There are things in life top be grateful for. For example, a year ago at this time, Stilly had interrupted putting in her new floor in order to prepare against a tornado which had just missed wiping out W in Crawford. And Rapaire was throwing up in D.C. and ruining his vacation.

So far, Rapaire sounds okay this year.

Mom:

I know you have been waiting for the others to get home to share your new home-made Christmas Cookies, and I am sure they will be here soon; but just for now I will have a few off the edge of the plate to make sure they are still fresh, okay?? You know how Rapaire is once he starts hobnobbing with lobbyists. It brings out his inner Republican...

A quick look in before heading to bed. I'm bushed. The turkey was great. Thanks for the reminder of the floor a year ago. I'm going to finish some more of that work this holiday break. At this rate I might finish by the time I retire. :-/

Christmas cookies on the platter,
Cooling while our Mom gets madder,
She loves making MOABs fatter
Waiting drives her mad as hatters.
Time goes by and things get badder,
Stilly tiptoes, pitter-patter,
Janie, Bunn and Hawk all flatter
Other Moms, while ours grows sadder.
And Rapaire, that midnight padder,
Shun like fat-cat cad her
Wishes, leaves her feelings flatter,
Drinking, laughing, making chatter,
Where the power-dollars clatter.
Meanwhile, my heart just grows gladder,
Looking at that Xmas platter!
Back above I quickly sat her,
At the top, our stalwart Mater!
Up from the pit of past's dark adders,
Come, now friends! Now up and at her!
End your nounless nabob natter,
Make your neighbors cease their pratter,
Talk of Rome, Tehran or Qatar,
Come! Help Mom back up the ladder!

We haven't seen Bunn around here in ages. Another reminder.

One of my guests last night dropped a plastic sack with her knitting in it out in the yard. She drove back a few minutes after leaving the house when she realized it had gone missing, but we looked in the house, not the yard. I had an email overnight--"can I come back and look again?"

When I went to get the paper this morning it was still pretty dark, but I spotted a green ball and a knitting needle on the lawn near a cactus, and I walked around and found another at the street curb next door. (It froze last night, no rain, so these were in great shape.) I returned to the house to fix an early breakfast for Caroline who had to drive back to her college town to work this morning, and she dressed and went to look for more, returning with another ball of yarn and a tangled frozen mat of green. It hadn't been so fortunate as the balls. The 12 inches or so of knitting had landed in the sandy wet spot at the bottom of the driveway across the street, and when my neighbor drove in after work (midnight) he drove across it. Caroline returned with a stiff plank of wool and leaves and sand all frozen into an odd-shaped tile, suspended on a knitting needle.

I thawed the yarn, rinsed it in ice cold water, used a little gentle hand soap to lift the sand colored stain, and though the "ball" that had been attached to it is a leafy tangle broken in a few places, it looks like the project survived. She called this morning and was amazed to learn that her knitting had wandered over three yards and into the woods (we still didn't find one set of circular needles. They may have been picked up by an early dog walker.)

I'll pop this in the mail this afternoon and though they don't advertise Sunday pickup, my post office usually has one. She should get this tomorrow. She was amazed, and said "I'll have to blog this."

We be of one mind, ye and I
In the jungle of memes
Where the wild news flies
Under the dark and purpled skies
Seeking newer, better themes,
For the dinner of the many heads,
In the blogs, and in the threads.
Some great inner resource testing,
Something new and interesting,
Beyond the sleepy dreaming beds,
For the blogs, and for the threads,
For the news at break of morn
Comes a tale of frozen yarns,
Passing tales our friends have said,
To the blogs, and to the threads,
Gleaning from the purpled haze,
News and tidbits for our days,
Filling all the busy heads,
Through the blogs, and through the threads.

This is why Mom is _so_ important. She is the meta-thread, and the Uberblog, and the arche-meme. She is the mother.

That doesn't sound right. I can "hear" someone in a Mel Blanc kind of voice saying "I hate meeces to pieces" but Sylvester doesn't sound right. He was too busy chasing the bird. It wasn't Tom of Tom and Jerry. I don't think. They didn't even talk.

I don't remember Mr. Jinx. What cartoon? By the same name, or in with someone else? All I can bring forward from my deep childhood cartoon-viewing history is that one line. I need more to bring a face into focus.

Now does the Mother of All BS
On Christmas Joy her careworn glances rest,
And in the Saturnalia hour of light,
Rejoices at the coming End of Night!
When sure upon the Earth there rises Dawn,
The Spring of Springs, the growing light comes on,
And every heart new warming does proclaim.
And every mind in search of self-styld fame,
Doth from its Winter's weary labours rest,
And sallies out to welcome New BS!
Marry then fellows of the BS Hall,
Come Stilly, Rustic, Tweed, come one, come all,
And bring forth like Spring blossoms from the West,
The warming gentle winds of fresh BS,
And thus dispel the shadopws of the East,
And on our Mother's life, bring ye New Lease.
So here's a glass of brightest BS cheer,
A merry BS Xmas, and BS New Year!!

"Los Angeles is on track to end the year with fewer than 400 homicides for the first time in nearly four decades -- a hopeful milestone for a city so long associated with gangs, drive-by shootings and sometimes random violence.

With 386 killings recorded as of this morning, the city has experienced one-third the number of homicides it did in 1992. The last year with a comparably low figure was 1970, when Los Angeles had a million fewer residents, guns were far less prevalent and street gangs were a much smaller part of life in urban neighborhoods."

Note the crime rate in Los Angeles has plummeted directly as the post count in MOAB has constantly risen higher.

Coincidence? I don't think so!!

When I woke up on Christmas,
Our Mom was half-way down,
And no-one offered her a post,
And no--one came around.
It seemed so cruel and thoughtless,
Leaving her hang that way,
Without a post to bring her joy,
On a crispy CHristmas Day.

And so I wrote this little poem
To help Mom towards the top,
To get her kids to rally round
Or a stranger, or a cop,
Or just some starving pregnany girl,
With no place else to stay,
Might come give birth on MOAB's floor,
On this crispy Christmas Day.

And then I saw, upon her hearth,
Six boxes bright and gay,
Wrapped up ii silver, red and green,
With little cards to say,
"We love you Mom, you're in our hearts,
Even when far away!'
And I knew someone had brought them by,
That crispy Christmas Day.

(Sorry....I just can't finish this right now...umpffff...brrfff... Some other time ,may be...)

No, just too rich a diet for my lean, keen eagle-bright mind. And no bragging rights to you, sirrah, who wanders off for days on end without so much as a postcard.

Barky and her room mate came down Friday. Yesterday they spent the whole morning in the kitchen, and we had a groaning board of turkey, hand-made mashed potatoes, broccoli and squash made into colorful delicious patterns, whole grain bread and fine red wine. Rich imported coffees and a home-made ambrosia dessert that melted on the tongue.

Then we did a wonderful gifting thing, which is our Chrisatmas Eve tradition. I got a hands-free phone unit for the car which I really liike, and we gort new flatware which we really needed.

And Mom got a cuddle blanket for comfort.

This morning we did stockings!! I got the Dangerous Book For Boys. Barky has a wicked good eye for a gift, eh?

Now twenty-one two-fifty
Of posts have come and gone
And vanished in the winter air
Of a crisp, bright Christmas morn.
Today, there's peace in Bethlehem,
Where folks stroll with aplomb,
And this is due to the rising light
Of our ever-conscious Mom.

Yes there's nothing like BS for the holiday
When winter's bitter ruth
Gives way to something warmer,
And closer to the Truth.
There's nothing like BS for the Solstice night,
Knowing the spring doth come;
And with it, joy, and babies,
And, better still, more Mom!

We've had a lot of comings and goings since the weekend. This morning we opened gifts and then before Moonglow and her boyfriend headed out to the boyfriend's family events, the four of us stood in the kitchen and tested sliced bites of 8 different little "game" sausages my sister sent. Pheasant, duck, elk, bison, antelope, venison, boar, and caribou. Moonglow tried to lay claim to them to take them to her home in the north, but we all wanted to try them. So they're tested and now they're in little snack bags and a cooler headed out to other households for the novelty taste test.

It's a beautiful day, and I don't think we're going to try to do a fancy dinner. We're too dinnered-out after the big blowout on Saturday and the hot turkey sandwiches we had late at night on the 23rd. A good walk with the dogs, maybe a movie this evening. Right now my son is in watching some of his new Simpsons episodes (years 9 and 10). This could take a while.

It's leftovers and re-runs for us tonight, the last of our Xmas celebration. TOmorrow early Barky and Co., head Nawth again, bound for LA and San Jose, to wqhich they know the way, tumtumtumteetumtytumtytum, and we head to the offices for a couple of days. Then the New Year week looms and we head for LA and thence up to Mudlark's in the central Coast region, where the vinyards groan with their burdens and the wine flows all year around.

One of the nicver things I got for Christmas was a final stainless-steel-cased compass from the Dalvey company in the Scottish Highlands. The instruction manual goes to the trouble of pointing out, however, that it is not suitable for use in the Southern hemisphere. So my wife wanted to know what they use in the Southern hemisphere, and I told her they used a Tates.

"What's a Tates?", she said, all innocent, like.

"It's a special compass for use in the southern hemisphere," I explained. "You don't see them up here, where they don't work. Up here, he who has a Tates is lost...".

There was a moment's thundering silence, while three female brains clicked and whirred, and then I was overwhelmed by flying Christmas wrappings, some of them still containing hard objects.

A trumpeter in the house ALWAYS means a Merry Christmas and presages a Wonderful New Year. Of course, anytime there is a trumpeter in the house it's the best of luck!

As Mom knows, since no one visited the poor thing since Tea Time yesterday! I am traveling, but you others have not that excuse! For shame! Fortunately I had some Super SOS and a few English muffins upon which to serve it with me and Mom had a nice, nourishing, breakfast.
