Back in the apartment, it's late, and last time I looked at that blister, it was half-again as big as the toe it's under. Moonglow is now up to a knee brace (picked up two days ago), moleskin, bandaids, blister pads, and as of this afernoon, an ankle brace. She's hanging in there, but will no doubt limp onto the plane on Tuesday.

I think the Freds have been here in New York City. And the Ralphs. They're disguised as tourists. Clever of them!

Beings from another moat? All depends whose castle they've been hanging around near. Can't just have ANYONE from a moat pop in you know; one has one's standards. I've seen beings from irrigation trenches pretend to come from moats just to gain access to their betters. You must be vigilant. That's the price we pay.

How would you folks like to be visited by beings from "Another MOAT"?

*cue Twilight Zone music.

Yeah. Better than doing the same silly thing over and over...like getting up in the morning.

Morning boost for Mom before I head to the little place across the street to get my hot tea and roll. But before that, there's this humongous blister that came up under one toe overnight. [sigh] All this walking is good for the rest of the body but hard on the feet.

Wow! What a great deal!! You sly fox, running off on an East Coast adventure and not telling anyone. Well done on landing in the Village, where the ancient spirits of the Great Folk Scare still appear from time to time.

Y'all come back safe, now, ya hear?

Hello from the Big Apple, Amos, Rapaire, BWL and all! I would have rescued mom from the nether regions of the page had I been home to do so. But I was in Brooklyn with my daughter eating Lebonese food then walking around the promenade at Brooklyn Heights. I'm in Manhattan now, testing out the new keyboard, mouse, and monitor I've purchased for the friend who is letting us stay at his apartment in the north end of Greenwich Village (14th St. at 7th Ave.). He isn't here now, he left for a few days, so these are a surprise. He bought a new computer 18 months ago, but kept the old peripherals to use. His old monitor was from sometime around the mid-1990s and his keyboard was practically Neanderthal. His mouse didn't have a wheel for scrolling, just the old two-button mouse job. The cost of this gift is that of a modest hotel for a few nights, not even covering the entire time we're here. He is going to go ballistic before he falls in love with this stuff, but by then I'll be back in Fort Worth. His old monitor was a horror, dark, not adjustible. The keyboard had no media controls (I found one that has a few discreetly placed buttons along the top).

Keep mom afloat! I won't be on the computer often until mid-week.

Jeeze, the best creative spirits, scientific reports, poetic fancies, and sheer inspired BS in the land can be found here in the delicate folds of the MOAB, and what do we, her honoring and obedient children do? We let her nearly fall off the darn page, that's what!!

It is Saturday, you know. The library is closed now, the pets are asleep, the lawn is asleep, and network load is low, and the Cat is running perfectly.

Hi Mom! Sorry I haven't been around much. I was off to visit the Pleiades with my little gray friend whose name I can't pronounce. You know, the one from that planet with a lot of "K"s in it. He said he'd meet me for lunch in Kokomo in a couple of weeks. I don't know how he knew I'd be passing through Kokomo, but I don't know how he knows or does a lot of things. Like how we got to the Pleiades and back in three days. It was cool. A star cluster looks totally different when you're inside it. So does a condom.

Astronomers have discovered an object in our solar system that is larger than Pluto. They are calling it the 10th planet, but already that claim is contested.

The new world's size is not at issue. But the very definition of planethood is.

It is the first time an object so big has been found in our solar system since the discovery of Pluto 75 years ago"

More at Space.com's story.

Oddly enough it was a double-whammy week for astronomers looking for planets, who have only "gotten lucky" about a dozen times in the last 4,000 years, if you count the ones found in other systems.

They found ANOTHER one, slightly smaller than Jupiter (70%) but much lighter, and possessing a moon, in orbit out past Neptune.

Here's da story.

A heady day for planet-seekers, eh? Good thing, too -- they don't get many of them!!

HIS name, sir, is Hans Schumacher of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Braunscheig, Germany.

Regardless, a good proctologist is something I think you should look for; I submit you have been pulling too many wild realities out of your aft access port. At least, I assume that is where they come from; your cranial capacity has never been in doubt, but that's a horse of a different odour color.

Rapaire,

WHile I do think of you as a brother, I have to say your imagination seems to be running away with you.

You don't seem to remember that I left that decrepit, judgemental environment when I was fifteen, hitch-hiked to San Francisco and made a career for myself first as a child prostitute and then as an international rock and roll star. I never looked back, while it seems that you never looked forward.

As for Braunschweiger, he is a PhD, to be sure; but having a PhD in matters of spin and charge does not make him a "spin doctor" anymore than it puts him "in charge". Those in-charge doctors are the ones you were warned about at an early age, but you couldn't be arsed....sigh.

...Hans Schumacher of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Braunscheig, Germany...

So, this Braunscheiwger is probably a PhD. And you trust the word of a spin doctor? Amos, I thought I'd taught you better than that! And if I didn't, Mom certainly did. I remember her telling you just the other day, "Amos, if you keep believing everything those spin doctors say you'll end up just like poor old Bee-Dubya-Ell! Now eat your noodles and I don't want you listening to Those People any more. You hear me?" And then she smacked you upside the head with a spatula, just to reinforce the point, even though I expected her to whap you on TOP of the head to try and reduce the point.

That was the night we had your favorite food, liver 'n' noodles, remember? You called it "patty de fubar noodles" and laughed so hard you fell off your chair and spilled your milk and I cleaned it up so that Mom wouldn't have to get down on her aching old arthritic hands and knees to do so. We had your favorite braunsheiwger cake with chocolate icing for dessert, too.

So you were warned about believing everything these spin doctors say.

Electrons on speed? What is this world coming to. I think those electrons should be content to just go at their normal velocity - society today is too quick to just prescribe drugs for conditions that don't require them.

electrons on speed, indeed! Next we'll be having quarks on crack!

You will be delighted to hear that electrons are now being taught to go ballistic at great speed:

NEW SPINTRONIC SPEED RECORD. Spintronics is the science devoted to
gaining greater control over digital information processing by
exploiting electron spin along with electron
charge in microcircuits.

One drawback to implementing a scheme of
magnetic-based memory cells for computers has been the relatively
slower speed of spin transistors. Hans Schumacher of the
Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Braunscheig, Germany, has now
devised the fastest yet magnetic version of a random access memory
(MRAM) cell, one that switches at a rate of 2 GHz, as good as or
better than the fastest non-magnetic semiconductor memories. The
MRAM architecture is a sandwich, consisting of two magnetic layers,
with a tunneling layer in between.

When the magnetic layers are
aligned (their spin orientation is the same) resistance in the cell
is low; when they are counter-aligned resistance is high. These two
conditions establish the binary 1 or 0 states.

The speed of writing
or reading data to and from the cells has, for MRAMs, been limited
to cycle times of 100 MHz by magnetic excitations in the layers.
This problem has now been overcome, according to Hans Schumacher
(hans.w.schumacher@ptb.de), through a novel approach referred to as
ballistic bit addressing. In the case of the new MRAM architecture,
the influence of magnetic excitations is eliminated through the use
of very short (500 picosecond)
current pulses for carrying out the write operation and that even a
bit whose value will remain the same undergoes a complete 360-degree
precession, whereas a change of status (say, from a 0 to a 1) will
be achieved by pivoting the magnetic status of the cell through 180
degrees.

The 2-GHz switching speed (the rate at which writing can be
accomplished) is faster than static RAM (or SRAM) memories,
currently the fastest memories, can accomplish. Furthermore, the
magnetic memories are non-volatile, which means that the status of
the memory does not disappear
if the computer is shut down.

Definition: Tathagata:

Literally, "one who has become authentic (tatha-agata)," an epithet used in ancient India for a person who has attained the highest religious goal. In Buddhism, it usually denotes the Buddha, although occasionally it also denotes any of his arahant disciples.
here-and-now.org/wings.book/glossary.html

Usually translated as "Thus Come One." He who came as did all Buddhas, who took the absolute way of cause and effect, and attained to perfect wisdom; one of the highest titles of a Buddha (Charles Luk).
www.sinc.sunysb.edu/Clubs/buddhism/glossary.html

(Pali, Sanskrit; Chinese, ju-lai; Japanese, nyorai; Korean, yotae: usually left untranslated; if translated, then as 'Thus-gone', or 'Truth-finder'). According to Buddhist tradition, the title chosen for Buddha by himself. The title was intended to convey his identity as a perfect being, though the precise meaning of the word remains problematic. Etymologically, it can be read as (i) 'thus-gone' (tatha gata) or 'thus-come' (tatha agata), generally taken to mean 'one who has gone (or come)' ie attained emancipation; (ii) 'one come (agata) to the truth (tatha)'. The etymology may itself be suspect, however, since it is

As for the other puzzle it comes from something similar to this:

There is the leisurely one,
Walking the Tao, beyond philosophy,
Not avoiding fantasy, not seeking truth.
The real nature of ignorance is the Buddha-nature itself;
The empty delusory body is the very body of the Dharma.

When the Dharma body awakens completely,
There is nothing at all.
The source of our self-nature
Is the Buddha of innocent truth.
Mental and physical reactions come and go
Like clouds in the empty sky;
Greed, hatred, and ignorance appear and disappear
Like bubbles on the surface of the sea.

When we realize actuality,
There is no distinction between mind and thing
And the path to hell instantly vanishes.
If this is a lie to fool the world,
My tongue may be cut out forever.

Once we awaken to the Tathagata-Zen,
The six noble deeds and the ten thousand good actions
Are already complete within us.
In our dream we see the six levels of illusion clearly;
After we awaken the whole universe is empty.

No bad fortune, no good fortune, no loss, no gain;
Never seek such things in eternal serenity.
For years the dusty mirror has gone uncleaned,
Now let us polish it completely, once and for all.

Who has no-thought? Who is not-born?
If we are truly not-born, We are not un-born either.
Ask a machine if this is not so.
How can we realize ourselves
By virtuous deeds or by seeking the Buddha?

Release your hold on earth, water, fire, wind;
Drink and eat as you wish in eternal serenity.
All things are transient and completely empty;
This is the great enlightenment of the Tathagata.

If a man is crossing the river and an empty boat collides with his skiff,
even though he is a bad-tempered man he will not become very angry.
But if he sees a man in the other boat
he will scream and shout and curse at the man to steer clear.

If you can empty your own boat crossing the river of the world,
no one will oppose you, no one will seek to harm you.
This is the perfect man - his boat is empty. - Chuang-tzu

Desire cannot overcome itself.
Self cannot understand itself.
