If you clean it up before he gets home he'll never know.

He's at the old oaken pass, LH, probably taking an old oaken piss in the old oaken bucket, like the mustard sellers do in Paris.

Good points. I should be able to slip this one right by him.

Well while you're slipping out take a little detour over here. Mobius library. In Astana, Kazakhstan. Who knew?

Well...whatever. Should make the outside windows twice as costly to clean.

The creature you refer to as "Amos" has been tasted. His DNA is not to our liking, nor to the liking of any species known to us anywhere in the Universe or the multiverses we traverse. Please remove his DNA prior to any attempt by him to reproduce. The Universe and the multiverses are places of grace and wonder and DNA such as his do not belong in any of them.

Thank you.

The floors in that Mobius strip library aren't horizontal. How are the bookshelves supposed to stand up? For that matter, how are people supposed to comfortably read, study. or work there when the chairs they're sitting in are a few degrees away from vertical? How can anyone write when every time they put a pencil on a desk, it rolls off?

Hi MOM, just back at M & D's after flying up here to WV to attend my 40th year high school reunion.

It was actually fun, and a good turn-out, especially considering that it was pulled together kind of last minute. The 40th is the reunion where everyone has actually grown-up enough to not be self-conscious or nervous. A few old friends with whom I had lost complete touch when we all moved out-of-state, or were completely preoccupied with young children and marriages, both good and bad, have moved back, and I now have their phone numbers to call when I come up to visit the parents.

The womenfolk have, generally speaking, aged more gracefully than the menfolk.

It was held at the old high school, which is now a community center, but has not been changed or remodeled. I could pick out the section where my locker was, but not the locker. The bathrooms are just as battered and graffiti covered, and the Ben Franklin Store, where we would run in at lunch to buy stockings, sodas, and the latest top 40 forty-fives is long gone, as is the movie theater.

MOM, you will be pleased to know that my old choir director, Mrs. McGucken, is still alive, and living where she always did, a few houses down from the school.

We gathered in what was once the school cafeteria, and talked about how incredulous our own children and grandchildren are when we talk about the weekly school parties that happened there every Friday night, even in summer when school was out, or the lunchtime sock-hops in the gym. None of us are sure, including the kids, at what seems most incredulous - the simplicity of no DJ, no strobe, no live band except for the 2 semi-formal and 2 formal dances each year, just a kid who volunteered to keep putting 45's on the turntable, or the fact that they happened weekly, or the fact that they could happen weekly, with no trouble or fights, and virtually no drugs or alcohol.

On a table of memorabilia was a pamphlet I had completely forgotten about. "Ann Landers. (then her portrait photograph) Necking and Petting. What is Far Enough."

I thought about inviting you to come along, MOM.

Best for all concerned that I didn't.

And anyway, it's the thought that counts.

A different time, indeed.

Oh, poo. At my last high school reunion was a pamphlet entitled "Orgies: Correct Behavior in the Vomitorium" and another called "Avoiding the Arena: Apologizing To The Emperor". My old band director wasn't there, having failed to apologize correctly.

The only opportunity I had to attend a reunion I didn't; it was the 20th and I'd just given birth so had a lot of baby weight AND a baby that I'd have to take with me. I might have gotten an award for putting off having this child for so long, but I didn't feel up to it all. Maybe my folks will do a 40th in a few years?

I went to my National Guard unit's reunion last year -- got a DVD and a booklet out of it and had a lot of fun talking with the guys I served with. Turns out a lot of them are a lot better people now than they were then.

Well, I yam home--I had a great reunion with Mudl;ark and we sang until the wee hours of the morning Friday night and Saturday Barky came down from the Bay area on her beautiful Harley and we went over the hills to Morro bay and walked the beach and had a fine time; last night we sang until late with some nice friends of hers who are very good, and the htree of them have some really beautiful arrangements. BBW and her Mom, known as Gumma, were there and we all had a fine ole time, I can tell you! Then Barky rode off back to the Bay, and the next morning we put on our roller skates and rolled all the way back down the 5 to San Diego. There are some very nasty scorched hills just north of LA and some big columns of smoke still in play, but the through traffic was actually very smooth. My heart goes out to those who have lost cabins in the Angeles National Forest and whose homes are threatened.

Now we are safe at home and we have the parakeets back and they are very happy about that indeed.

He'd be better off setting a sprinkler on his roof and leaving it running. The biggest problem for a lot of houses catching fire, I've read, is the design of attic ventilation. Soffit vents or something, they're not a good idea in fire country.

Trees seem too close to the house to provide an adequate fire-defensive space. Can't tell what the roof material is; I hope it's metal.

Not wooden shake shingles--the flat synthetic ones that are laid and hammered down in runs and are made of somethinglike asphalt or tarpaper like substance. Much more fire resistant than shake roofing but less so than metal roofs.

MArs?

Perhaps you don't understand the market very well. The short distance (about 60 million kilometers) to Mars is offset by the fact that Mars has a perihelion of about 1.4 astronomical units during which period of passage it is ravaged by huge dust storms. I meant something a bit kinder and gentler than Southern California in summer. Price is no object. Please return to the drawing table and re-do your solicitation.

We have to go through our database of absolutely idyllic alien worlds and select an offer you simply cannot and will not refuse.

Google ads are trying to get a handle on MOAB. Usually there is nothing suggested. This morning I find:

    Folk and Festival Costumes

    Notably Norwegian

    Hellow Muddah, Hello Faddah

MasterPieces Sweet Shoppe 1000 piece puzzle

    The American Folk Blues Festival

A noble attempt.

Amos, forget this new planet stuff. Grab a bucket and try to keep the current one from burning down, please. It's a little hot in your neck of the woods and believe it or not, it affects our air quality. We can smell your smoke after a while.

We southerners don't believe you Californians have given adequate thought to the economic ramifications of your sockless lifestyles. Textile mills throughout the southeast have gone belly up because of the decline in sock sales caused by spreading Sandalism. In the interest of economic fairness, you Californians should buy your share of socks, whether you wear them or not. We buy your raisins, don't we?

I always wear socks with my sandals, because I am doing my bit to support poverty-stricken sock workers in textile mills throughout the Southeast.

But does Amos wear socks with his sandals? No! He doesn't care about starving sock workers in Slinkville, Alabama. He is heartless and self-absorbed, a typical Californian concerned only with making a big splash at patio parties and barbecues.

I had thought that when William Shatner moved to California it might have a salutary effect on the population, that they might follow his example and turn to a more mature and compassionate outlook. But no, they remained as crass as ever. It's disturbing. If I were Mr Shatner, I would go around lecturing them and give them sage advice toward mending their shallow ways and joining the rest of the human race.

It's just not done, my friends. It destroys the whole flow of the Sandal Thing. It especially interferes with Birkenstocks who are trying to do their form-fitting thing.

I always wear socks with my sandals when I'm here in Canada, Amos, and I have three very good reasons for doing so.

1. The soles of your feet don't stick to the sandals when you wear socks. It's therefore much more comfortable with socks.

2. You avoid getting sunburned feet by wearing socks.

3. Your feet stay warmer with socks on. This is not important when it's hot outside, but it can be of considerable help in cooler weather that is still feasible as "sandal weather"...that is, in early spring or autumn, for instance or on a cool night.

Now, when I'm in a place like Cuba or Trinidad...then I don't wear socks with my sandals much, because it's hot enough in those countries that it wouldn't really make sense to.

What gets me are those who wear shorts and sandal (sockless) when the temperature is hovering around 0 F (or even C) and there's a BUNCH of snow and ice on the ground. I've done something similar, going from a showerhouse to the hootch in my underwear and shower shoes when I was in Korea when the windchill was -24F, but a) it was only a few yards, b) it was not my normal daily attire in such weather, and c) I forgot the third reason.
