We're hoping that the Official Fringe will equal the success of the People's Voice. Maggie and I will be welcoming contributions at the 'Iced Gems at Teatime' sessions on Saturday and Sunday at Hodgsons. A change to do something a bit different.

well churlish it may be but the Bearded one & I won't be there... sorry folks but we're off to Tiree... in the Inner Hebrides!!! I'm sure you'll all manage without us (although Stewarts absence will mean the bar takings will be down)

I hope it goes well and the partnership works... it will be hard to beat last year!!!

If I knew a way of doing it on Mudcat, I'd attach a copy of the fringe programme. Suffice it to say that most of what we did last year in the PVFF survives into the fringe - the main casualty has been the music in the Mariners which has changed hands since last year. All of the others - Sun, Foresters, Oddfellows, Hodgsons, Beehive,Tiger, Nellies, Moulders are putting as much or more than they did in 2002.

Assuming that the licensees come up with enough advertising, the festival programme (which includes the fringe) will be free - it cost £2 in 2001. I'm convinced that the free PVFF programme (designed by Les) last year got a lot of locals involved and I'm keen to repeat that for now and the future.

Roger

Too true Roger! If the locals get a programme and go to a pub and hear some music and buy some beer and please the landlord who can afford to put some money in to provide a free programme...

And hopefully there will more people about to watch dance displays and such and put money in tins. All this means support from businesses and people who live in the area who elect the people who contribute money and facilities to the festival.

From: Sir Roger de Beverley

Everything that Les says about the free programmes is true and I have fought hard to get them this year. However, I have just been given some bad news:

Chris Wade, the festival director, has informed me that, despite the best efforts of the publicity man Ray Grange, only one pub (the Sun) is prepared to take advertising space in the festival programme. That effectively scuppers any plans for a free programme although Chris says that they will be cheaper than in previous years - possibly £1.

I have written an intro to the fringe to go in the programme and have mentioned all of the venues involved. I have also produced a one page table of fringe events which I will distribute to the pubs so that they can copy them and hand out to customers if they wish. This is not what we had hoped for but we can't expect the festival organisers to produce thousands of extra copies for nowt and, unlike last year, we don't have any money for printing.

Roger

She was asking for £50 per ad, Rog. Personally, I did't think that extortionate, but the smaller pubs don't wanna pay that much.

Incidentally, if anyone spots a really drunk bloke who looks exactly like me wandering about the Festival clutching a guitar and singing lewdly at anyone who'll listen, it's not me. I'm not going this year, but my twin brother is apparently going to attend. Just wanted to clear that up in advance.

The Ducks will be there and many thanks to those who have made it possible to do the fringe without weekend tickets. With children as young as ours it can be annoying when we can't make full use of a season ticket but can't stay on a festival site without. By all means rattle a tin in our direction the kids love putting money in!

Don't forget that camping spaces are limited and that you need to book your spot through the festival office. I'm told by the organisers that they haven't had many fringe bookings for camping yet.

I was hoping to get a local folk club to run the festival fringe folk club on Saturday afternoon (as we did last year) but haven't had any luck yet. So, we will probably try and run it in shifts.

I would appreciate it if any volunteers who would like to take an hour or so at the helm could get in touch.

Roger

We'd better explain the 'Iced Gems at teatime' reference to those who haven't come across it before. Often at festivals we find that some people want to use the time between 6pm and 8pm(ish) to eat, but we are made of sterner (or dafter!) stuff. We like to use this time to have a nice little choice session, and, if possible, to give people an opportunity to sing or play (or recite or dance) something a bit different - something they may not want to attempt in a singaround, or something they might not get the chance to do in musicians session. Not to say that it has to be different, that's entirely up to you.

Les and Maggie

The plan is that I and my mate Gifford from the West Riding will kick it off at 2pm and run things for an hour or so and then pass it on the next in line, and so on.

Do any of you want to bid for a particular slot? How long it runs depends how many punters we get but last year the room was full all afternoon until they pulled the plug around 6pm.

I forgot to say that the shanty thing is on Saturday from 1pm and I also forgot to plug the folk club that we are running upstairs in hodgson's - also Saturday but from 2pm.

So, in theory you could walk the length of Eastgate from 12 noon and sing one or more songs in Oddies, Sun, Hodgsons and Foresters (not necessarily in that order)all in the same afternoon.

Perhaps we can have the alternative workshops, like can someone bring a load of Fisher Price tools and we can have a very safe making things workshop. A Seven Dwarves workshop.... a making things Blue Peter style. All sitting alongside the Jim & Ken Bookies Workshop.. the Falling Over Guy Ropes Workshop (led by Noreen)... The Fabulous Bendy Balloon Rapper Team Workshop and others....

As explained at the bar of the Sun, Raggy (well there were other distractions!)...

Post the URL of your website, or wherever you've uploaded your pics, to Pene Azul: jeff@mudcat.org and tell him which you want putting on Mudcat, and what you want them labelling etc. He will do the rest, superhero that he is (thanks Jeff!)

Then they will appear in Member Photos & Info, reached from the drop-down menu at the top of the page.

When the pics are there, you (or I, or anyone else who's taken the next step in remedial HTML, or anyone who can use the blickifier under the message box) can put a blue clickie in this thread to take people straight there.

If you like, in the meantime, you can post the URL of your Kodak site in this thread so we can get there directly- depends if there's anything else there that you don't want available to the general public.

OK?

After seeing all the people with badges and medallions saying things like "artist" and such. I'm going to get a big hat with a feather in it and the words "Director of the Fringe" spelled out in sequins.

Seriously, though, any feedback good and bad about the various fringe events and venues would be helpful. If you are still suffering from alcohol amnesia, the venues that we used were:

Oddies, Sun, Hodgson's, Tiger, Nellies, Forester's, Moulder's and Beehive.

Just an idea, Beverley must be steeped in history, I spent about an hour in St Marys church on Saturday, glorious place, any chance of a guided walk with someone giving a spiel about the place?

Try Yahoo photos, Mrs Duck. You have to sign up with them first but it's free, and I've always found it very easy to use. You get 30MB storage, which I've just noticed I've nearly used up.

Once you have signed in, you select Add Photos (NO!) and tell it where on your computer you have stored your photos. You can upload a batch at a time, but I'd keep it to 3 or so at a time if you've not got broadband.

Then once you have uploaded to Yahoo, you can send the URL to Pene Azul, as in my post above to Raggy.

Want to see these photies!

Noreen, just, Hazel KY & Colin, Ossenflags, MC Fat Red & White Rabbit and THAT guitar all feature and if people want to see them I took a load in St Marys Church, some of Beverley itself and some of the Minster.

Their debut album is still in my collection and on my iPod. I found the music to be intriguing and I still listen to it for ideas/inspiration. Some of their lyrics seem a bit strange (reminiscent of the times), but overall they still intrigue me.

All the best,

Mick

Looks like I'm going to be there this year with Bigbird but without the camper. It's part way through a big re-build but it won't be ready for the trip north.

This year it'll be chiefly - a tent.

Looking forward to a great weekend.

Remember it all like it was yesterday, Mick. Somebody recently started a fortnightly folk session that I attended. Mnnyyaaaa - Mrs McGrath was indeed belted out, along with the auld Punch Ladle. Brilliant to do some of that again. Gonna wheel out some Nic Jones and Martyn Simpson this friday, that'll give em something to think about! Heh heh. Folk is alive and well in St. Helier, I'm pleased to report. There were fiddle players, banjos, whistles, flutes, and guitars. Just need a good box player now and it'll be just like Nellies used to be. Wehey!

Have a great weekend everybody, hope the weather is ok for you!
