I rebuilt the wheelie for the kayak, Mom. The axle was too long. Now it is snug. We shall see how it handles the weight.

Janie, I got a lot farther on the garden today because the rain held off until between 4 and 5 (All Things Considered was on the radio in the garage as I came and went to put tools away in a hurry). So the Merlot that accompanied my dinner has about put me to sleep (I thought I was going to have lamb over rice, but the frozen meat turned out to be a petite sirloin, so I had the rice on the side and the chard on the side and no Middle Eastern spices or yogurt over the top).

And I fell asleep on the couch about 15 minutes into the first movie. Woke up a little after 11:00 with a painful neck because of the awkward angle, and stumbled off to bed.

One more cuppa then I'm gonna go finish potting stuff up, mop floors, then watch more movies. If I had a fishing pole, I'd go down to the river and do a little fishing.

All this industry and food!! Wotta life, eh?

Things sure got quiet around here with Rapaire out looking for the perfect teton and Little Hawk out mending his ways.

I have to write two chapters to day. May the Force be with me...

I have a creek with fish, but don't have a current viable fishing rod. Funny how that works (I wouldn't eat these urban fish).

Wise lady. Those urban fish, man, they are only after one thing...

One is a chemical compound, the other an automotive valve.

POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION (PCV) - system for removing blow-by gases from the crankcase and returning them, through the carburetor intake manifold, to the combustion chamber, where the recirculated hydrocarbons are burned, thus reducing hydrocarbon emissions to the atmosphere. A PCV valve, operated by engine vacuum, controls the flow of gases from the crankcase. PCV systems have been standard equipment in all U.S. cars since 1963, replacing the simpler vent, or breather, that allowed crankcase vapors to be emitted to the atmosphere.

POLYCHLORINATED BIPHENYL, a synthetic, organic chemical once widely used in electrical equipment, specialized hydraulic systems, heat transfer systems, and other industrial products. Highly toxic and a potent carcinogen.

An urban fish often gets confused about which it is he really desires.

Hi MOM. I et early so as to not have probable storms snuff out the charcoal. Only had one little spate of sprinkles. Don't eat much meat, so don't grill often and am prone to overcook the meat.

However, the steak was absolutely perfect! Somewhere between medium-rare and medium, which is just how I likes 'em. Fixed the asparagus on the grill also. The whole bunch of it, drizzled with olive oil and lemon and cracked pepper. 'Twere also perfect.

Ate out on the patio and watched the birds in the Mulberry.

Haven't spoken or heard a word spoken all day. Sorry none of yuse could join me but I sure do love the peace and quiet.

Right here, right now, I am content.

It has been a quiet day here in Lake Woebegone.

Writing target only 25% done so far, but oh, the distractive delights!!

I finished Candide and Crome Yellow and am now partway through Daisy Miller, a wonderful portrait of an American girl is Switzerland in the early part of the 20th c.

It is a strange timetravel going back to these old books I read in my youth. What happened was, I found a package of 50 of them for 99 cents I could download to my iPhone. It is such easy reading--lighter than abook, with flickable pages back and forth--a wonder, and perfectly pleasant to read, backlit so you can see it in shadowy places. A gem.

So I am wandering the corridors of time with Aldous huxley and William James, perfectly delightful. I could do it forever.

And I never use the I pod I inherited from Sum Yung Sun, because I can't figure out consistently how to navigate it.

I guess that southern California sun on the brain must be good for something.

It is in the blood in these parts--the proximity of Silicon Valley, or the climate, or perhaps the EMF fields from the power grid--whatever it is, using these things is part of the culture, like knowing how to repair wagon traces once was in Indiana. There is so much agreement that the psychic maps are easy to follow without particularly knowing anything at all.

Well, the day draws down with only half my writing target finished, but that is far far better than the none I have turned in so many times before, so I take it as progress. I hate turning in nones, even when they deserve it....

And Amos, see if you can do this with your iPhone.

Many times Amos has been abed with Edith Wharton.

I have returned. I have made arrangements to purchase one of these, -- Amos, it's a single shot target model formerly used by the US Olympic shooting team.

Now I must away, for I must be a work early enough to prepare for my monthly meeting with the Mayor.

Later I shall post more.

No, silly. This.   Only in a single-shot .22 long rifle (5.5mm) caliber. It's a much older gun, probably from the late '60s or early '70s. It's missing a screw in front of the trigger guard, but then I have a few screws loose and missing myself.

Why buy a single-shot target model? For the sport of it?

Yes, Amos. Strictly for target shooting -- say, 100 meters. It has precision front and rear sights, adjusting as little as .01 minute of angle at 100 meters.

Much like your kayak, but cheaper.

Lucky I didn't get them watched this weekend.

I have Last Chance Harvey waiting for me here (NetFlix). Did you like it? Thompson and Hoffman were good in Stranger Than Fiction, the little time they had together, so I was glad to see someone else noticed that. I bet MOM would like to watch it with you. Shall we ask her to pop some popcorn?

Thunderstorm this evening, MOM. Come in off of the porch again, please. You know that lightening hit the house and blasted one dormer a couple of years ago. The blue plastic tarp has finally weathered to kind of match the rest of the roof by now. One of these days one of the Boys will climb up there and finish the repairs and fix the roof.

'Twasn't lightning. Amos lit off one of those super-mega-firecrackers he has and threw it on the roof to see if it would damage the roof. It did.

The ATF came and said it was equivalent to a half a stick of 60% dynamite. They confiscated the rest of his firecrackers and fined him $10.00 US and told on him. Only he pointed to old Mrs. Schmeerkase and told the Agents that she was his mother (Mom being out at the time) and the Agents turned him over to her "wrath."

Now we all know that Mrs. Schmeerkase is deafer'n a post and not quite with us all the time anymore, so she just gave Amos some cookies and milk, told him to be a good boy (yeah, right!), and sent him home.

All better, MOM. Suspect food poisoning.

Well, gotta get ready and head to work. No coffee in the house will get one up and out quite early on a Wednesday morning.

last chance Harvey is quite good.

Don't know as I would trust any roof repairs made by the boys. Might end up with a bigger problem than the one they climbed up to fix.

Your act?

Well, you DID pioneer the use of pyrotechnics on stage, but I still don't think that drummer appreciated the detonators attached to his foot pedal. You know who I mean...whatsisname...Stumpy or Pegleg or something. That bit about setting your hair on fire DID impress me, but it took some kind of surgery to repair the damage done after your "ZZ Top beard" took fire too.

Even then the repairs didn't really take.

Oh!! I thought it was your Texas house.

In my mothers' house are many states, many hands. I am sure thatdormer can be put right in short order. We have to tear away the half-burned shigling, inspect the rafters, and scarf or wholly replace any that have been compromised. While we are int here we can add insulation. Then re-sheathe, and re-shingle. Bob's your uncle!! And Jedidiah's your mother's uncle!

Did all ya'll know that queen ants remove their own wings after mating?

Neither did I. Approached the car this evening to see a red winged ant on the door, grotesquely contorting. It had three wings attached, and one wing was clinging to the metal. I stood and watched as it twisted and struggled to get assorted legs up onto it's back to scrape off each remaining wing at the base. The ant calmed immediately when the last wing came off, briefly explored the last wing as it lay on the door, then sauntered toward the carhood.

I don't know if the wings hurt or itched like mad to get the lady to twist and turn so.

Google is a wonderful thing. I would never have gone to the library to research what I had just witnessed.

What a good observation, Janie. I remember spending whole coffee breaks studying the ants in their organized chaos scuttling along the trails behind the office. People thought I was slightly mad, but I never get tired of watching them and considering how they know what they know. Or at least, how they do what they do.
