We knew that.

It took several hours, but I can now see the entire surface of my workbench. I can use my vice grip for more than just to hang a grocery store plastic bag to collect trash. In other words, I cleaned out my garage.

Not the entire thing, just the business end where all of my electric hand tools are. I'll work my way through the lumber and hay and potting stuff another day.

Access to tools such as these probably doesn't do much for interplanetary science, but it does a great deal for my ability to cut lumber.

How many do you have, Rapp? Seven hundred? I started a FB friendship with Peter Stampful of the Holy Modal Rounders and it has actually developed into mutual affinity of some sort, so I think of hium as a friend. On the other hand I also was friended by Jim KWeskin (who is playing at Fall River on the 16th instant) but have heard nothing more.

So it is a whole spectrum of realness. With you and me, senor, there is no question as to our friendship--no-one but a friend could stand the battering I have provided you over the years at Mom's place!! Oddly enough I think of all MOAB ites as good friends, even though most of them have never dined with me.

I have dined with both Amos and Rapparree, though not at the same time. And wonderful times those were. Here's to more to come!

I have a fair number of friends on Facebook. Maybe 50 or thereabouts. While some of them are genuine friends, and others more just acquaintances, I spend virtually no time at all on Facebook. I feel that if I did, I would merely lose another big chunk of my life to virtual reality, and I would gain absolutely nothing worthwhile in the process. Facebook is like beer. I know it exists, I know it's ubiquitous in fact, but I almost never think about it (except, in the case of beer, when I'm composing stories about Shane).

The nefarious ghost writer has revealed himself at last! As if we didn't know already.

The previous message was written by a ghost writer. As was this one.

Ever notice how a workbench doesn't seem real until it has a vice grip mounted on it? I bought this old but still in great shape (I had to clean it up but it works fine now) for $10 at a garage sale. I didn't want a new one, I wanted my work bench to look as old as the ones that my Dad had in the basement at our various houses.

Another ghost, of sorts. :)

I once had a car that had a pair of vice grips instead of a door opener on the driver's side. They are certainly multipurpose tools.

I'm not using the right term then. One of these things. Bolted down to the bench. It'd be a damned hard tool to use to open any kind of door! (Unless you threw it through the window glass).

Ah, ladies...I think (since you are both still in the US, I assume) you probably want to use the American spelling, "vise" and not the British "vice."

The latter would, in this country assume that Stilly has vice on her workbench and Eiseley has a good grip in the same thing. There would be, for example, a bit of a difference between a "Vice Squad" and a "Vise Squad." Granted, the latter may be used to put the squeeze on the former, but only in days past or in Chicago.

Canucks use Brit spellings because they are not yet Enlightened.

That's a bench vise, Still. GOtta have one if it is to be a real workbench. Use mine alla time. Vice-grips are like locking pliers with various-shaped noses; a good set of them will serve you in all kinds of tricky situations, like screwing or unscrewing a screw whose slot has been stripped, for example.

Damned spelling rules. In the FWIW department, I Googled it as "table vice" and got a bunch of photos like that.

Yeah, these are what I meant. With the "s" of course.

What do Brits call a pair of pliers that dropped on a hot street?

Eiseley

Your poor work habits are clearly reflected in ur recent post. I always start a job with a clean workbench. I put out the tool or tools I will be using. In this case, the vice.

Add vise and consent is what Amos is interested in. As are most of us, at our work benches. No loose screws, nuts, or bolts, or sticky substances to worry about.

Because they're so big and heavy, Amos. I've seen some that had to be carried on a truck. They're like anvils. In fact, some of them have little anvils attached. Personally, I like anvils. I used to know a girl named Ann Vills. She wore her hair in pigtails and had freckles and could run faster than her brothers. Then one day the family moved away and I've never seen her again. Which was okay, because every time she saw me she'd beat me up and laugh at me. I was told that was just her way of showing she liked me, but I dunno -- being hit on the head with a piece of galvanized pipe just doesn't do much for me.

It obviously made you mentally agile, if haphazard. Being hit on the head is a subjective exposure to the endemic overlay of irrationality superimposed on complexity, a wicked combination sure to defeat the sturdiest of souls.
