed, I did not see CarolC actually play the accordion - with or without clothes on. For that matter, I never actually saw the infamous accordion. For all I know, her accordion playing may just be an elaborate fiction though I can't imagine why anyone would want to pretend to be an accordion player. There are so many more socially acceptable things one could pretend to be. Like a leper.

Now, for an important announcement:

I have had the honor, the pleasure, and the exceedingly good fortune to have met Her Royal Highness Crapperqueen CarolC in the flesh (though she was wearing clothes at the time) along with the Royal Consort Jack the Sailor.

The last I saw of her she was on her way to an accordion jam and I was on my way to see Arlo Guthrie. I hope the accordion jam didn't open a hole into an alternate universe which sucked poor Carol into it. Such things have been known to happen to accordion players, ya know,

I can see it now...delirious mobs gather in front of the Whitehouse (soon to be renamed: the WhiteHorse) chanting: Hail Shatner! Shat Hail! Shat Hail! (after Bill makes his move and siezes power, saving what is left of western civilization). The Ship of State becomes a starship. He boldly goes where no administration has gone before...and invades Holland! The Dutch are stopped in the nick of time, prevented from taking over the World through gradual reclaiming of the sea. The dikes are broken, Holland is reclaimed BY the sea, and the World is saved for Shatnocracy!!!

Freda, I'm reminded of a program I saw a year or two ago about Bob Ballard's research in the Black Sea. He found archeological evidence of human occupation in what is now quite deep water. The theory is that there was a natural barrier to rising ocean levels and when the Bosporus broke through the water rushed in and over time filled the basin where the now much later Black Sea is today. (Much as when Lake Bonneville, the Great Salt Lake predecessor, rushed out and down the Snake and reshaped the Columbia.) This leads Ballard and others to speculate that such an event (people having to move hundreds of yards a day to stay ahead of the water) could lead to the story of the flood and Noah's Arc.

I mention that story and the information that is appearing now in the context that some of these early stories may also have interesting natural history connections. It is easy to imagine the habitation of a large cave with well-established formations leading to a story of an elaborate underground city. And here in the states, it is known that in places like Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, the longest cave system in the world, that every place that modern day cave explorers have traveled in that cave system, they come upon evidence of ancient exploration through or living accomodations by American Indians. There are some very large rooms in Mammoth that are still full of artifacts, but there are also lots of tunnels they traversed. There seems to have been a lot of mining activity, scraping minerals from the walls, though I don't know what that would have been used for.

Has anyone read the May 2004 Smithsonian article called "Rocking the Cradle" about an archeologist's work in Iran? The subtitle is "In Iran, an archaeologist is racing to uncover a literate Bronze Age society he believes predates ancient Mesopotamia. Critics say he may be overreaching, but they concede his dig will likely change our view of the dawn of civilization." What do you suppose an ancient city like this has contributed to human storytelling and literature about mythic places over the centuries?

Then there are the hanging coffins of the ancient Ba people in China. . .

I think the Agarthi legends have their roots in factual history for those humans along the centuries who have been reincarnated as ants.

No telling what they've got going on down beneath the Gobi or under the Himalayas. Really a charming conceit.

I have been rasty of late in reaction to higher-than-average doses of poor taste and rat-shit mediocrity being flaunted about in the raiment of aesthetics, a sort of mental delusion which always depresses the hell out of me. My apologies if I have tread on anyone's toes.
