Quality is everything. Is LH referring to the poetical buffoon on the "walkabout" thread? There is simply no comparison.

Good guess, Stilly. All that is required for a thread like this to eventually spawn itself is for a few loquacious people with too much time on their hands to develop the habit of dropping in every day to see what is happening and contributing their various bits of idle verbiage to the ever-growing list of posts.

At first they find it merely amusing or diverting.

Presently it becomes a regular habit which they can barely do without.

Then it becomes a sort of unholy addiction...a retreat from the hurly-burly of real life into an evermore exclusive gathering of similarly-minded souls who derive comfort from the little club they have unintentionally formed.

Soon they feel a real sense of ownership over the proceedings in their thread, and they regard new or occasional visitors with suspicion, indulgent tolerance, or lofty disdain...depending on what sort of mood they're in that day.

Then it becomes a holy crusade to maintain the thread on a daily basis, enlarge it, expound upon its unique and special value, and defend its continued existence against any possible threats.

In short: intellectual incest!

I put it to you that the Walkabouts thread is beginning to show strong signs of becoming just such a thread, while the MOABS is the ultimate example of the type. ;-D

Well, I've already seeded the WAV thread with very high quality models of scansion, rhythm, rhyme, structure and deep reflection, but they seem to have fallen on rather infertile ground. At least here people TRY to emulate these virtues!

I too am attempting to turn them in just such a direction, Amos, but they are mostly so caught up in "catching and burning the witch" right now that it's very hard to get them to be creative.

Isn't that scansion thing what you do to a rope you're tying a bowline in after you pass the running end through the bight? Or am I thinking of a Prussik Knot?

No, that's the rabbit test your college girlfriend told you about.

A prusik knot might be a good way to climb out of the morass that is that other thread. I've used them to climb out of crevasses.

That WAV thread looks like overkill--verbally dueling with an unarmed man does seem to be taking unfair advantage.

From the Impressive and Unlikely Website of Arunachal Epitome dot Com, insights into the meandering mischief of Khandu:

"Bomdila, Oct 01: Chief Minister Mr. Khandu after taking stock of flood damaged areas of Bomdila, the District Hq of West Kameng district said, "We need to comeup with proper planning on the preventive measures for meeting lesser damages during natural calamities". It may be mentioned here that the torrential rain on June 26 last had caused a massive destruction, which left whole of the West Kameng district and Tawang cut -off from rest of the world almost a fortnight.

Addressing a mammoth gathering at officer club here, the Chief Minister said, "We cannot blame totally to the nature for its fury, it is the people who teases the nature without caring about the consequences".He showed concern and sympathy for the loss of property and livestock during the flood meted by the people. Mr. Khandu, however, assured to provide relief and urged the DC and local M.L.A's of the district to identify the victims according to the magnitude of their losses. He further urged them to expedite the restoration work of the sinked roads and directed the engineers to conduct survey for alternate routes if restoration was not possible. The C.M. opined that improper drainage system was the major factor behind the massive destruction. He further encouraged the gathering to indulge in plantation works around their house , which he thought to a certain extent would minimize the chance of landslide during monsoon season.

Mr. Khandu highlighted the mega package amounting to over Rs. 20,000 Crore under Prime Minister's package to the state and he appealed the mass to be a partner towards the state's development. "Once this massive infrastructural development package announced by the Prime Minister is successfully implemented, it will herald a new era in the frontier state of Arunachal Pradesh," asserted Mr. Khandu. "

I, for one, would not want to be around when these hard-used people discover the speaker to whom they devoted so much column-space is actually an itinerant blues player from Mississippi.

Forget Khandu, MOM has to worry about other turkeys right now.

What are her plans for the holidays? Is she going to brine a fresh turkey again this year, or shape one out of spam? (The turkey probably costs less than all of those cans of spam, so this is an esthetic question, not one of economics.)

I plan on going a-hunting and blow a wild turkey to smithereens just for her. Then I'll enjoy Wild Turkey.

I'll also shoot some wild sweet potatoes, wild cranberries, wild dinner rolls, wild beans, wild pies (not cow), and wild stuffing.

Fashioning a turkey out of spam? I knew that all spam came from turkeys, but this is the first time I have heard the reverse proposition.

MAke it a real turkey. Soak in buttermilk for 12 hours before cooking.

Anyone who would soak in buttermilk for 12 hours IS a real turkey. My brother tried it once and was followed by every cat in the neighborhood for over a month. After a few days no one would sit near him and after a few more no one could stand to be near him. Eventually we tried bathing him in vinegar, which turned the buttermilk residue to low-fat cheese and apart from attracting mice (but that was okay, 'cause we made him sleep outdoors) he was nearly as tolerable as he ever was, which isn't saying much.

Brine, not buttermilk. Makes that turkey might tasty!

No recommended for humans unless you want to become a sailor overnight. (An old salt, of course.)

I'm goim' down to Imperial eEach
A bit later in the day,
The mermaids there sing each to each,
With not too much to say.
I've got a couple of friends down there
Who like to pick and play
We're going throw back a coupla beers
And sing the afternoon away
Until we're through,
All tangled up in Bluuuue......

Sorry--been listening to late Dylan cuts this morning.

Mom...keep on keeping on, like a bird who flew, tangled up in blue....

If I may intrude for a moment on this happy gathering of the Gang of Three...."Tangled Up In Blue" might better be described as coming from the "middle" period of Dylan, not the "late"...given that it's from 1974 and Dylan's career has stretched from about 1962 to the present. I think that "late" Dylan would be more from about 1990 to now.

There's MMario too. But I think of us as just sort of affiliate members. We don't post often enough to be appointed to the Central Committee. Still, we are willing to serve as loyal workers and advance the Party Plan.

Mom! Mom! I took the ol' .30-30 out to the range today and sighted it in! It shoots about .75 inches high at 25 yards, which should put it about 1.5 inches high at 50 yards and 2.8 inches at 100 yards, which is just about where it should be given the "sine wave" function of the ballistics! I used a target and would have shot 130/150 with 2X had we been keeping score!

Coooooooool!

LH:

I suspect you are as much a part of the core Central Party of MOAB as anyone, pal.

You are right in a linear scale about when Dylan's late work began. Having been alive and full of zest when he first started passing the basket in the VIllage, having seen him pick up his first elkectric in public at Newport, I have a weighted-scale perspective which is logarithmic. The values from 1962 to 1969 are the early and middle years, and anything after that is later.

Awwww, honey--here, take a couple of globs of raw honey and mix in a teaspoon or two of cinammon powder, and swaller that mixture down. Make sure you get lots of water into you, too. And sleep some extra if you can.

Take some of that nice Echinacea drops, and a few thousand units of C--take it with some yoghurt if you have some.

Then get a long night's sleep, and in the morning be ALLLLL welll.

Love,

Mom

Amos, you left out the whisk(e)y.

LH, with this rifle I sighted to the center of the target (hunting hold) instead of a six-o'clock target hold (ye olde "pumpkin on a post" sight picture). When I used the six-o'clock hold for the first three round it shot center, but low. So I lowered the rear sight, which raises the point of aim, as much as I could. That did it and I could mentally compensate for the rest. Fortunately, what wind there was came from directly behind me so I didn't have to correct right or left (difficult using a rifle with fixed, iron sights you'd have to adjust sideways with a punch and a hammer). If you're really interested in the details, which I sincerely doubt, you can search the Web for "sight picture" and find more information than you'll ever want or need to know.

Janie, in addition to Amos' recommendation, it always helps if you have a cat who wants nothing more than to curl up with you in your sick bed and purr at you every time you awaken.

I also find that guafuisen (sold in tablet form as Mucinex here in US) will help break up the congestion. Get the straight stuff, not the stuff with other things like dextromerthorphan mixed in.

My doctor and pharmacist say that Mucinex is the same guiafensin that is in Duratuss (the Rx) but Duratuss is twice the strength on one Mucinex. To get the guiafensin cheaper go to Walmart (one of the few times I do, for cheap drugs) and buy their store knock-off of Mucinex. It's a heckufa lot cheaper.

Read between the lines and you see how to get the Rx strength at a significant savings.

Well, I was standing there in the bedroom getting dressed and out of the corner of my eye (and out the window) saw what had to be a heckuva big squirrel moving along my backyard fence (golf course side).

Nope, not a squirrel.

Coyote.

The really hazardous thing is when you mistake the bear at the bird feeder for a large squirrel, and attempt to drive it away by waving a broom in its face and yelling "Shoo!"

What the hell, when it boils down to it how would you rather die when your time comes....by inches slowly and painfully in a hospital bed? Or in one short moment with a squirrel's jaws locked in your jugular?

I know which way I'd rather go. ;-D
