"Hey, Harry!"
"Yeah?"
"Watcha doin'?"
"Layin' carpet in the den."

Pause...

"She got a sister?"

Carpeting aside, I still think the best joke I've heard lately had the punchline of Dubya turning to Cheney and asking "How much is a brazillian?"

Then there was the Vietnamese soldier who resented being asked to do renovation work on war memorials on the say-so of bigwigs who had political pull. A veteran sergeant took him aside and said, "Listen to me, if you know what is good for you -- this is a great opportunity! Carpet Dien!".

I can tell you this much...if I were President, I'd put Rapaire on the Supreme Court, and SRS too. It would make American history much more enjoyable to study some day.

I thought I would not be alive
When mother reached 9-5-5-5
But here I am and here is She
Now grown beyond 10 to the three!
Nine times beyond, she's brightly grown
And still her children stay at home'
And though she's ancient, pale and faint
They bring her still each childish plaint
Each accusation of another
Each wish to punish Sis or Brother
Each sibling hiss, fraternal stab
Ah, woe! The trials of our MOAB!
But still she carries on, and strives,
WIshing her children better lives;
And now has reached nine thousand
Five hundred
And fifty-five.

uh-oh! Amos just called Mom *OLD*

he is gonna get it!

He is in such big trouble!

I hope she doesn't ground him, not with the Getaway coming up.

Grinding stuff fine, and adding a spark, even of inspiration, is a bad idea. It either explodes, or complains about unfair editing...

Without quote marks, it can be whatever I want to write.

Bruce:

My issue was not with the pedantic details of your editing, but with your meaning. There is a large gap between "small" and "fine", especially in the resoannty overtones.

Of course you are free to type whatever you want to type, good buddy; I will always defend your sovereign and Gawd-given right to do so, no matter how much I harass you on your exercise of it! :D

Amos,

I chose NOT to use fine, knowing the various meanings...

fine 1    (fn) KEY

ADJECTIVE:
fin·er , fin·est
Of superior quality, skill, or appearance: a fine day; a fine writer.
Very small in size, weight, or thickness: fine type; fine paper.

Free from impurities.
Metallurgy Containing pure metal in a specified proportion or amount: gold 21 carats fine.
Very sharp; keen: a blade with a fine edge.
Thin; slender: fine hairs.
Exhibiting careful and delicate artistry: fine china. See Synonyms at delicate.
Consisting of very small particles; not coarse: fine dust.

Subtle or precise: a fine difference.
Able to make or detect effects of great subtlety or precision; sensitive: has a fine eye for color.
Trained to the highest degree of physical efficiency: a fine racehorse.
Characterized by refinement or elegance.
Satisfactory; acceptable: Handing in your paper on Monday is fine.
Being in a state of satisfactory health; quite well: I'm fine. And you?
Used as an intensive: a fine mess.

_______________________________________________________________

And my SELECTED word,

small    (smôl) KEY

ADJECTIVE:
small·er , small·est
Being below the average in size or magnitude.
Limited in importance or significance; trivial: a small matter.
Limited in degree or scope: small farm operations.
Lacking position, influence, or status; minor: "A crowd of small writers had vainly attempted to rival Addison" (Thomas Macaulay).
Unpretentious; modest: made a small living; helped the cause in my own small way.
Not fully grown; very young.
Narrow in outlook; petty: a small mind.
Having been belittled; humiliated: Their comments made me feel small.
Diluted; weak. Used of alcoholic beverages.
Lacking force or volume: a small voice.

I hope you can see why I chose the one I did, from my viewpoint...

As I tried to tell you, the word I was using, for good reason, was SMALL. YOU are trying to tell me what I can write.

"Gawd, what insufferable pedantry. I was completely aware of why you chose as you did, which is why I objected. "

"You grind pretty small yourself, for a poetical type, if I may say so"

You MAY SAY so, but have made no effort to establish the validity of your statement. You might want to include an "IMO" somewhere in there.

Bruce:

A word of warning from a fellow, if vastly more accomplished, poet:

When the Himalayan peasant meets the he-bear in his pride,
He shouts to scare the monster, who will often turn aside.
But the she-bear thus accosted rends the peasant tooth and nail.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.

When Nag the basking cobra hears the careless foot of man,
He will sometimes wriggle sideways and avoid it if he can.
But his mate makes no such motion where she camps beside the trail.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.

When the early Jesuit fathers preached to Hurons and Choctaws,
They prayed to be delivered from the vengeance of the squaws.
'Twas the women, not the warriors, turned those stark enthusiasts pale.
For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.

I occasionally quote from Tennyson's "In Memoriam, AHH" with the "Nature, red in tooth and claw" line, but there is less of it that is so applicable as Kipling.

Chocolate is good, but a nice batch of smoked salmon, that will do it every time!

Mom, it was cool enough today that I cooked a big pot of turkey stew and the kids made pie crust shapes (cut out with cookie cutters) to eat with it. Mmmmmm! Meanwhile, with the cool weather, I'm wondering why I bothered to buy another dog house. Both girls have been curling up happily together in one. (They're so cute!)

Folks like Amos will just have to take our words for it that it cools off in the fall. San Diego looks like it's having it's typical warmish weather. Rapaire has probably been out shoveling snow already. Bunn--I don't know about your weather. And where is RR these days?

Chit chat BS doesn't exactly cleanse the pallet, but it does move us along numerically. I believe I already placed dibs on 10,000.

Of course, the pallets out in my yard are very clean already. The palette, on the other hand, could use a little swish of wine, I think, to make it happy at the moment. :)

There's might be snow on the roof, but there's fire in the furnace, he he.

Actually, there's a nice coating of snow up on Scout Mountain. And the Heart of the Valley, over in the direction of the Tetons, had 2 inches of snow this morning. It was 30-ish here at 0600 today, and only got up to around 55. (All degrees in F., not C. or K.)

One more day of the Conference to go. I'm exhausted, and so to bed. (Alone -- Pat's at a meeting in Denver.)

I have a few nice old quilts around here. It's nice to see that quilts in general are receiving this kind of scholarship and attention. (My great grandmother made most of mine, and wisely, she dated them. They go back to the 1860s). A couple of years ago I asked an old very dear friend of mine if she'd leave me one of her quilts in her will. She did better than that--she mailed it last year and it arrived on my birthday. It's a beautiful one she made back in the days when she was doing a lot of sewing. She's 90 now, and not doing much of that, so I was glad she could part with this--it is precious.

Hey, Rapaire, if Pat's not home an there is snow on the roof and a furnace inside, what's a fellow do in a case like this? Extra fencing practice? Lay carpet? Read a good book?

Sleep. I'm still exhausted. And I can't sleep late tomorrow, as I have a Conference follow-up meeting at 8:30. I haven't been to work in two days. I spent 3 hours yesterday trying to get the Conference's Internet Cafe to work (the setup instructions left a lot to be desired) and finally succeeded. I also spent a lot of time discussing the fact that my library is going to have to take the (SQL-based) servers since the place that has time has announced that it's pulling out of the local 23-member consortium. I presented a program on library history, arranged for Nancy Pearl to autograph a bunch of action figurines (one each old and new), coordinated with the hotel on banquet counts and so one, made sure that speakers got paid, and lent a rifle to the Intellectual Freedom group ("Censor this, sucker!").

The double set of Nancy Pearl action figurines raised USD 90.00 each, and they sold 7 of them at that price. (These were my personal gift to the IF auction.)

No, that's okay Bunn. I've seen the aurora dancing its carefree heel-and-toe as it gazed upon strange sights on the marge of Lake Lebarge.

(Did you know that there really WAS a steamer aground in Lake Lebarge and that Robert Service knew of it? Believe it or not, the name of the boat was the "Olive May." You can read about this and many other things in Laura Berton's wonderful book, I married the Klondike. Yes, she was Pierre's Berton's maternal parent.)

Space cadet? That sounds exciting. The academy is currently situated some light-years away*, but getting closer, fast. I'm not convinced about the re-incarnation bit. It also sounds exciting, but in a different sort of way...

*Remember, in space time, a light-year is a distance and a time.

I'm certain of the reincarnation bit. You see, in a previous life I was at the Battle of Agincourt. A French infantryman, I was trampled by the retreat of the knights; my body was pretty well mangled and was left as food for the rooks.

Before that I was a Prince of Burma, but because of succession issues I was strangled at birth.

I've a fly (swatted), a peasant maiden (promiscuous but ugly, died at 14 of plague) and a hellgrammite (eaten by a trout).

I've also been the Emperor Of The Sixteen Universes, and a courtesan to Its Imperial Awesomeness Aalaadfbij XIT. In the first case I died of old age and in the latter I was assassinated by a jealous rival.

Now I shall tell it: yesterday was the 32nd anniversary of the day I was wed.

Oh, how we danced on the day we were wed!

Well, no, we didn't, but we did have a party after the reception. My youngest brother had a bit too much to drink and pantomined an automated brewery. Others did other things. (The reception, for whatever it's worth, was at the Betheseda Naval Medical Center's Officers Open Mess. It was pretty formal. The party was somewhat less formal, even though most of the guests remained mostly clothed. No shootings, knifings, broken furniture and/or windows, or pregnancies resulted from the party.)

The Conference is over. Nancy Pearl left yesterday. Carol Brey-Casiano left today. I got my rifle back and it's again locked up. Tomorrow I have to attend a Board meeting in the morning and then write a report. My only hope is that income exceeded expenses.

I also walked away with some books and some recorded books; the latter I got for free.

Now I am more or less okay. Now I can get on with another unpleasant job.

The end of your last post makes it a little harder to ask if you got your wife back. One hopes this was a pleasant occurrence indeed!

No response to the pimple charge, eh? Just gonna blow it off? At least make up a good story about it. Give me some doggerel about how "X" and "Z" may sound alike but the resulting words have vastly different meanings or origins.

Maybe you want to do this before you balance the books. You may not feel like fiction writing after that.

To live in Texas and not know of the famous "Ten In Texas" brand is like living in San Diego and never hearing of Califonia's famous sons, Joaquin Murieta and Don Diego de la Vega. Or, for that matter, living around here and not knowing of Henry Plummer. I let out a large, heartfelt sigh.

Nothing of any importance to anyone anywhere at any time ever happened in Sussex. Sussex is the most boring part of...is it England? It's so boring I can't bring myself to actually remember Sussex. I mean, come on: Alicia, Countess of Eu? Walter Krips? Hastings, where Harold said, "Well, it's better than a poke in ey..."? The Gallowes of Whoorne? Paul Lewis?
