H. P. Lovecraft and D. H. Lawrence were really named Roger? I had an uncle named Roger. Could they possibly be my Uncle Roger? H. P. and D. H. share a lot with my uncle besides the name "Roger" -- for example, they're all dead. Wow. The unwritten books: The Horror Over Innsmouth and Lovers...Lady Chatterly's Rats In The Walls....

Well, it's not that they were all named Roger. I said some folks. But it's a complicated world and the hunger for clarity can make a man want to erase his whole name and just call himself Zed.

There are other reasons, not least of which are Horatio, Dionysius, Dithyrambo, and Heracles, all names which end up getting one laughed off the playground.

Lemme tell ya of a story 'bout a man named Zed,
Mellow Californian barely kept his family bed
Then one day he was out a-buyin' food
When out of the produce came a good-lookin' nude.

Girl, that is. A woman.

Next thing ya know ol' Zed's....

Nah, I can't finish this on a family thread.

H.G. Wells.   W.H. Auden. The list goes on and on.

It's foul, disgusting, perverted, degenerate, revolting, repugnant, loathsome, vile, scandalous, appalling, repellent, shocking, and abhorrent to everyone except those scum who revel in such things. You will never hear it sung anywhere outside of the Legion Hovel.

That's pure BS, Rapaire. You work so you can buy guns. I work so I can sing songs with friends. And thereby hangs a tale.

I work so I can build a greater shrine to Shatner and one day secure a date with Winona Ryder.

You'd probably have more fun with guns and swords, Little Hawk. Ask Rapaire to teach you. He'd be happy to.

I used to have a lot of fun with guns and swords. Matter of fact, I have a set of samurai swords here.

Hearing aids, huh? Too much time in the brass section? The firing range?
Surely not the dusty, whispering stacks that have brought you to this pass?
It is surely loud sounds and wrong sounds
That take the hearing from the mind
And turn it low; or else
You have placed yourself where things
Were being said you never meant to hear.
Surrounded by those who insist
On using their gifts for the art
To turn out bland noises of no merit.
Eyes are for eyes, when sundown's near;
But who would not give his heart
For just one ear?

Yes, BB, one set. The long sword and the short sword. Long swords are more popular, but a short sword can be handier in constricted circumstances, and it is also possible to fight using both swords at the same time.

As is pointed out quite well in The Book of Five Rings.

Amos: from explosions and gunfire and helicopters and unmuffled generators and air-compressor-driven power tools and motor pools and too-loud noises in general. And I wear and have worn for years hearing protection when I cut the grass, blow snow, fire guns, use a chainsaw or any other power tool...but by then the damage was done. So I have a constant tinnitus and bilateral hearing loss in the upper registers (above about 4 Khz) and I will be fitted for hearing aids on November 6 at, I believe, 1 p.m. and I will gladly pay to the VA whatever the co-pay is. The full enjoyment of music has been too long absent.

And I am very thankful, to science and whoever is turning the crank. The aids will be very small and sit above my ears, with a tiny pipe going down into the ear canal. Like this, and in fact it could be an Oticon Delta that I get. I understand that the VA dispenses very, very good hearing aids. (The going cost is about USD 1,600 each. Yes, I will happily pay the co-pay.)

My mother had expensive hearing aids, but the last couple of weeks of her life she wouldn't wear them, so it was very difficult to speak with her. One had fallen on the floor at the hospital and a nurse accidentally crushed it underfoot. So she wanted to save the other one for a safer time and place to use it. But there wasn't one.

My Dad's hearing was bad most of his life. It got ruined by the sound of the tank he drove in WWII...those things made a LOT of noise, specially if you were inside them.

He refused to wear a hearing aid, but finally was sort of forced to. When he did finally try them, he didn't like them, because he could now hear all sorts of small distracting sounds all around that he had not heard for decades, and it drove him nuts. He could not seem to adjust them to suit him. So he refused to wear them.

You just can't win with some people.

Dammit, Ma, now don't you know
We hate to find you hanging low,
Cruising the darker edges of the town,
Your numbers stalled, and buttons open down
To nearly your navel; that's no decent way
To travel, for a woman of your age.
Consider the great numbers now found sitting
On your brow, and find a way befitting,
More meet for such a gracious lady,
And stray no more to lowly dives and shady
Storefronts of the lustful, drunk and craven;
Mom, come up! And cease your misbehaving!

Don't I know it! Chongo is here, eating me out of house and home and attracting occasional raids from old enemies, most of whom seem to be gorillas! I get postcards and handwritten letters from Penelope Rutledge telling me how wonderful life is in the Cotswolds and what an ass her husband is. William Shatner would call me more often, but he's terribly busy right now. Shane still owes me $20 which I foolishly lent him in a weak moment. My life is in a state of confusion, and it's all because of these various created characters.

But I have received no input of any recognizable sort from freds. I do not believe in freds. I think freds is a creation of some total idiot, someone without even a shred of mental ability or moral fiber, a drooling, knuckle-dragging ingrate of the lowest sort, a shambling, incoherent and probably impotent fencepost of a person, only fit to be peed on by a passing dog.

And back to English:

Here's the original:

I notice that Babel Fish is onto this game--it provided the original English text when I converted from one to another without opening a fresh window. It gave me the original English text when I came back around. But I figured out how to make it work a little harder to add in the usual confusion to make it a really good translation of florid language!

Dear George,

It bemuses me, in sooth, to have somehow become the article of focus of your wrath and your antagonism against the sins of your own imagination. I suppose, in a subtle and indirect way, it is some form of compliment that I have been elected to represent the target of your many understandable resentments, because it implies somehow that I have taken on an importance comparable to the other inventions in your busy world. To be raised thusly to the importance of such luminaries as Chongo and Chinga, Shane and the fictitious Shatner is really quite flattering, even if placed more as counterpart than companion.

Nevertheless, I urge you to take up the study of some form of engineering as a remedy to your tendency to overheat in these marvelous bursts of creativity. It will serve as a stabilizing influence to take on some field of effort that depends on proof, at least in actual application in an agreed-upon time-space continuum.

I have discovered the most remeakable answer to the long convoluted threads in which Little Hawk and I -- like bonded heros of ancient times -- have held our stance, back to back, swinging our vorpal blades against the bitter, methodical, materialistic probability theory of such curmudgeons as Bill D. and his ilk, who endlessly seek to rebut the notion of any spiritual existence or ability.

The answer lies in an understanding of computational theory and the nature of Turing machines.

From Wikipedia, the following observations can be found:

"1. Anything a real computer can compute, a Turing machine can also compute. For example: "A Turing machine can simulate any type of subroutine found in programming languages, including recursive procedures and any of the known parameter-passing mechanisms" (Hopcroft and Ullman p. 157). Thus, a statement about the limitations of Turing machines will also apply to real computers.

2. The difference lies only with the ability of a Turing machine to manipulate an unbounded amount of data. However, given a finite amount of time, a Turing machine (like a real machine) can only manipulate a finite amount of data.

3. Like a Turing machine, a real machine can have its storage space enlarged as needed, by acquiring more disks or other storage media. If the supply of these runs short, the Turing machine may become less useful as a model. But the fact is that neither Turing machines nor real machines need astronomical amounts of storage space in order to perform useful computation. The processing time required is usually much more of a problem.

4. Turing machines describe algorithms independent of how much memory they utilize. There is a limit to the memory possessed by any current machine, but this limit can rise arbitrarily in time. Turing machines allow us to make statements about algorithms which will (theoretically) hold forever, regardless of advances in conventional computing machine architecture."

The key lies in item #2, which points out that a Turing machine -- the embodiment and seed-bed of the whole field of computational theory and information processing -- is constrained to operate with finite data sets. This of course makes sense. Unlimited data sets completely contradict the fundamental concept of computation in time arriving at a result.

But what Little Hawk understands, Lord bless him, is that it is the soul that is itself both the generator and appreciator of data, and brings it into existence in instants of creation in the fiery flux of raw experience.

By definition, therefore, the data set relating to this numinous Self is unlimited and therefore cannot be approximated by any computational method derived from a Turing machine; and as a corollary, is also capable of states beyond those which any Turing based state-machine can embrace in its set of possible solutions, or describe in its algorithm-derived set of possible outputs.

This explains the magic of MOAB; it is a non-algorithmic repository of created reality-states safely embedded in the spidery webs of a cyber-environment which, in turn, is erected and presumably safeguarded by Turing machines! A lovely apparent paradox, easily dispelled but amusing in its presumption.
