Get rid of the splint and have a sploint to ease the pain. Although, that may not be legal in Idaho. I dunno. Its legal in Colorado, I understand. Rocky Mountain High and all that.

What was I doing up (and Mudcatting!) at 11:25 PM on gnu's Year Eve??? I am usually in my rocker in front of the tube, fast asleep.

Modern day splints don't even make good firewood. Back in the days when splints were made of wood, you healed up, took the splint off, and used it to cook a batch of biscuits in the wood-burning stove. Try that nowadays, and all you get is a bunch of poisonous fumes, a hefty fine for air pollution, and biscuits that taste of a cocktail of burnt polymers.

Same deal with crutches. Toss a pair of aluminum crutches in the fireplace and see how much warmer the room gets.

This one is fiberglass and has saw-like edges on both ends -- sharp teeth that make you appreciate what padding there is. Maybe I can reuse it as a flow diverter for a downspout or something.

Let the bells ring and the banners fly! It is gnu's Year Day! Big party at my place. Not today. Gotta wait for my first Canada Pension Plan cheque to arrive at the end of April.

P.S. Can't you guys take a hint? gnu's Year Day Eve not obvious enough? Not that I am grovelling for attention or anything like that. I just figure I deserve a few, "Holy crap! You actually lived that long after the abuse you put yourself through?"s.

P.S. 2.0 Hahahaha... this JUST came onto my FB feed. No Shit... Are you an old fart? Check out these 10 signs: http://ow.ly/lauW309mbSS

P.S. 3.0 Greco still has the XXL Grecoworks pizza deal on!!! $36 including delivery and tip. Time to get fatTER! It's usually over not long after the Superbowl (won this year by the greatest Yankee football team organization in history) but they must have decided to extend it until at least MARCH SEVENTH in MY honour.

P.S. 4.0 Nudge nudge, wink wink.

Got the splint off and now have to restore arm and hand strength and dexterity. For the first time in a coupe of weeks I'm typing with both hands.

Just for gnu, gnu.

By the way, this video was filmed at the Cherry Springs Trail -- a spot which attacks MANY walkers -- and which is not considered a hot spot for the things in the video. It is, however, a nice place for someone in shirtsleeves to be filmed, if they don't mind a few mosquitoes.

Rap is experiencing the sad realization that a vigorous lifetime of lifting heavy library books takes a toll. No one seems to realize the physical endurance, the balance, the upper body strength and manual dexterity required to work in a business whose major activity is moving tons of paper every year. Librarians might as well be stevedores.

Yes, but they're not paid as well. And there are snotty-nosed little brats, leaky diapers, irate patrons, low budgets, being coughed on -- and that's in the academic world. It's worse for public librarians.

Amos, you're in the southland now. Forget fancy words like "syncope". The proper southern term for the affliction is "falling out".

(Not to be confused with a similarly named affliction resulting from an ill-fitting brassiere.)

Tomorrow I start my invasion of Norway. Folks from there pillaged, looted, rapined, and burned the homes of some of my ancestors back a few years ago1 and we want the junk back, with interest. Of course, we did the same thing to them a year or so later. Then they came back to us, and we did them, and pretty soon we were all drinking mead together and alternately paying for the drinks. But tomorrow I go to SLC to fly to Chicago to fly to Stockholm on Wednesday to fly to Oslo (O'Slo if you're Irish) to take the train to Bergen to take a ship up around to Kirkenes and then back to Bergen where we take a plane to Copenhagen to fly to Chicago from which Pat and I will take a plane to fly back to SLC and take a bus back home on April 4. Then two days later Pat has surgery. Gonna be a fun trip, just like last year's to Hawai'i. But my axe is sharpened and my sword is unbent and the teeth marks are out the edge of my shield (I'm actually a berserker) and I'm sort of ready to go.

Amos, having an endoscopy is a good idea for GI bleeding. They could do a colonoscopy at the same time and meet in the middle, kinda like the golden spike at Promontory Point, Utah. Or they could float a little camera all the way through you, recording everything as it goes (New York Times review: "What a shitty first attempt! Moving in concept, but this movie is just plain crap.")

Hi, Mom! Half-and-half is supposedly 50% milk and 50% cream, right? Well, which half comes first, the cream or the milk? If you were to mix a cup of half-and-half with a cup of whole milk, would you get a pint of quarter-and-three-quarters or a pint of three-quarters-and-a-quarter?

It was a day of light rain that turned highly energetic after sundown. At a guess. Driving back from Raleigh, close to midnight, it was squint and slow down as the windshield wipers kept trying to keep up with the ferocious rhythms of rain.

But oh, my sibs, what a purely loverly evening I had at the Hibernian Irish Pub, sitting with Abbey Sale, our own renowned expert on old ballads both clean and soiled, and half a dozen other rare birds taking turns bringing old songs back to life. Good, sturdy, rollicking ones, plaintive ones, tragic ones, jolly ones. Two Guinesses later, the soul was replete with the joy of these brave voices restoring the glow of life to these pale shadows from long ago. Really, truly, Abby and his gang are gems in the wilderness. Amos is happy.

So, there's a bar of soap inside a box, and the two of them make something like this: [)]. See all the empty space inside the box? I paid good money for air! Why don't they just make soap in nice cakes with all 90° angles like they used to? Instead, they make the bars in weird shapes that require a big box, so you think you're getting a big bar of soap, but the box is 50% air.

Wal, ya see, Dub, they don 't pay no overhead for air since it is sorta omnipresent, and creeps in most anywhere whether paid or not. So it behooves them to sell you as much of it as they can. all disguised as soap. They figure by the time you finish popening the box, you won't notice, since their sold air has sliped off and mingled beyond all recognition with your local air. But you were too quick for 'em, I guess, and now they'll have to answer up for their wicked ways. If anyone could set those scoundrels down a peg you are surely the man for the job..

I am happy to report in other news that our house in California has been funded and the escrow should close by COB today, Wednesday, March 15th. We are as close as a red cat-whisker to completing this long and arduous jump, finally. Whooooof!

Sounds like BWL is using Dove. That's as fluffy as Ivory, regardless of the shape of the bar there's lots of air in the soap itself. I buy old-world type soaps made with olive oil and shay butter instead of fully nasty coconut acids and oils. And they're solid and last for a very long time.

Someone has a second interview for a job next week. Not saying who, in order to not jinx it. But you get my drift.

The January ice storm was bad (power out for four days). The one last week was bad enough to give Mum "flashback" freakouts (power out from 2AM to 8:30AM and from 11AM to 1PM). Luck comes in threes they say...

10:36 AM ADT Sunday 19 March 2017
Special weather statement in effect for:
•Moncton and Southeast New Brunswick

A low pressure system will approach slowly from the south tonight and Monday then linger around the region into Tuesday. Precipitation from this system will begin over southernmost portions of New Brunswick early Monday morning as a mixture of light snow, ice pellets and freezing rain but should change to rain later in the morning as temperatures climb slightly above the freezing mark. However, as temperatures fall later in the day and the precipitation continues to push northward, there is potential for a prolonged area of freezing rain to form Monday evening and persist into Tuesday morning. At this time northern and eastern portions of the province are most at risk for freezing rain.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts as freezing rain warnings may be required.
****************************************************************

Hey, Rap! They got any snow where you are?

We emerged from a really nasty cold spell--down to 45F. But now, the Equinox is upon us, in just a few more hours, and our chilly days will be past.

I drove with Dani twenty miles into the country north of here to a beautiful brick and timber chapel up on a hill where we heard a Women's Song choir sing sweetly and recite poems. It was just exhilarating, I am here to say. The uplifting beauty of their songs completely transcended my curmudgeonly cynicism about their metaphysics.

It's been a grand quiet Sunday here in the rolling green country of North Carolina about which I aim to learn more as time goes by.

Amos, enjoy the spring. Southern New England, on the other hand, is being whip-sawed. Shortly our temperatures, equinox or no equinox, will plunge back down to freezing and stay there day and night for a period of a few days. Spring may be here but it's too soon to enjoy it.

The soap which inspired my ire is actually Dial, but the curved, purportedly ergonomic and palm-fitting shape is shared by a number of commercial bar soaps today.

And speaking of paying for air, did you know there's a legal limit to the percentage of non-functional air fill that can be used in packaging? The McCormick spice company was sued and fined a while back because they changed the weight of black pepper per can from four ounces to three ounces without reducing the size of the can. The amount of dead air exceeded the legal limit. So, they were forced to change the can size. But did they reduce it by 25%, as logic would dictate? No way! They reduced it by as little as they possibly could and still be within the law.

By the way, the air in potato chip bags does not fall under the same regulation. It is considered functional air since it helps protect the bag from being crushed.

Also by the way, I'm sure this particular regulation is one the Trumpers would love to do away with. Make America Great Again by giving free-market capitalists free rein to charge exorbitant prices for as little actual product and as much empty space as possible! It'll be fantastic for the American economy! Really yuge! Just like the air-filled boxes it'll be packaged in.

Ah, yes - Dial soap. One of the first deodorant soaps (so the ads say - in theory, all soap would be deodorant soap). My parents liked that one, hence, once I was away from home and able to buy my own soap - I bought Dial. Until I smelled more interesting soaps that roommates were buying and from there all hell broke loose in my soap buying. In New York City I tracked down the Caswell Massey store and bought fancy English and European soaps. In other parts of the country I found Crabtree and Evelyn. And as I found those soap dispensaries, you can also track a line of businesses that went out of business because I must have been the only one buying soap there. Now I prowl the aisles of the Vitamin Shoppe and World Market and my local Halal import market to find any soap that (drum roll, please) doesn't have coconut products. Because after many years of wondering, I finally figured out that I've harbored an allergy to coconut (sodium laurelth sulfate, the first or second ingredient - yup - it's coconut - and about 3 dozen more scientific-sounding names). Now I buy soaps made with olive oil, with shay butter, with Dead Sea salts (and look like they're chunks of dirt) and unlike Dial, they are lavender or patchouli . . .

Got a little carried away.
